‎Elemterefis: Superstitious beliefs and occult in the Ottoman Empire, (1839-1923).‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 522 p. Elemterefis: Superstitious beliefs and occult in the Ottoman Empire, (1839-1923). This book is about the social history of superstitious beliefs and especially magic and sorcery. I mainly tried to examine how superstitious beliefs and magic transformed the daily life of the Ottoman Empire into a world of superstitions in the nineteenth century. However, I had to go further back when I deepened my research into the origin of superstitious beliefs and magic seen in almost every period of the Ottoman Empire. I looked at polytheistic religions like shamanism, Animism, Manichaenism, Buddhism and Hinduism, which were the common religious beliefs of the former Turkish world. I included various other pagan religions and cultures underlying the past of the Ottoman geography over three continents as well as Judaism, Zoroastrianism, Christianity, the Sky God belief in Central Asia and finally Islam. In the Ottoman Empire, ¿professional¿ magicians were of the ulema class who were not reluctant to utilize religious knowledge for their personal interests. In fact, they began to live immorally; ¿amateur¿ magicians were composed of occult groups, a.k.a. pseudo-clergy. I followed magic and magicians included in the documents of the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives only as they were caught as a result of a complaint. Füsun and Efsun, daughters of Cinci Arif Hoca, and their story add local and authentic flavor to the points made in the book.‎

‎Evanescent happiness: Ottoman Jews encounter modernity. The case of Lea Mitrani and Joseph Niego, (1863-1923).‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 274 p. Evanescent happiness: Ottoman Jews encounter modernity. The case of Lea Mitrani and Joseph Niego, (1863-1923). This book aims to be a collective biography of Joseph Niego and Lea Mitrani, two Ottoman Jews, whose lives spanned a sixty-year period of profound changes for Ottoman Jewry. Born in Edirne, Joseph and Lea were educated in the schools of the Alliance Israélite Universelle. Subsequently, they were sent to Paris in order to be trained as teachers and be sent back to help "regenerate" Ottoman Jews through a Western-style education. After their marriage, Joseph was appointed director of the agricultural school "Mikveh Israel," established by the Alliance in the outskirts of Jaffa, where the family would reside for twelve years. Their time in an agricultural school and contact with Zionism and the Jewish pioneers in late nineteenth-century Palestine would define their lives as a married couple and as Jews in the vortex of modernization and nationalism. While Joseph would thrive professionally, Lea would gradually lose control of her life.‎

‎Women, war and work in the Ottoman Empire: Society for the employment of Ottoman Muslim women, (1916-1923).‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 582 p. World War I deeply altered the lives of Muslim Ottoman women. The Ottoman Army consisted only of Muslim men and war caused the death of one and a half million Muslim Ottoman men. The heavy losses of the Ottoman army meant that every day more and more dependants lost their breadwinners. When the breadwinner had gone to war, was wounded or died at the front; the wives, daughters, sisters and mothers they had left behind were faced with two options: to find work and make a living, or to starve to death. On 14 August 1916, the Committee of Union and Progress (Ittihâd ve Terakkî Cemiyeti), the ruling party of the Ottoman Empire, established a new society under the leadership of one of its leading figures: Vice-Commander and Minister of War, Enver Pasa. The Society for the Employment of Ottoman Muslim Women (Kadinlari Çalistirma Cemiyet-i Islâmiyesi) was a Unionist organization created to find employment for Muslim Ottoman women who were in urgent economic need. Within a matter of months, it received more than 14,000 applications and was soon employing 8,194 destitute Ottoman women in its braches and in the related state and military institutions. In time, it would offer jobs to an aggregate number of 20,000 women workers, and became the leading employer of Muslim Ottoman women in the Ottoman Empire. This comprehensive work constitutes both a case study of Muslim Ottoman women during World War I, and a detailed analysis of the foundation, organization and activities of the Society for the Employment of Ottoman Muslim Women, created to find employment for them.‎

