Cr. 8vo. 20 x 135 cm. In Ottoman script Old Turkish with Arabic letters. 176 1 p. Lithographed edition. Extremely rare first and only edition of this guide to the distances and meridian calculations of some cities from Batumi located on the shores of Black Sea Europe until Great Britain Asia and Africa shores prepared for Turkish naval officers mariners and vessels describing the shores of the countries located on these routes. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ibrahim Edhem Pasha was an Ottoman statesman who held the office of Grand Vizier at the beginning of Abdul Hamid II's reign between 5 February 1877 and 11 January 1878. He resigned from that post after the Ottoman chances of winning the Russo-Turkish War 1877-1878 had decreased. He furthermore served in numerous administrative positions in the Ottoman Empire including minister of foreign affairs in 1856 then ambassador to Berlin in 1876 and to Vienna from 1879 to 1882. He also served as a military engineer and as Minister of Interior from 1883 to 1885. In 1876-1877 he represented the Ottoman Government at the Constantinople Conference. He was born in Chios of Greek ancestry in a Christian Greek Orthodox village on the island of Chios. Strangely his connection to Chios is not well-documented: his son Osman Hamdi Bey claimed that he was a member of the Scaramanga family but Edhem Pasha himself tried to efface his Greek connections. As a young boy in 1822 he was orphaned and captured by Ottoman soldiers during the massacre of the Greek population of Chios. He was sold into slavery brought to Constantinople and adopted by the later grand vizier Hüsrev Pasha. Lacking his own children and family Hüsrev Pasha raised about ten children who had been orphaned or bought as slaves many of whom ascended to important positions. The child now named Ibrahim Edhem quickly distinguished himself with his intelligence and after having attended schools in the Ottoman Empire he was dispatched along with a number of his peers and under the supervision of his father then grand vizier and of the sultan Mahmud II himself to Paris to pursue his studies under state scholarship. There he returned with a Bachelor of Arts and was one of the top pupils at the École des Mines. He was a classmate and a friend of Louis Pasteur. He thus became Turkey's first mining engineer in the modern sense and he started his career in this field. Edhem Pasha was the father of Osman Hamdi Bey a well-known archaeologist and painter as well as the founder of the Istanbul Archaeology Museum and the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Another son Halil Edhem Eldem took up the archaeology museum after Osman Hamdi Bey's death and has been a deputy for ten years under the newly founded Turkish Republic. Yet another son Ismail Galib Bey is considered the founder of numismatics as a scientific discipline in Turkey. Later generations of the family also produced illustrious names. The architect Sedat Hakki Eldem a cousin is one of the pillars of the search for modern architectural styles adopted by the Republic of Turkey called the Republican style in the Turkish context in its early years and which marks many important buildings dating from the period of the 1920s and the 1930s. A great-grandson Burak Eldem is a writer while another Edhem Eldem is a renowned historian. More names include Erol Eldem Tiana Eldem Levent Eldem and Ercan Eldem an architect. Source: Wikipedia. ‎IBRAHIM MUTEFERRIKA, (The founder of the first printing house in the Islamic world), (1674-1745).‎

‎["DECLARATION OF THE OTTOMAN EUROPEANIZATION": THE 9TH ISLAMIC INCUNABULA] Usûlü'l-hikem fî nizâmi'l-ümem. [i.e. The origins of thought and the order of the nations].‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Contemporary quarter dark burgundy leather bdg. Grey cloth boards. Four compartments at spine. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 96 p. [48 leaves]. 19 lines on each page. Printed on paper with European watermarks. A small tear up to the last page with no loss of text. Overall a fine copy. The 9th incunable of the Islamic world, written by Ibrahim Müteferrika and printed in his legendary Basmahane. Known as the most significant work by Müteferrika, this incunable is a political and state-theoretical treatise composed in order to improve the Ottoman government. In his book, Ibrahim Müteferrika used the sources written in Latin in the Europe of his period, and he presented it to Sultan Mahmud I right after the Patrona Halil Revolt (1730). Müteferrika divided the state forms of government in Europe into three groups with the titles "monarkiya" [i.e. monarchy], "aristokrasiya" [i.e. aristocracy], and "demokrasiya] [i.e. democracy]. In the work, the importance of the sciences (physics, astronomy, and geography) in the state administration was emphasized, and it was stated that a solid-state order could not be established in a country where these sciences were not developed. In addition to this, he used the term "Nizâm-i Cedîd" [i.e. The New Order] for the first time and stated that the Ottoman Empire should definitely adopt and implement the new military orders of the 18th century Europe. In addition, this work is one of the earliest in which the "democracy" term is used in the Islamic world. The book was published in French in Vienna and Paris in 1769 (Traite de la tactique ou méthode artificielle pour l'ordonnance des troupes, Vienne, 1769. Translated by Karl Emerich Alexander von Reviczky von Revisnye [Baron Reviczki]), and was translated from French into Russian in 1777. One of only 500 copies. The volume appeared in 1732, about one and a half years after the uprising of Patrona Halil Revolt which had overthrown the system of Sultan Ahmed III and Grand Vizier Damad Ibrahim. The writing, recalling the characteristics of Ottoman