Witnesses to a bygone culture ancient wall paintings provide direct access to the ancient way of life, and become a means of communication between their commissioner and their audience. In Ephesos for a long time wall painting was treated as a second-class citizen, as a secondary product of the excavated monuments. The remains of wall paintings at Ephesos, however, extend far beyond Terrace Houses which can be easily visited today. With this book the remnants of wall paintings in Ephesos are for the first time studied and presented in detail, claiming a new chronology and dating. From the Terrace Houses to the Grotto of St. Paul the work covers a long time span from the Hellenistic period through medieval Byzantine period, enriched with numerous colour figures.

The BEO 350 protocol register edited here is part of the Sublime Porte Archives series of the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives in Istanbul. The register covers a number of ceremonies held on various occasions from 1736 to 1808 and primarily concerned with accession ceremonies, funerals and, most of all, the reception of envoys. This edition of the BEO 350 is accompanied by an introduction, a synoptic list of ceremonies, appendices, and indexes. The introduction examines various aspects of Ottoman ceremonies, particularly those of a diplomatic nature, and includes a section on the gifts and offerings exchanged by the Ottoman administration and foreign envoys. As briefly discussed in the introduction, ceremonies contribute, albeit modestly, to the validation of a regime's political legitimacy and to its smooth functioning. Jh. v. Chr. in der Nähe der alten persischen Residenzsstadt Kelainai (heute Dinar, Provinz Afyon) errichtete Tumulusgrab von Tatarli ist fur das Kulturerbe der Turkei von unschätzbarem Wert, da seine holzerne Grabkammer vollflächig mit qualitätvollen persisch beeinflussten Holzmalereien uberzogen war - eine heute fast gänzlich verlorene Kunstgattung. Das Grab wurde 1969 geplundert, die besterhaltenen Balken herausgesägt und ins Ausland geschafft. Die restlichen Holzbalken wurden ins Archäologische Museum von Afyon gebracht. Vor sechs Jahren wurden vier fehlende Balkenteile in einem Museum in Munchen (Deutschland) wiederentdeckt. Einmal der Nachweis der Zugehorigkeit dieser Stucke mit dem Tatarli-Grab erbracht, starteten Latife Summerer und Alexander von Kienlin, in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ministerium fur Kultur und Tourismus der Republik Turkei, ein Projekt diese vor vierzig Jahren zerstorte Grabkammer so vollständig wie moglich wiederaufzubauen, und auf diese Weise sie fur kunftige Generationen zu bewahren. Mit der Restaurierung der großten aus der Antike erhaltenen Holzmalereien und der Ruckfuhrung aller bereits außer Landes gelangten Teile der Grabkammer ist dieses Projekt nicht nur fur die Wissenschaft ein unschätzbarer Gewinn, sondern leistet auch einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Bewahrung der turkischen Kulturschätze. Mit Forderung der Agentur Istanbul 2010 Kulturhauptstadt Europas und des Auswärtigen Amtes der Bundesrepublik Deutschland wird diese einzigartige bemalte Holzgrabkammer mit ihren farbenfrohen Bildern von Krieg, Kult und Mythos restauriert und zum ersten Mal im Museum Vedat Nedim Tor des Kulturzentrums der Yapi Kredi zwischen dem 17.