‎The urban development of Istanbul in the Nineteenth century: The role of expropriations.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 200 p. The urban development of Istanbul in the Nineteenth century: The role of expropriations. After the proclamation of the Tanzîmât Edict, the government wanted to re-arrange the city. To this end, the Building and Expropriation Regulations that determined how modern city planning would be made as of 1840 were published. It was clearly stated that the government would base expropriations made to expand roads, allotment of burnt areas again, determination of construction rules, and opening the areas where reconstruction was not allowed to settlement,in essence all new urban development activities on these new laws. While expropriations were carried out, it was emphasized that, especially when for "public interest", the operation would be made with the consent of the landowner and after the preparation of maps. All of these can be said to be the reflections of modernity. This book examines the expropriation activities which were the most important tools for the government in the process of reconstruction implemented in Istanbul in the nineteenth century. It argues that the urban development which is at the intersection of centralization and modernization, and the concept of modern expropriation was a consequence of the change in the perspective and the understanding of the Ottoman government. Additionally, in the book, while the concept of modern expropriation is being evaluated in relation to the transformation in the governmental and legal mentality, the economic and social aspects of the expropriations are also emphasized. Other reconstruction processes occurring in other cities in the Ottoman Empire and other European cities which were taken as models in the reconstruction process of the capital city were investigated and documented here for the sake of approaching the expropriations from a comparative angle. This book aims to offer a holistic addition to literature on the urban history of Istanbul in the nineteenth century.‎

‎The construction of female citizenship through etiquette books: Turkey, 1930-1943.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 140 p. The construction of female citizenship through etiquette books: Turkey, 1930-1943. This book is an investigation into how the etiquette books of the early Republican period attempted to shape society in terms of class and gender issues. The analysis of the books, which are important tools to "civilize" society in both the public and private domains, is important because of their effects on the different dimensions of the period's discourse around citizenship. Through etiquette codes, the ideal citizen who would constitute the new privileged class of the Republic was to be constructed in accordance with the discourse of Westernization, but conspicuously adapted to local circumstances. Accordingly, not only the citizen's dress and deportment, but also the citizen's body and sexual life were to be completely renewed. On the other hand, while the books were defining the "acceptable" citizen, women were taken as an important measure of compliance. Thus, as the symbols of the new and modern life, women's appearance, manners, and all feminine pursuits became signifiers of the social status of modern Turkish men. Consequently, this book reveals that the class and gender dimensions of etiquette books are not independent of each other, but intersect and support one another.‎

‎The oral and the written in Ottoman literature: The reader notes on the story of Firuzsah.‎

‎New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 306 p. The oral and the written in Ottoman literature: The reader notes on the story of Firuzsah. In contemporary studies of Ottoman literature, a two-layered scheme is used which divides Ottoman literature into two parts, 'folk' literature and 'court' literature. In these studies, the oral is totally attributed to folk literature, while court literature is considered entirely written. However, these two ways of producing, transmitting, and consuming literature, the oral and the written, have always existed together, nourishing and transforming each other. This thesis challenges the constructed binary opposition between the oral and the written in Ottoman literature studies, focusing on a popular work called the Story of Fîrûzsâh, widely read throughout the eighteenth century. For the purposes of this thesis, Fîrûzsâh is especially important because of its paratextual elements. The manuscript under study, actually the forty-fifth volume of the entire story, contains many marginal notes. These notes give information about the names of the public readers, and the places and dates of the public readings. In addition, there are notes that show the daily, aesthetic, and even political reactions of the readers in the eighteenth century. Depending on these reactions, four types of readers were identified and named the romantic, the pedantic, the foul-mouthed and the Janissary. Focusing on the case of the Story of Fîrûzsâh, it has been shown that aspects of oral culture and their everyday expressions can also be traced from written texts.‎

‎Ulema and politics: The life and political works of Ömer Ziyâeddin Dagistânî, (1849-1921).‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 151 p. This work is an analysis of the life of Ömer Ziyâeddin Dagistânî (1849-1921) and two of his political works, which he completed as a Sufi scholar (âlim). Throughout his life, he served in various parts of the Ottoman Empire as well as occupying various positions such as mufti of a regiment (alaymüftüsü), deputy judge (nâib), professor (müderris), and Naqshbandi sheikh. He wrote two political works during the Second Constitutional Period: Hadis-i Erbaînfî Hukuki's-Selâtîn and Mir'ât-i Kânûn-i Esâsî. This study makes use of the biography writing as a theoretical framework. The method of analysis consists of qualitative research and written history found in archival documents. This study will shed light on Dagistânî's life and the events that occurred during his life span, and makes use of primary sources as well as secondary sources. By focusing on his life, political works, and ideas as a scholar, this thesis will contribute to the studies on interconnectedness between individual and institutional aspects of social reality in the context of biography.‎

