MUSTAFA B. ABDULLAH HALIFE KÂTIB [KATIP] ÇELEBI (Hadji Khalfa).
Sullamu al-wusûl ilâ tabaqât al-fuhûl.= The ladder of elevation to the lives of the great and famous by generation. 6 volumes set. Edited and Introduction by Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu in collaboration with Mahmoud al-Arnaut, Saleh Sadawi Saleh. Indices by Selahaddin Uygur.
New English Original bdg. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In English and Arabic. 6 volumes set. The present book is a critical edition of the major biographical work Sullam al-Wusul by Katib Chalabi (d. 1657), one of the most important Ottoman scholars of the 17th century. His most well-known works are Kashf al-Zunun (bibliographical), Sullam al-Wusul (biographical), Fezleke (general Islamic history) and Cihannuma (geographical). The first cited, an outstanding bibliography in history of science, and the last cited, were published many times. Sullam al-Wusul was not published until today (Fezleke either). The book is arranged in two editions of 6 volumes each. The main body is in Arabic in both editions, whereby the comprehensive Introduction by Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu and the Preface by Dr. Halit Eren are provided in also English in one of the editions and also in Turkish in the other edition. The sixth volume altogether is the Index. Work towards this publication was conducted at the initiative and under the editorship and coordination of Prof. Ihsanoglu on the occasion of the 2009 Katib Chalabi Year proclaimed by UNESCO. It was conceived in the context of IRCICA's objective to publish major sources of culture and learning that are part of the Muslim world's heritage and render them available to researchers. In the comprehensive Introduction, Ihsanoglu explores some features of Islamic literature in the area of biography as observed over the centuries. Historians of the Muslim world wrote hundreds of books in every branch of biography: 'While some of these contained the biographies of scholars belonging to specific branches of science or to certain sects, others dealt with the life stories of statesmen, scholars and religious authorities who lived in specific places or specific periods of time. These kinds of biographies were usually arranged by category and by date. Another type of biographies contained information on important statesmen, scholars, religious figures, authors, artists, etc. having lived in history. This type of general biography was usually arranged alphabetically. Katib Chalabi is the leading, or one of the leading personality among those who produced general biographies.' This biography records the lives and works of important statesmen and scholars in Islamic history and also of renowned personalities from pre-Islamic times who held a place in learning and literature. In the second part of the book Katib Chalabi gives information about the personalities' names derived from their places of origin or their genealogy. In the prologue, he explains the method he followed in the book, comments on the science of history, and adds information on names derived from places or genealogy. In this regard Sullam al-Wusul is also a book on genealogy. The Index section has been added to the edition. It is composed of four parts: personal names, place names, publication titles, names of institutions. A very heavy set. MUSTAFA BATMAN.
Tobacco smuggling in the Black Sea region of the Ottoman Empire, 1883-1914.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 150 p. Tobacco smuggling in the Black Sea region of the Ottoman Empire, 1883-1914. With the founding of the Régie in 1883, Ottoman tobacco producers were suddenly faced with a new company that took control over their mainstay crop. Tobacco producers and merchants who had problems with this new system came up with a variety of responses. One of these responses was the hiding and smuggling of the crop, and the number of tobacco smugglers rapidly increased. Many people from different sectors of the economy collaborated with the smugglers in order to make more money. The Ottoman government, worked to resolve the problems between the company and those working in the tobacco sector, but it failed to find a solution that would be satisfactory to all or that qualitatively would change the situation. It was the result of the different definition of ¿who is a smuggler' question by the government and the Régie. In the face of such vastly differing parameter, the Ottoman government could not reach a compromise with the Régie. Nor did the government create a new, alternative administration to the Régie because of the agreements between the Ottoman Public Debt Administration and the state. Within this context, this study examines the role of the ordinary people and the role of the organized movement against the monopolization of a crop. It is an attempt to show how the crowds in tobacco sector reacted to the changes in your daily lives.

31 Mart Vakasi.
Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Foolscap 8vo. (17 x 11 cm). In Turkish. 38, [2] p. A study on 31 Mart Incident in the Ottoman Empire, 1909. The 31 March Incident (Turkish: 31 Mart Vakasi or 31 Mart Olayi) was a 1909 rebellion of reactionaries in Istanbul against the restoration of the constitutional system that had taken place in 1908. It took place on 13 April 1909 (31 March on the Rumi calendar in use at the time in Turkey for official timekeeping). The countercoup had attempted to put an end to the nascent Second Constitutional Era in the Ottoman Empire and to the newly established influence of the Committee of Union and Progress, in order to re-affirm the position of the Sultan Abdul Hamid II as absolute monarch. The incident was a milestone in the Turkish military's encroaching on the political sphere.

