DOGAN KUBAN, (1926-).
Istanbul an urban history. Byzantion, Constantinopolis, Istanbul.
Fine English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (28 x 22 cm). In English. 485 p., color and b/w ills. Istanbul an urban history. Byzantion, Constantinopolis, Istanbul. First Edition. This is not a book on archaeology, nor, although it lays particular stress on the architecture, an architectural history of Istanbul. It is an attempt to present the urban history of a world-city called Istanbul, Constantinople, Byzantion in different periods of its history. It delineates historical circumstances, or sudden ruptures, but above all, it attempts to present this unique world-city as experienced by its citizens and visitors, and as imagined by the world at large. While recent researches on the topography, history and monuments of the city are integrated in the text, my intention is to present the essence of the historical image of Istanbul contextually within physical, social and cultural framework. I have no intention of breaking new ground on the topography of the city, but I wish to convey the terms of a unique human experience in one of the longest surviving cities of the world, built in a most beautiful and enchanting landscape. The great Byzantine scholar R. Janin speaks of various "visages" of the city composed through the rhythms of life or caprices of the emperors. Most of this intricate relationships created in millennia between men, site, and artifact are gone and difficult to visualize. In writing this urban history, while I try to remain objective, I know that I create a literary model using as reference the least changed of the historical elements, the surviving monuments, the site with its basic shape and articulations, and contemporary accounts -not necessarily sources of hard facts, but as primary expressions, reactions and emotions. Thus tryingto keep myself away, as far as possible, from speculation and methods of criminal fiction, I have delineated the history of this grandiose, dramatic and often cruel city of Istanbul

Makka Al-Mukarrama and Al-Madina Al-Munawwara in photographs from the Ottoman period.= Osmanli dönemi fotograflariyla Haremeyn.= Fotograf dari zaman Uthmaniyah.
New English Original imitation leather bdg. in traditional Ottoman style. In publisher's special box. Oblong folio. (30 x 44 cm). In English, Turkish, and Arabic. 313 p., b/w photos. Makka Al-Mukarrama and Al-Madina Al-Munawwara in photographs from the Ottoman period.= Osmanli dönemi fotograflariyla Haremeyn.= Fotograf dari zaman Uthmaniyah. Makkah and Madinah are specifically safeguarded by Islamic jurisprudence and considered to be "harem" (sacred) and are called "haremeyn", meaning sacred cities. They were where the Holy Qur'an was revealed and the originating points of the Islamic faith's history and civilisation, besides being the locations where Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) spent his worldly days. They are maintained not only as places of worship, but also as sources of inspiration and invaluable heritage of the Islamic civilisation. In support of this effort, the National Visual Arts Development Board (NVADB) in cooperation with IRCICA, a body established under the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), is currently presenting an exhibition of rare photographs that record various events that took place in Makkah and Madinah during the Ottoman rule. The photographs offer the audience the bucolic glimpse of how both holy cities looked like prior to massive modernisation and development, including the conditions that pilgrims of the past had to endure when performing Hajj and Umrah, which strike a chord among present day pilgrims. Holy Islamic vestiges such as the domes the cover the cemetery of Prophet Muhammad's immediate family members and companions in Madinah that had been demolished could also be seen in the images displayed. The photographs exhibited are selected from the collection of Sultan Abdulhamid II (r. 1876 - 1909), the 34th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire who was also known as "The Great Khan", and from the collection of Fahreddin Pasha (1868 - 1948), the Commander of the Ottoman Army and Governor of Madinah, also known as "The Lion of the Desert." Some of these exhibits have been preserved and maintained by IRCICA, which is involved in research, publication, archives and documentation on Islamic history, culture and civilisation.

New Italian Original bdg. HC. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In Italian with Turkish abstracts. 372 p., color ills., 2 DVDs, 8 folded plans.