‎From Mudros to Lausanne: How Ahmed Emin's perception of the "Other" changed.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 183 p. From Mudros to Lausanne: How Ahmed Emin's perception of the "Other" changed. This book explores the life and ideas of the eminent liberal journalist, Ahmed Emin (Yalman)'s changing perceptions of the "other" in the Armistice Period (1918-1923) and beyond. Throughout the work, Ahmed Emin's perception of non-Muslim Ottomans, non-Turkish Muslims and the Western powers, as well as the changes in these perceptions are all analyzed through both qualitative and quantitative methods and based on content analysis. In addition to his editorials, published in the two newspapers Vakit and Vatan in Istanbul during the Armistice Period, his narration and reconstruction of the past events in his memoirs (one of which was composed in English) are also included in the comparative analysis. The work shows that, along with the continuous elements in his writings, such as his almost unchanging liberal-Westernist ideology, Ahmed Emin's opinions were subject to change in accordance with changes on the ground and shifts in power configurations.‎

‎Prince Sabahattin and liberal thoughts in the Second Constitution.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 208 p. The most influential figure among the opponents to Sultan Abdülhamid was undoubtedly, Prince Sabahattin, the sultan's nephew and ardent opponent, who also inspired other Comittee of Union and Progress opponents. The aim of this study is to analyze Sabahattin, always a subject of political polarization in Turkish political literature, objectively, to determine the intellectual foundations of his opposition and to interrogate the scientific basis and applicability of the social reforms he defended. Other opponent parties discussed in connection with Sabahattin's views has helped us determine the liberal positioning in that period.‎

‎Ezra Benveniste, 1827-1899. Pionnier du journalisme Judeo-Espagnol.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In French. 298 p. Ezra Benveniste, 1827-1899.

‎Akhtar: A Persian language newspaper published in Istanbul and the Iranian community of the Ottoman Empire in the Late Nineteenth century.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 163 p. Akhtar: A Persian language newspaper published in Istanbul and the Iranian community of the Ottoman Empire in the Late Nineteenth century. By the second half of the nineteenth century Istanbul had become an important social and political environment for many Iranian activists and politicians who had been exiled from Iran. This community formed a highly active opposition base involved in Iranian politics from abroad. Although a certain amount of background material can be found in the literature concerning this community, no significant work has yet been carried out on its impact on political, social and literary reform in Iran. The publication of Akhtar from Istanbul is but one of the many agents of change that was a product of the Iranian colony in Istanbul. The present work is a preliminary investigation of the Iranian community of Istanbul in the late nineteenth century as studied through the lens of the offices of Persian-language newspaper Akhtar.‎

The book titles 'Mosaics of Anatolia' is the variegated great adventure of the square that has existed on earth for thousand of years. At the same time, when each mosaic square is aligned next to each other they are like the sentences created by the words in a literary text: as an epic of the concept of depiction inspired by the myths of past civilisations. In this great adventure, the art of mosaics sometimes focused on the legends told by people, sometimes on daily life and sometimes on holy texts by tracking the past of nature at all times. A great journey in the infinity of colourful cubes. Therefore, the subjects of our book are the squares of both reknowned and unknown cultures who have settled in and emigrated from Anatolian lands. Like the diary of a traveler, we have withessed and catalogued the existence of the art of mosaics in every part of Anatolia. Each and every one of them is a meaningful visual feast telling the stories of settling and emigrating civilisations. ISBN: 9786055495107. ARCHEOLOGY Anatolian civilizations History of art Mosaic.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (30 x 29 cm). In English. 204 p., ills. Polonezköy: The eagle under the crescent and star. The culture array of Polonezköy expanding from Nazim Hikmet to Gencer, from Franz Liszt to Atatürk, from Gustave Flaubert to Pierre Loti, from Chopin to Czeslaw Milosz, from music to literature- is exposed by the book and photographs of the artist Akgün Akova. Artist Akgün Akova has got over five thousand photographs depicting Turkey and over four hundred articles about the country that appeared in magazines like Voyager, Skylife and National Geographic etc. The book titled 'The Eagle beneath the Crescent and Star: Polonezköy' by Akgün Akova aims at showing the meaning and importance of a tiny village in Istanbul that serves European culture and world peace. Founded in 1842 in Beykoz, Istanbul, the village Polonezköy established a strong bond between Turkey and Poland.
