‎Elaiussa Sebaste III: L'Agora Romana.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. In Italian. Color ills. 420 p., and many folding plts. ‎Elaiussa Sebaste: A port city between east and west. An archaeological guide.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 176 p. Color and b/w ills. "The ancient city of Elaiussa Sebaste (today Ayas) lies on the south-eastern coast of Turkey. The birth and the development of the settlement were granted by the favourable geographical position of the city, situated along the important coastal road connecting Asia Minor to Syria and projected in the intense commercial traffic of the eastern Mediterranean and, secondly, to the abundant natural resources of the hinterland - timber from the Tauro forests, vineyards and olive trees (elaion) to which the name Elaiussa itself alludes. The site was, during the Roman age, one of the most important cities of the Roman province of Cilicia, which developed considerably in the 2nd and 3rd century AD; it maintained its prestigious role as significant trading port until the Late Empire and the first Byzantine age. Thanks to its long and continuous life, Elaiussa can be indeed qualified as a remarkable case study for the deepening of historical and archaeological knowledge on the dynamics of the development and evolution of urban centres in the Eastern Mediterranean area. Prof. Dr. Eugenia Equini Schneider (Università di Roma "Sapienza", Italy) has been the head of the excavation team in Elaiussa Sebaste since 1995".‎

‎A summary catalogue of the Turkish makams. With a CD.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 164 p. For over three decades I had the opportunity to research on Ottoman musical writings in the Turkish libraries and to consult private collections. Concurrently, I was able to study Ottoman musical manuscripts kept in libraries outside Turkey. Along those years of research I carried out persistent investigations that gave me access to a large number of Ottoman materials ranging from the fifteenth century to the end of the nineteenth century. As a result of examining numerous musical manuscripts in Ottoman Turkish literature I discerned the commonplace of themes in the majority of writings and evaluated their structure at formal and generative level. Moreover, I was able to ascertain the significant purport of certain sources over others and to compare several versions of the texts. The idea of this catalogue evolved gradually in my mind from the perception that an explicit presentation of the makams would constitute a valuable reference both for evaluating the historical process of creating and performing music, as well as for establishing the inventory of modal categories and their taxonomic relations. As time passed, I was able to determine the development of a genuine Turkish concept in works that provided descriptive and analytical matter, and to detect through manuscript lines the significance of the process involving the semantics of the practice of music at different periods. The present book is mainly focused upon the practical theory of the makams reflected in the production and performance of the melodic scales the way they are described in Ottoman manuscripts.‎

‎Beyond the glory of the Sultans: Cantemir's view of the Turks.‎

‎New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 200 p., b/w and color ills. "Prince Dimitrie Cantemir (1673-1723) combined a multitude of talents in a complex personality of spiritual enlightenment and intellectual curiosity. His works form a reservoir of facts and histories that reveal surprising angles to many philosophical and cultural questions through a maze of revolving evasions in search for the deep meaning. Cantemir never ceased to amaze European and Turkish intellectuals with the wealth of his analyses and observations across interrelated areas of knowledge. The humanistic curiosity of Cantemir has no limits as he continues to move around the multifaceted points of his attention in search of the ultimate perspective to his subjects. The Turks, their actions and customs aggressive and kindly, genuine and symbolic, ordinary and majestic, stand in overwhelming light on the center stage of Cantemir's world of configurations.".‎

‎Prens Dimitri Cantemir: Türk musikisi bestekâri ve nazariyatçisi. [= Prince Dimitrie Cantemir: Theorist and composer of Turkish music]. Translated by Selçuk Alimdar.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). In Turkish. 216 p., b/w ills. Turkish Edition of Popescu-Judetz's 'Prince Dimitrie Cantemir: Theorist and composer of Turkish music'. The present book is not limited to the study of Cantemir's treatise on Ottoman music. It first gives us the complete story of his eventful and dramatic life including his Russian stage and an account of his multifarious activities. In the same chapter the writer goes through not only his history of the Ottoman empire but other Cantemir books and other Romanian sources about the Prince and familiarises us with the content of these works. Her quotations from and references to various non-standard sources make this part of the book more useful and appealing. I believe this introduction will become a standard source for anybody who is to consider Cantemir's life, his story and other works.‎

‎Three comparative essays on Turkish music.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 180 p. This book scrutinizes three different theoretical aspects of Ottoman sources. The first essay discusses the principles of makam classification proposed by diverse Ottoman writers and compares their ideas within socio-cultural setting. The resulting analogies and polarities are outlined in order to emphasize the essential ideas in the perspective of musical creativity. The second essay explores Dimitrie Cantemir's compositions and establishes the authenticity of the pieces that have circulated in the general repertory of Turkish classical music under his signature. The provenance of the compositions evidences the way written and oral sources crossed borders and combined as to further generate new materials out of a commixture of original and derivative elements. In essence, oral tradition has interacted and interfered in forming Cantemirian repertory adding versions and variants that were transmitted independently and were accepted as authoritative creations by the community of musicians and the public of music lovers. The third essay evokes the personality of Hasan Talat Bey of Bebek, a remarkable patron of musicians and collector of music, who sponsored weekly musical gatherings in his mansion. There gathered frequently the music makers, creators and performers of songs and instrumental pieces. The happening of music gatherings was memorialized in the tablets with written music and decorative embellishments the host used to offer the guests as souvenirs. In addition, the discussion includes the survey of the song collection owned by Hasan Talat with title entries.‎

‎La decouverte de la Cappadoce au dix-neuvieme siecle. Traduit du Grec par Bruno Dulibine.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 145, [6] p., ills.

