Quelques réflexions sur Guerre turco-balkanique [ Edition originale ]
1 brochure in-8, Imprimerie A.-G.

Protocole No CXLIX. Seance du 17 October 1862.
Very Good French Paperback. Folio. (34 x 22 cm). In French. 6 p. First edition of the session of October 17, 1862, of this official printed 139th protocol in French of the agreement in which the Danube Commission was accepted to be established which was authorized by the Treaty of Paris (1856) after the close of the Crimean War, between the Ottoman Empire, the United Kingdom, and France, which won the Crimean War with Russia. The European Commission of the Danube, or, in French, Commission Européenne du Danube, the CED is one of the Commissions of the Danube River authorized by the Treaty of Paris (1856) after the close of the Crimean War. The CED had authority over the three mouths of the river - the Chilia in the north, the Sulina in the middle, and St. George in the south which was originally designed to last for only two years. Instead, it lasted eighty-two years. A separate commission, the International Danube Commission, or IDC, was authorized to control commerce and improvements upriver beyond the Danube Delta and was supposed to be permanent, but it was not formally organized until after 1918. Tarihçi Christoph K. Neumann'in hedefi, eserin, içinde yazildigi zamana getirdigi elestirel yaklasim göz önünde bulundurularak okunmasidir. Çalisma, üç ana konuyu ele aliyor: Ahmed Cevdet, genel olarak Osmanli tarihyaziciligi ve 19. yüzyil Ottoman history. Eserin kendi zamaninin siyasi düsüncesindeki önemi ise ön plandadir. Cevdet'in Ottoman history anlatisinin temelinde hangi önermeler, beklentiler ve bakis açilari vardi? Yazar hangi amaçlarla yaziyor ve nelere karsi tavir aliyordu? Getirdigi gerekçelerle 19. yüzyilin ikinci yarisindaki Ottoman history arasinda hangi baglantilar kurulabilir? Yazar gibi biz de bu kitabin Tarih-i Cevdet'i, tasvir ettigi çag için daha iyi kullanilabilir bir kaynak haline getirecegini umuyoruz.

Amorium: A brief guide to a late Roman and Byzantine city in Central Anatolia.= Orta Anadolu'da bulunan bir geç Roma ve Bizans kenti Amorium. Amorium was a city in Phrygia, Asia Minor which was founded in the Hellenistic period, flourished under the Byzantine Empire, and declined after the Arab sack of 838. It was situated on the Byzantine military road from Constantinople to Cilicia. Its ruins and höyük ('mound, tumulus') are located under and around the modern village of Hisarköy, 13 kilometers east of the district center, Emirdag, Afyonkarahisar Province, Turkey. Amorium is the Latinized version of its original Greek name Amorion. Arab / Islamic sources refer to the city as Ammuriye. Under Ottoman rule the site, which never regained importance, was called Hergen Kale.

CHRISTIAN MAREK, MUSTAFA ADAK.
Epigraphische Forschungen in Bithynien, Paphlagonien, Galatien und Pontos (Philia Suppl. 2).
New New German Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (30 x 22 cm). In German. 142 p., ills. Eindeutig 1 L. Robert, A Travers L'Asie Mineure.

