Imber Colin
The Ottoman Empire, 1300-1650: The Structure of Power
small octavo paperback xiv + 405pp., maps, bibliog.,and Index, with a section of 5 b/w maps. Fine history of the Ottoman rise from 14th Century obscurity to a world power in 200 years. The Ottoman Empire, 1300~1650 surveys the history of the Ottoman Empire from its obscure origins in the fourteenth century, through its rise to world~power status in the sixteenth century, to the troubled times of the seventeenth century. Going beyond a simple narrative of Ottoman achievements and key events, Colin Imber uses original sources and research, as well as the rapidly expanding body of modern scholarship on the subject, to show how this complex state worked in practice. Imber focuses on the fascinating internal structure and politics of the Ottoman Empire, analysing the various institutions through which the Ottoman Sultan projected his power: the dynasty, and the means of recruitment to dynastic service; the palace, court and central government; provincial government; the law; the army and the fleet. Imber charts the growth and development of these Institutlons over three~and~a~half centuries, until a period of crisis in the 16005 curbed the Empire's expansion and caused significant structural changes. Fresh and dynamic, The Ottoman Empire, 1300~1650 presents an unprejudiced view of one of the most important but, at the same time, most misunderstood empires of the pre~modern age. It is essential reading for all those with an interest not only in the Ottomans but also in the late medieval and early modern history of Western Europe, the Balkans and the Middle East. S

8vo. 9 1/4 x 6 1/4. xxxi,1026 p/pages incl index.21 maps and many figures and tables.A richly detailed social and economic history from around 1300 to the out break of world war 1.An essential book for understanding the contemporary development in both the Middle -east and the post-soviet balkan period. This major contribution to Ottoman history is now published in paperback in two volumes: the original single hardback volume (1994) has been widely acclaimed as a landmark in the study of one of the most enduring and influential empires of modern times. The authors provide a richly detailed account of the social and economic history of the Ottoman region, from the origins of the Empire around 1300 to the eve of its destruction during World War One. The breadth of range and the fullness of coverage make these two volumes essential for an understanding of contemporary developments in both the Middle East and the post-Soviet Balkan world. The text of volume one is by Halil Inalcik, covering the period 1300-1600. The second volume, written by Suraiya Faroqhi, Bruce McGowan, Donald Quataert and Sevket Pamuk, continues the story to 1914. Each volume examines developments in population, trade, transport, manufacturing, land tenure and the economy, and extensive apparatus and bibliographic information is provided for students and others wishing to pursue the subject in more detail. Both volumes will be fundamental to any future discussion of any aspect of Ottoman history.

New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 204 p. Color and b/w ills. "Pessinous, the sacred city of the Anatolian Mother Goddess Kybele, is situated centrally on he Anatolian plateau, about 150 km southwest of the capital Ankara. A major part of the ancient city is situated under the modern village of Ballihisar. According to tradition, the site dates back to the Phrygian era as a cult site and settlement. The famous King Midas himself is supposed to have founded Pessinous and erected the first sanctuary of Kybele in the 8th century BC. The cult of the Mother Goddess spread first across the Greek world and then from Pessinous throughout the Roman Empire, and conquered the classical world. The excavations that have been carried out at the site since 1967 by the Belgian Archaeological teams of Ghent University have unearthed the heart of ancient Pessinous.".

Garstang during the excavations conducted at Mersin-Yumuktepe (1936-39 and 1946-47) and published in 1953 in the monograph "Prehistoric Mersin", with those produced during the excavations carried out from 1993 to 2004, under the direction of I. Caneva, for a comprehensive reconstruction of one of the most notorious levels of occupation at Yumuktepe. The long prehistoric occupational sequence reconstructed by Garstang, the first to have been established in the archaeology of Cilicia, quickly became one of the main references in the Near Eastern, Levantine and East Mediterranean archaeology. In this framework, the unique evidence represented by the "Citadel" of the Level XVI was often considered as a "hall-mark" of Yumuktepe and a recurring "topos" of the archaeological discourse dealing with the chalcolithic societies of the region. To confront with such a "giant" of the Near Eastern archaeology and with the heritage left by Garstang has not been an easy task. The integration of heterogeneous data produced in the frame of different practices, epistemologies and narratives of archaeology has required a long, continuous and sometimes quizzical process of interpolation and negotiation between past and present archaeological evidence aimed at a detailed and attentive reconstruction of the economic, social and cultural developments of the Early-Chalcolithic community at Yumuktepe. New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (23,5 x 16,5 cm). Color ills. 133 p. Thanks to the excavations Yumuktepe, we now know that the area in which modern Mersin is expanding constituted an exceptional center of life that acted as a meeting point between East and West, in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, for more than 9000 years. The archive of this uninterrupted sequence in history to this day lies, layer upon layer, at Yumuktepe, a mound of earth that stands in the very heart of the city. This aim of this small book is to provide the reader with a short summary of this long sequence of Mediterranean history, with all its peculiarities, using the most significant images from the excavations.

New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 23 cm). In French and Turkish. 218 p., b/w plts., xvi color numerous plts. Varia Anatolica XXIX. Introduction.