‎Inventory of Ottoman Turkish documents about waqf preserved in the Oriental Department at the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library. Pt. 1: Registers.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 350, [1] p. Inventory of Ottoman Turkish documents about waqf preserved in the Oriental Department at the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library. Pt. 1: Registers. This inventory was compiled owing to the joint efforts of three senior researchers Evgeni Radushev, Svetlana Ivanova, and Rumen Kovachev. They carried our the study for the present inventory by focusing on the registers and series of waqf documents compiled in the form of destes or quires of documents and two specialized kad¿ waqf sicills. The single documents, which Prof. L. Fekete calls ¿loose sheets¿ will be included in a second volume of the Inventory. A detailed annotation is given for each archival unit that is listed. The data contained in the registers informs us especially about the location of the land waqfs in the Balkans and Anatolia, their founders, the types of waqf properties, toponyms and onomastics, the salaries of waqf functionaries, market prices and the enterprises of various waqfs, depicting a detailed picture of the Ottoman Empire and providing information about problems which have not been formerly dealt with. This inventory includes 472 documents only from the funds of the Oriental Department at the National Library in Sofia. They are written primarily in Ottoman, while several archival units are in Arabic. Chronologically they range between the 15th and the 20th centuries. The documents are arranged in a chronological order. This volume contains an index of the personal names of the founders, trustees of waqfs as well as some of the officers. The biographical information is significant for local history as well as the ¿inner¿ history of the empire. This index also contains short lives of military commanders, religious functionaries, sultans¿ wives, eunuchs, etc. The index of geographic places identifies Ottoman and modern names of villages and mahalles. Then come the subject matter index and the glossary of terms. The glossary includes useful information for all researchers of Ottoman history. The present inventory sheds light upon one of the significant subjects of Ottoman social and economic history on the basis of first hand archival documents.‎

‎EVLIYA ÇELEBI [MEHMED ZILLÎ B. DERVIS], (1611-1685).‎

‎[EVLIYA IN EGYPT, SUDAN AND ETHIOPIA] Evliya Çelebi seyahatnamesi. Vol. 10: Misir, Sudan, Habes, (1672-1680).‎

‎Very Good Turkish Original grey cloth bdg. Roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In Turkish. [xxviii], [4], [4], 1112 p., 2 full-page color maps. First map is the most famous one showing the Nile and the second one shows the Mediterranean shores and cities of Egypt. Rare first edition of the 10th, and the last volume of the Evliya's travel corpus including his descriptions of Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia in the late 17th century. This legendary travel account was published between 1896-1938 respectively in ten volumes. "Book X lands him in Egypt and takes him up the Nile to the Sudan and Ethiopia. When Evliya reaches Ibrim on the Nile, the southernmost limit of the Ottoman Empire, he remarks on the intense heat of the place; contrasting it with the intense cold he experienced at the northernmost limit, Azov; and with the mild climates at the eastern and western frontiers, Baghdad on the one hand, and Istolnibelgrad on the other. Apparently, Egypt suited him best, and he found Cairo a worthy counterpart to Istanbul; for he settled there to work up his memoirs of forty-one years of travel. He died around 1683, and there is controversy over whether a certain cryptic passage refers to the Ottoman defeat at Vienna.". (Evliya Çelebi's book of travels. 2. Evliya Çelebi in Bitlis). Evliya Çelebi visited Suakin during one of his journeys across Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti and Tanzania. He describes this territory under the title "The characteristics of old throne center Suakin" as "we stayed in this city for 12 days, trading with all kinds of people with camel trains. I sold 40 dromedaries in return for 500 piasters and also disburdened, sold 50 tusks for 500 piasters. Then we started to wander around the city. The Suez Sea is to the north of the island, and it takes 12 hours to reach Mecca from the island. Therefore, the direction of Mecca from this city is to the north. Suakin is a little island stretching three miles from east to west. (Afyoncu, Daily Sabah). Further travels in the 1670s took him to western and southwestern Anatolia and Syria. He completed the Hajj again and appears to have settled in Egypt for several years. He traveled in Upper Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia searching for the sources of the River Nile, before settling down to compile his great travel book. OCLC 630428224 (with four copies).‎