siyâsetnâme [i.e. the book of politics], calls the attention of the Ottoman leaders to the results of the state and military development and to the reasons for the strategic superiority of the rival European powers, while strongly condemning the several centuries long disinterest of the Ottomans to the external world. An important feature of the work is to break with the hitherto prevailing nostalgic attitude to bygone golden ages. Although observes the stylistic conventions in as much he speaks contemptuously about the Christian nations, in the content, already turns away from the indifference referring to the superiority of Islam. It announces in a list organized by items the reasons for the state's weakness and the conditions of rising. In harmony with the main aspects of contemporary Ottoman reforms, the work mainly focuses on the necessity of the reorganization of the army. It also offers a broader historical background by describing after the Greek philosophers the various types of states (6v-7v), or by treating the origins and reasons for the success of the foundations of European culture, the Roman Empire (19v-20v). The concept "Nizâm-I Cedîd" (i.e. the New Order), which would be used for the newly organized military formations of Sultan Selîm III (1789-1807), appears here for the first time referring to the modernized European army (17v-18r). "The utopistic optimism of Risâle-i Islâmîye may have had some rational basis, if one takes into account the Karlovci Treaty (1699) which was a rather positive correction in contrast to the previous series of Turkish failures in the Balkans, the European 'internal wars' of the first decade of the 18th century, and the experiences of the reform and peace years of the Tulip Period. However, the Usûl ül-hikem. was already inspired by the atmosphere after the Pozarevac Treaty (1718) which was a further stro‎

‎Very Good English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm) In English. 32 p., 3 b/w photos (full paged) and musical scores. From the collection of Metin And, (1927-2008). The wedding of a poet: A one-act comedy (1859). (The first modern Turkish play). Translated from Turkish by Edward Allworth. Cover design by Joan Attura. First English Edition of 'Sâir evlenmesi' in 1859. Rare. Sinasi was a pioneering Ottoman intellectual, author, journalist, translator, playwright, and newspaper editor. He was the innovator of several fields: he wrote one of the earliest examples of an Ottoman play, he encouraged the trend of translating poetry from French into Turkish, he simplified the script used for writing the Ottoman Turkish language, and he was one of the first of the Ottoman writers to write specifically for the broader public. Sinasi used his newspapers, Tercüman-i Ahvâl and Tasvir-i Efkâr, to promote the proliferation of European Enlightenment ideals during the Tanzimat period, and he made the education of the literate Ottoman public his personal vocation. Though many of Sinasi's projects were incomplete at the time of his death, "he was at the forefront of a number of fields and put his stamp on the development of each field so long as it contained unsolved problems.". Sinasi was an early proponent of a constitution for the Empire. Along with his colleague and friend Namik Kemal, Sinasi was one of the foremost leaders of the Young Ottomans, a secret society of Ottoman Turkish intellectuals pushing for further reform in the Ottoman Empire after Tanzimat in order to modernize and revitalize it by bringing it into line with the rest of Europe. Although Sinasi died before their goals for reform came to fruition, the Young Ottomans' efforts directly led to the first attempt at constitutional monarchy in the Empire in 1876, when the short-lived First Constitutional Era ushered in the writing of an Ottoman constitution and the creation of a bicameral parliament. Through his work as a political activist and one of the foremost literary figures of his time, Sinasi laid the groundwork in the minds of the public for contemporary and later reforms in the Ottoman Empire and, later, the modern Republic of Turkey. Sinasi's major contributions to reform and to Ottoman and Turkish culture were the result of his use of language. Prior to Sinasi, Namik Kemal, and Ziya Pasha, Ottoman writing was largely split into elite literature and folk literature. The writing of the elites was almost exclusively poetry (divan siiri) of a strict form, meter, and rhyme. It was written strictly in the Ottoman Turkish language, which incorporated vocabulary words from Arabic and Persian that were beyond the understanding of the common people (who spoke "vulgar Turkish" (kaba Türkçe), which more resembled Modern Turkish); it emphasized artistic excellence over communication. The elites wrote for each other, rather than for the general public. Both elite and folk literature incorporated elements of the Islamic tradition, but popular writing drew heavily on the Central Asian roots of the Ottomans. It employed both verse and prose, but members of the elite did not take it seriously. Sinasi altered the paradigm of writing within the Ottoman Empire by simplifying the language, intentionally engaging directly with an increasingly literate public, and introducing new, more European, genres to the masses. He attempted to forge a pure Turkish (öz Türkçe), through the elimination of words borrowed from other languages in order to make the content and style of his work more appealing and easier to comprehend. At the time of his death, Sinasi was working on a large-scale Turkish dictionary in order to help formalize the language. He also simplified the Arabic-based Ottoman Turkish script, combining the nashk and kufi calligraphy, but he "only succeeded in reducing the more than five hundred signs used since Muteferrika first cut his type to 112.".