Christie Agatha Mallowan
Come, Tell Me How You Live
8vo, (Archaeologists in Syria). An engaging record of an archaeological expedition to the Near East before the war (WWII). "This book is an answer. It is the answer to a question that is asked me very often. So you dig in Syria, do you? Do tell me all about it. How do you live? In a tent? etc, etc," adding a little later: "This is not a profound book It is, in fact, small beer a very little book, full of everyday doings and happenings." Its opening pages see her describing her travails attempting to find a suitable outfit for her travels: "Of course, Modom, we are not being asked for that kind of thing just now! We have some very charming little suits here - OS [outsize] in the darker colours. Oh, loathsome OS! How humiliating to be OS! How even more humiliating to be recognised at once as OS!" writes Christie, cheerily. More than 70 years ago, Christie recorded her arrival at Palmyra, her usually light tone giving way to one of genuine emotion. "After seven hours of heat and monotony and a lonely world Palmyra! That, I think, is the charm of Palmyra its slender creamy beauty rising up fantastically in the middle of hot sand," she writes. "It is lovely and fantastic and unbelievable, with all the theatrical implausibility of a dream. Courts and temples and ruined columns I have never been able to decide what I really think of Palmyra. It has always for me the dreamlike quality of that first vision. My aching head and eyes made it more than ever seem a feverish delusion! It isnt - it cant be real." Going to the "holy shrine of Sheikh Adi situated in the Kurdish hills near Mosul", described last year as "hell on earth" in a Guardian piece, she writes that "there can be, I think, no spot in the world so beautiful or so peaceful". "You wind up far into the hills through oak trees and pomegranates, following a mountain stream. The air is fresh and clear and pure," records the novelist. "And then, suddenly, you come to the white spires of the shrine. All is calm and gentle and peaceful there. There are trees, a courtyard, running water. Gentle-faced custodians bring you refreshments and you sit in perfect peace, sipping tea." (The Guardian)

CHRISTINE BRUNS-ÖZGAN.
Knidos. A guide to the ancient site.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (21 x 12 cm). In English. 72 p., ills. Knidos. A guide to the ancient site. Knidos is a hidden treasure, situated on the far southwest coast of Turkey ¿ an ancient city in a setting of great natural beauty, remote, and yet redolent with history. Its rocky landscape dotted with patches of unspoilt wild vegetation combines with a pleasantly mild climate to give added attraction to the charm of this archaeological site, where winds provide a cool breeze even in hottest summer months. Because of its location at the end of a long peninsula, Knidos is hard to reach by road, and most visitors prefer to arrive by sea. However, those who choose to use the difficult overland route are rewarded with a journey through an attractive but changing landscape of pine forests, red and black rocky outcrops formed from cooled lava, and almond and olive groves, a main source of income for the local people. The last stage of the road passes through the ancient cemetery or necropolis area. Finally, one reaches the spot from where there is a uniquely beautiful view, and one looks out across theterraced slopes and harbours of Knidos. Although excavations have been carried out at the site for many years, Knidos, because of its remote and isolated location, has remained unspoilt and has not been overwhelmed by a large volume of tourist traffic. This book is intended to provide visitors with a brief history of this important ancient city and an easy guide to the site as it is today. The surviving ruined buildings and monuments are described in a set order, as listed in the contents, so that visitors are given the best route to follow. Those buildings that are most visible and whose excavation has been completed are listed first and in greater detail, while others, such as the Large Theatre, which are difficult to reach, or areas that are still being excavated or studied, like the Sanctuary of the Muses and the Necropolis, are described more briefly.

Living in the Ottoman Realm: Empire and Identity, 13th to 20th Centuries
8vo, br. ed. 367pp. Living in the Ottoman Realm brings the Ottoman Empire to life in all of its ethnic, religious, linguistic, and geographic diversity. The contributors explore the development and transformation of identity over the long span of the empire's existence. They offer engaging accounts of individuals, groups, and communities by drawing on a rich array of primary sources, some available in English translation for the first time. These materials are examined with new methodological approaches to gain a deeper understanding of what it meant to be Ottoman. Designed for use as a course text, each chapter includes study questions and suggestions for further reading. Christine Isom-Verhaaren is Assistant Professor of History at Brigham Young University. She is author of Allies with the Infidel: The Ottoman and French Alliance in the Sixteenth Century. Kent F. Schull is Associate Professor of Ottoman and Modern Middle East History at Binghamton University, SUNY and author of Prisons in the Late Ottoman Empire: Microcosms of Modernity.