REFIK DURU.
From 8000 BC to 2000 BC six thousand years of the Burdur-Antalya region.
New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (29 x 22 cm). Edition in English. [x], 194 p., color and b/w ills. From 8000 BC to 2000 BC six thousand years of the Burdur-Antalya region. When attempting to understand and comment on the civilisation in which we live, one of the subjects that arouses the most curiosity is undoubtedly the desire to learn the stages that mankind has passed through to reach this point in time. In the book in front of you the author has attempted to describe, with archaeological facts, some of the development process of civilisation in the prehistoric period before the discovery of writing, from around 8000 to 2000 BC, in the region of Southwest Anatolia, Burdur and Antalya. The presence of many impressive city and monuments from the Classical Period in the Antalya and Burdur regions and their vicinity reflects the importance of this region in historical times. However, the region also has important and interesting finds from the prehistoric periods. One of the aims of this book is to introduce and describe as many as possible of the visual finds uncovered in the excavations carried out over the past 50 years at the four main prehistoric settlements of the region, Hacilar, Kurucay, Hoyucek and Bademagaci. While some of the pictures, drawings and plans are presented for the first time in this book, most of them have been published before in excavation reports, books or articles. However, as is the case in most academic fields, the majority of these publications are only read by professionals, making it virtually impossible for most people to have access to them. It is hoped that this book will help to change this situation to a degree, as it has been presented in such a way as to enable all those interested in the subject to benefit from the information given.

Architectural survey at the necropolis of Larisa (Buruncuk).= Larisa (Buruncuk) nekropolünde mimari arastirmalar.
New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English and Turkish. 260 p., color ills. Architectural survey at the necropolis of Larisa (Buruncuk).= Larisa (Buruncuk) nekropolünde mimari arastirmalar. In the second issue of ITU Foundation - Architectural History Research, the necropolis of ancient Larisa (Buruncuk), an important Aegean site, is displayed along with the architectural documentation of its grave units. This main topic is complemented by a text on the first map of Larisa from 1900 and a general description of the site. The necropolis of Larisa predominantly consists of small grave mounds with a ring- wall. The southernmost edge of the entire terrain is crowned by the Great Tumulus which is of colossal size. The formation of the necropolis must have occurred essentially between the 6 th and 4 th centuries BCE. However, discussions of dating, considerations on the social aspect of the graves, and the re-evaluation of 20 th century burial finds will be accomplished over time only after the termination of fieldwork. The texts, drawings and photographs in this issue serve the intention of registering the Larisa survey as an ITU Project, and presenting immediately the city's necropolis that is of great importance for the studies on the region.

The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue].
New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 360 p., color ills. The lure of the East: British orientalist painting.= Dogu'nun cazibesi: Britanya oryantalist resmi. [Exhibition catalogue]. This exhibition focused on the paintings made by British artists of the 'Orient', primarily during the nineteenth century. In this context the term 'Orient', to Western Europeans, meant those parts of the eastern Mediterranean world which could be accessed relatively easily such as Egypt, Palestine and Turkey, particularly after the development of steamboat and rail travel in the 1830s. In these places, predominantly Muslim and at least nominally under the control of the Ottoman Empire, British artists, such as David Roberts, David Wilkie, William Holman Hunt, John Frederick Lewis and Frederic Leighton, sought to develop imagery which captured what they believed to be characteristic of the people, cities and landscapes of the region. In the 1970s the Palestinian-American academic Edward Said published his treatise on Orientalism, initiating a global debate over Western representations of the Middle East. For many, such representations now appeared to be a sequence of fictions, serving the West's desire for superiority and control over the East. The argument for and against Said's Orientalism has continued for thirty years. Its resonance for an exhibition such as this one, however, is as strong as ever given that, by the 1920s (the end of the period covered by this exhibition), Britain was in direct control of much of the newly abolished Ottoman Empire, including Egypt, Palestine and Iraq. As Said argued, these images cannot be viewed in isolation from their wider political and cultural context. Keeping the debates around Orientalism in mind, "The Lure of the East" focuses on the range of pictorial options open to British artists, within five major themes: portraits, genre, religious and domestic subjects and landscape. British painters came to the Middle East from a culture steeped in technical and compositional artistic traditions. Such traditions were not easily unlearned, despite the apparent difference of the people and places the artists encountered on their travels. Given this, British Orientalist painters found many challenges in attempting to represent the Middle East, but they also found inspiration and, more importantly, the freedom to rework, reinvent and even discard those conventions that defined picture-making in Britain.