MUSTAFA HALIM OZYAZICI Ottoman / Turkish calligrapher 1898 1964.
Autograph paper signed 'Hattat el-Hac Mustafa Halim'.
Istanbul: pre-1928. Soft cover. Fine. Original manuscript paper with its decorative frame. Paper size: 75x13 cm; frame size: 19x24 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. Signature of Halim by his very calligraphic style with 'Hattat el-Hac' title and seen one sentence down of paper: 'Gönderilen meblagi mütesekkir aldim hürmetlerim efendim' i.e. 'I received the amount sent thanks and gratitude'. Mustafa Halim Özyazici was an Ottoman calligrapher and one of the last of the classical Ottoman calligraphers using the Arabic script. He was a versatile calligrapher with a high level of expertise in many styles of script but was widely regarded as a master jeli-thuluth. He is most noted for his work on various restoration projects of both manuscripts and public buildings. He was born Mustafa Abdülhalim on 14 January 1898 in the Hazeki district of Istanbul. He was the son of Nalinci Haci Cemâl Efendi originally from Crimea and his mother was Sudanese. He was educated at Gülsen Junior High School where he was given lessons in calligraphy by Hamid Aytaç who recognised his talent and encouraged him to pursue calligraphy as a career. He later studied drawing and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul. His formal calligraphy studies were with Hasan Riza Effendi 1849-1920 and Kamil Akdik 1862-1941 where he mastered the thuluth nasih and riqâ scripts. In 1916 he was drafted into the Army. After completing basic training he worked in the Military Printing Department and also worked in Evkâf-i Islâmiyye Printing Press. Following his discharge from the Army in 1924 he opened an office in Bâbiâli Street The Sublime Porte where he prepared all types of calligraphy; business cards seals and book covers. He also taught in various schools around the Cagaloglu district of Istanbul. From 1927 he was employed in the Imperial Chancery. When the Latin alphabet replaced Arabic lettering in 1928 he applied to go to Egypt where classical calligraphy using Arabic script was still valued but his application was rejected in 1929. He subsequently abandoned calligraphy altogether. However during the 1940s his skills in classical calligraphy found an outlet when he became part of a major restoration project which worked on repairs to numerous manuscripts in a variety of styles and the restoration of calligraphic reliefs and monumental art in historic public buildings including many mosques. In 1948 he was appointed to the position of 'old writing teacher' at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul; a position he retained until his retirement in 1963. One of his responsibilities was to write the diplomas for those who were about to graduate from the Academy. He died on 30 September 1964 ten days after being involved in a traffic accident. He was buried in the Kozlu Cemetery. Although he developed expertise in many different types of script he was regarded as a master of jeli-thuluth script. He wrote a number of exercise books for students to practice scripts in nesih thuluth-nesih riq'a diwânî and jeli diwânî and which were part of a program designed to promote the art of calligraphy. These books are still being printed and distributed to students of calligraphy. <br/> <br/> pre-1928 paperback

He also taught in various schools around the Cagaloglu district of Istanbul. From 1927, he was employed in the Imperial Chancery. When the Latin alphabet replaced Arabic lettering in 1928, he applied to go to Egypt, where classical calligraphy, using Arabic script, was still valued, but his application was rejected in 1929. He subsequently abandoned calligraphy altogether. However, during the 1940s, his skills in classical calligraphy found an outlet when he became part of a major restoration project which worked on repairs to numerous manuscripts in a variety of styles and the restoration of calligraphic reliefs and monumental art in historic, public buildings, including many mosques. In 1948, he was appointed to the position of 'old writing teacher' at the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul; a position he retained until his retirement in 1963. One of his responsibilities was to write the diplomas for those who were about to graduate from the Academy. He died on 30 September, 1964, ten days after being involved in a traffic accident. He was buried in the Kozlu Cemetery. Although he developed expertise in many different types of script, he was regarded as a master of jeli-thuluth script. He wrote a number of exercise books for students to practice scripts in nesih, thuluth-nesih, riq'a, diwânî and jeli diwânî, and which were part of a program designed to promote the art of calligraphy. These books are still being printed and distributed to students of calligraphy.