CHRISTOPHER LIGHTFOOD.
Amorium: A Byzantine city in Anatolia. An archaeological guide.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 180 p. Color and b/w ills. "In 1836 William Hamilton identified the site of Amorium and provided the first description of the ancient ruins. "We reached the deserted and dreary site of what was once a populous city.Near the centre of the valley in which the ruins are situated. is an insulated hill about half a mile in circumference, on which may still be traced a portion of the walls of an Acropolis. The principal part of the town is to the S. and S.W. of the Acropolis. These ruins.appear chiefly to date from the early Byzantine or Christian period., marking the existence of one of those large and important towns which were destroyed in this part of Asia Minor by the irruptions of the Saracens and the Seljukian monarchs of Iconium." Much of what Hamilton described has now disappeared, but since 1988 the Amorium Excavations Project has been able to reveal other ruins that testify to the accuracy of his assessment of Amorium as an important Roman and Byzantine city. This guidebook aims to give an interim account of the on-going excavations and set the site in its proper historical context.".

CIHAN ÖZGÜN, MUSTAFA KAYMAKÇI.
Rhodes and Kos Turks: Contributions to the Turkish War of Independence and current problems.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 112 p. Turks living in Rhodes and Kos (Istanköy) today have been one of the ancient peoples of the islands since 1522. Finally, the Islands were ceded to Greece with the 1947 Conference of Paris by stipulating in Article l4 that "these islands shall be and remain demilitarized". With the ceding of the islands to Greece, the dramatic condition of the Rhodes and Kos(Istanköy)Turks became increasingly more intolerable. However, the link between the Turks of the island and Turkey, in terms of Awareness of Turkishness and Solidarity as well as socio-economic terms with Turkey, was also a prevalent issue in the past as it is today. In fact, Rhodes and Kos (Istanköy) Turks did not hesitate to extend their support to the National Campaign (Milli Müdafaa), both directly and indirectly, while the Turks fought against the Greek forces under the command of Mustafa Kemal Pasha in Anatolia. They tried to provide contribution to the campaign with the "Rhodes and Kos (Istanköy)Association for the Defense of Islamic Rights" (Rodos ve Istanköy Müdafaa-i Hukuk-i Islamiye Cemiyeti) in 1919. Likewise, the book entitled "Rhodes and Kos: Contributions to the Turkish War of Independence and Current Problems" mainly aims to reveal the contributions of the island Turks to the Turkish War of Independence. This book consists of three consecutive sections. The first section covers the "Contributions of Rhodes and Kos (Istanköy) Turks to the Turkish War of Independence". In the second section, on the other hand, the subject of "The Current Problems of the Rhodes and Kos Turks Stemming from the Turkish-Greek Relations as Regards the Aegean Sea" was addressed. In the third section, the subject of "Recommendations for Transforming Turkish-Greek Relations into a Lasting Friendship" was addressed on a general level and in terms of Rhodes and Kos (Istanköy)Turkishness. Thus, we wished to bring the current problems experienced by the Turks regarding the Turkish-Greek relations into the agenda of the national and international public by establishing a connection with the history of the remaining Turks in the islands.

CIHAN ÖZGÜN, MUSTAFA KAYMAKÇI.
The recent history of the Rhodes and Kos Turks: The silent cry rising in the Aegean Sea.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 171 p., ills. The recent history of the Rhodes and Kos Turks. The silent cry rising in the Aegean Sea. There is a Turkish population of about 6,000 people who live in the Dodecanese Islands, mainly Rhodes and Kos. Current problems of Moslem Turks living in the Dodecanese include expressing their Turkish identity freely, having a voice in the administration of the foundations, reativating the functions of the Muftiate, restarting turkish language and religion courses in schools, reopening mosques to religious services and restoring the civil rights and citizenshipstatus of the Dodecanese Turks who had been previously deprived of Greek citizenship. This book aims to investigate through a historical perspective the past and present social and economic status of the island Turks living in Rhodes, Kos and Turkey as well as recording and preserving legends, folk dances, elegies and life stories that are not recorded by documented historiography. The book will also provide the means for communicating the problems of Rhodes and Kos turks in recent history and at persent to the turkish and international public opinion, but especially to the Greek public opinion. In this respect, it also includes some suggestions for the establishment of a long-lasting friendship in Turkish-Greek relations.
