‎Mosaics in Istanbul.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (32 x 24,5 cm). In English. 175 p., color ills. "The book brings together the extant mosaics of the Great Palace (Büyük Saray Mosaic Museum), Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya Museum), the Virgin Pammakaristos (Fethiye Museum), St. Saviour in Chora (Kariye Museum) and Istanbul Archaeological Museums. Except for the few panels brought from elsewhere and now kept in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, all of the mosaics in this book were made in Istanbul, known then as Constantinople. Chronologically, the earliest of these mosaics is from the late Roman period and the latest from the early fourteenth century. Even if they are far from giving the development of the art of mosaic in the capital these pavements reflect the importance that was afforded to this art. In this volume they are grouped under the name of the monument to which they belong. Constantinople suffered so many natural disasters and had to be rebuilt so many times that the mosaics which decorated the buildings of the late Roman/early Byzantine period, lie under modern buildings in the debris of fires and earthquakes. Unless some of these are encountered accidentally during construction work and salvaged, there is almost no hope of bringing them to light.".‎

‎The arms of the sultans: The arms collection of Topkapi Palace.‎

‎New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (32 x 25 cm). English Edition. 241, [1] p., color ills. The arms of the sultans. The arms collection of Topkapi Palace. Translated by Alev (Kerimoglu) Bulut. "Weapon is a device that was developed by the mankind in the ancient ages for protection against the events of nature and enemies. The arms that were used for the functions of drilling, cutting, defense, and the firing function to be acquired later, were accepted as works of art owing to the mastery and craftsmanship skills that they display. The present work title The arms of the sultans. The arms collection of Topkapi Palace was prepared for the purpose of presenting to the readers The Arms of Collection of the Topkapi Palace Museum, where some of the rarest examples of these works of art are on display, as a whole along with an analysis of its fundamental attributes". Covering 1,300 years and consisting of 52,000 weapons of Arab, Umayyad, Abbasid, Mamluk, Persian, Turkish, Crimean Tartar, Indian, European, and Japanese origin, the Topkapi Palace Museum's weaponry collection is also among the world's premier weapons collections. The collection is made up in part of weapons transferred from the cebehâne and those used by the palace guards; however, the collection's most noteworthy section consists of those weapons ordered by the sultan personally or specially made as gifts for him, which weapons are a part of the palace's private collection. This collection includes weaponry owned by such sultans as Mehmed II, Bayezid II, Selim the Grim, Suleiman the Magnificent, Selim II, Mehmed II, and Ahmed I, as well as the weapons of such high-level dignitaries as grand viziers, pashas, and palace chamberlains; all of these weapons are eye-catching with their fine craftsmanship and decorations. An additional factor that contributed to the diversification of the collection's highly artistic weaponry was the tradition of bringing to the palace the weapons of important figures that were obtained through plunder.‎

‎Die Laodikeiakirche. Das Christentum im Lykostal.‎

‎New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In German. 106 p., color ills.

‎New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In French. 106 p., color ills.

This exhibition tells the tale of the Istanbul-centred travels of curious Westerners, who ventured out to the East from the 18th century onwards. Geographers, archaeologists, linguists, architects, botanist and clergymen all travelled across the East from the late 18th until the mid-19th century researching their particular interests. After the Crimean War, the expedition-oriented travel that was so popular until the 1850s was replaced by a different kind of travel. The objective was no longer information gathering, but tourism. Based on materials selected from the vast collection of Pierre de Gigord, one of the leading collectors of Ottoman-era photographs and ephemera, this exhibition sheds light on the early years of mass tourism that replaced individual journeys of discovery and transformed travel culture.‎

‎CELAL SIMSEK.‎

‎Laodikeia kilisesi. Lykos Vadisi'nde Hiristiyanlik.‎

‎New English Paperback. PRoy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish. 106 p., color ills. Since 2003 excavations and restoration work at Laodikeia on the Lykos have been Undertaken by the author on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Pamukkale University. The work conducted has shown that the history of Laodikeia, which is located within the borders of Eskihisar, Goncali and Bozburun neighbourhoods (former villages) and surrounded by rivers, namely Asopos, Kadmos, and Lykos, on three sides 6 km the north of Denizli, goes back to 5500s BC, not to the third century BC as was formerly thought. The city experienced numerous earthquakes, some very devastating, but always rebuilt; however, the earthquake in the reign of Focas (r. 602-610) razed her to the ground; the site was abandoned and the survivors settled at Kaleig of Denizli and Hisarkoy on the northern foots of Salbakos (Babadag). The city of Laodikeia had her high times during the Roman Imperial period and Late Antiquity when Christianity spread from the fourth to the sixth century. As the city was one of the first Seven Churches she became a metropolitan see quite early. Evidence uncovered indicates that the lifestyle of the city changed with Christianity and the city became a venue of pilgrimage as of the fourth century. With the spread of churches as architectural monuments across the city it is observed that some rooms in the houses with peristyle courts were converted to oratories building up a tradition of family chapels. This short work first tells briefly about the spread of Christianity in the region and churches in the city. This book's main focus is the Church of Laodikeia uncovered in 2010; therefore, you will find detailed information on its architecture, fountains, pastophoria, synthronon, ambo, bema, altar, baptistery and the corridor leading to it, frescoes, opus sectile flooring, and mosaics and the dating based on excavation finds. Furthermore, the protective roof project and the steel-and-glass catwalk for visitors are presented comprehensively.‎