Very calligraphic head title in very decorative heart-shaped border and traditional flowers, a couple of scepters with two snakes. Orthography with 'haraka' [i.e. Arabic diacritics]. The heads of each chapter are surrounded by very decorative flowers and borders. An early printed lithographed book designed as a manuscript with its 'kataba' [i.e. imprint]. Slightly stained on pages, minor chipped on upper corners of two pages. Otherwise a very good and very clean copy. Lithographed edition. First and only edition of the first printed Turkish book on the antidotes and poisons. It's written by Mirliva Mustafa Hâmi Pasha, one of the early Ottoman physicists, during the reign of Sultan Abdulmecid II. Hami Pasha served as a military physicist, botanist, and doctor in the Ottoman army in the first half of the 19th century in Hejaz and Yemen. He joined an Ottoman Military expedition to Yemen. The aim of this expedition was to bring Yemen under Ottoman control again. On 23 March 1849, the expeditionary corps marched out of Jeddah. He as a trained medical man practicing in Yemen, also concerned himself with various illnesses. The existence of poisonous animals and plants in the book is mostly based on their experiences in Yemen and Hejaz. His purpose of writing this treatise which he started with prayer and praise to Sultan Abdulmecid II, was the need to explain that it is not good for all poisons, what the real antidotes are, contrary to the belief of a stone known as the "antidote stone" among the people. After the chapter of Muqaddima [i.e. Introduction], poisoning caused by mines and their antidotes is explained in the first chapter. In other chapters, poisons consisting of plant and animal substances, poisons in flowing and air, and in addition to these, the first interventions to be made with plants that have an antidote effect on drowning in water, convulsion, drowning by hanging, drowning from the smell of flowers, freezing are explained. Hami Pasha, who decided to collect this information in a book right after his participation in the 1849 Yemen Expedition (the flora and fauna in his book mostly based on Yemen and its around), printed his book as a lithograph in 1855 at the Amire Printing House, with the encouragement of Sultan Abdülmecid II (who read the manuscript of this text) and the efforts of typographer Muhammed Recai. Only one copy in OCLC in Aga Khan Library in London: 1124680097.; Özege 16131.

MUSTAFA KAYMAKÇI, CIHAN ÖZGÜN, FUAT YALDIZ.
Turkish foundations in Rhodes and Kos.
New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 304 p., ills. Turkish foundations in Rhodes and Kos. Turks living in the Aegean islands of Rhodes and Kos under Greek sovereignty have a multitude of problems at present. These can be summarized under various headings such as Citizenship, the Right to Education in Turkish, Free Practice of Religion, Environment of Hatred and Oppression, Foundations (Waqfs) and Protection of Cultural Heritage Inherited from the Ottoman Turks. Greece has been implementing various policies for the cultural assimilation of Island Turks. Part of cultural assimilation policies adopted by Greece was its actions towards cutting off all ties between the Turkish foundations and island Turks, and consequently destroying architectural monuments inherited from the Ottomans. It is known that establishment of the foundations on the islands started with the Ottoman conquest of Rhodes and Kos in 1522. Over the centuries, foundations led to the development of a feeling of unity and solidarity among the island Turks. Foundations have provided opportunities for island Turks in important areas from worship services to education and has also contributed to the preservation of common traditions. After the end of the Second World War, the island was assigned to the sovereignty of Greece in 1947, Greece started launching a policy for the gradual destruction of Muslim Turkish foundations. Unlike other foundations in Greece, foundations in Rhodes and Kos are subject to heavy taxes in addition to the same property taxes as commercial institutions. On the other hand, the Greek governments compelled the foundations to sell part of their properties by continuously forcing the Foundation Administration to make huge payments. By dwindling the Turkish foundations, Greece has been trying to bring the Turkish presence in Rhodes and Kos to an end. In summary, the Turks living in Rhodes and Kos today are on the brink of losing their Turkishness let alone preserving their cultural identity, including foundations. An atmosphere of fear prevails among the island Turks and they feel intimidated. We wish that the book Turkish Foundations in Rhodes and Kos will be beneficial to researchers who will conduct studies on this subject and also raise awareness in the international arena on the assimilation policies implemented by Greece.
