‎Shoes from the Sadberk Hanim Museum Collection.= Pabuç. Sadberk Hanim Müzesi Koleksiyonundan. [Exhibition catalogue].‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Oblong 4to. (26 x 28 cm). In English and Turkish. 291, [1] p., color ills. "Sadberk Hanim Museum contains a magnificent collection of Ottoman women's garments dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries, based on Sadberk Koç's original private collection. As the collection has grown, so has the number of shoes, which although not large represents the diverse range of footwear worn during that period. A thematic exhibition, "Shoes from the Sadberk Hanim Museum Collection" aims to acquaint the general public with the museum's shoe collection. The collection consists mainly of late Ottoman shoes and slippers, together with a small number made in Central Asia, Iran, North Africa, India and Europe. It also includes some examples dating from the early years of the Turkish Republic, established in 1923. The exhibition presents 127 examples of diverse footwear, including boots, shoes, slippers and clogs, some of which represent traditional types while others illustrate the influence of European fashions. Most of the shoes are made of leather or fabric and embroidered with metal wire and metal wrapped thread, or additionally with silk thread, sequins, beads and other decorative materials. Clogs carved from wood and decorated with mother-of-pearl, ivory, silver and other materials were widely used in Ottoman daily life and form an eye-catching section of the exhibition. Shoes containing labels provide information about the shoe manufacturers and retailers of the late Ottoman period.".‎

‎Prince Dimitrie Cantemir: Theorist and composer of Turkish music.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 16 cm). 224 p. In English. The present book is not limited to the study of Cantemir's treatise on Ottoman music. It first gives us the complete story of his eventful and dramatic life including his Russian stage and an account of his multifarious activities. In the same chapter the writer goes through not only his history of the Ottoman empire but other Cantemir books and other Romanian sources about the Prince and familiarises us with the content of these works. Her quotations from and references to various non-standard sources make this part of the book more useful and appealing. I believe this introduction will become a standard source for anybody who is to consider Cantemir's life, his story and other works.‎

‎Amasya: Maid of the mountains. Photographs by Ali Konyali - Tarkan Kutlu.‎

‎New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). In English. 400 p., color and b/w ills. "Amasya has traces in Dogantepe Höyük that go as far back as to the latter period of the Late Neolithic Age and, as Sevket Dönmez notes in his article, "Amasya is one of the rare Anatolian cities to have kept its name (Amasea, Amaseia, Amasseia, Amaseia Hadriane, Amaseia Severiane Antoniane, Amaseia Severeia Alexandreia) almost intact from time immemorial. Amasya is on the Yesilirmak River that in Hittite texts is named 'Kummeshmaha' and in the classical era was called 'Iris'. The Yesilirmak flows from west to east along the long narrow channel it carves in the limestone and travertine rocks. Towering immediately north of the river is Mount Harsena where the city's castle is built." It is a common belief that the love of Ferhat and Sirin found a home in Amasya. In his article Sevket Dönmez remarks that, "the Anatolian version of the epic love story of Princess Sirin and Ferhad - Sirin being the sister of Queen Mahmene Banu, Azerbaijan's ruler of the city of Erzen; Ferhad being the region's famous craftsman- is set in Amasya where it has left a mark on the town's historical topography and archaeology. The two simple graves side by side on Mount Ferhad today have been attributed to Ferhad and Sirin, illustrating how contemporary and popular the story is." Amasya, Maid of the Mountains, is about the cultural heritage of a city that has been the cradle rich in popular culture and belief systems. Sevket Dönmez looks at the city as an antique settlement and portrays Pontic Cappadocia in his article about Oluz Höyük. E. Emine Naza Dönmez emphasizes the importance of Harsena Castle and Kizlar Sarayi for the city and she also focuses on the architecture in the Turkish Period. Muzaffer Doganbas describes the woodcraft in the region, and also the belief systems and sacred buildings. I. Hakki Göztas scrutinizes the historical development of the city and its secular architecture. The photographers Ali Konyali and Tarkan Kutlu held a mirror to the city of Amasya in this monograph prepared by Filiz Özdem.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). English Edition. 527 p., color ills. Pride and privilege. A history of Ottoman orders, medals and decorations. From the very end of the eighteenth century to the collapse of their Empire after World War I, the Ottomans "discovered", adapted and gradually put to extensive use western forms of honors: orders, medals and decorations. From the aigrette bestowed on Admiral Nelson in 1798 to the "Iron Crescent" of a doomed war, this work retraces the complex and fascinating history of Ottoman decorations, with a particular emphasis on their historical significance, symbolism and meaning. Illustrated with real-size reproductions of each of the items discussed, it constitutes a serious attempt to merge historical analysis with a detailed phaleristic approach. Muhacirnâme: Poetry's voice for the Karamanlidhes refugees.= Muhacirnâme: Karamanli muhacirler için siirin sevdasi. Prep. by Aytek Soner Alpan, Evangelia Balta. A bilingual edition with 25 sketches by Semih Poroy. In the midst of the daily toil for food and shelter, the struggle for survival and their daily bread, in indescribably harsh conditions, the Turkish-speaking Anatolian refugees penned poetry whose inner depths portray it all. The death of loved ones during the flight from their native lands, tuberculosis, typhoid and malaria that wiped out many people sheltering in the swamplands, the hunger, the search for shelter, land and a day's wages; the inability of the ill-prepared Greek state to deal with such misery, the political conflicts and passions they observe in bewilderment, ignorant of politicized life; the savage exploitation of the poor and the persecuted by the wealthy opportunist, the daily confrontations and the fierce clashes with the natives over the sharing of the paltry resources, the scurrilous attacks, the local community's suspicion and scornful behaviour towards the refugee, made manifold in the case of the Turkish-speaking refugee. The collection and publication of these unknown Karamanlidika verses on refugeeism is first and foremost a tribute to their memory.‎

‎Constantinople and the orientalists.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English. 331 p., b/w and color ills. Constantinople and the orientalists. Since the publication of our earlier study; 'Orientalism and Turkey', we have been exploring the ramifications of Orientalism in the Ottoman capital of Istanbul itself, or as it was generally known in the nineteenth and early twentieth century: Constantinople. The present study, documented by both visual and written records, including memories, reveals not only the ways in which Istanbul was perceived and portrayed by European artists in the nineteenth century, but it also tries to represent the contemporary city as it truly lived and breathed. In the present work, the reader will discover the identity of Western artists whose works pictorially limned the Ottoman capital, their favorite subjects ¿the harem, the bath, the coffeehouse, and the slave market- and the nature of their interpretation of these subjects.‎

‎The life and works of Tâcî-zâde Ca'fer Çelebi, with a critical edition of his dîvân.‎

‎Fine English Paperback. Large roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In English. [cxxxv], 523 p. Tâcî-zâde Ca'fer Çelebi (856? / 1452 - 921 / 1515) was a prominent figure in the polittical life of Ottoman society in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, who both as a member of the Council of State and as a personality of distinction in the literary activities of the period was able to influence future developments in these spheres. However, apart from a few articles in qorks of an encyclopaedic nature, most of which have remained unpublished. What judgements have been expressed on his position in Ottoman poetical literature have, consequently, been based on only the most superficial acquaintance with his writings and have little validity. The present thesis collects all the existing information on his life and his career, and presents for the first time a reliable biography, seeking as well, by a study of all his works, to establish his his position in the literary environment of the age. In the second part there is given in transcription a critical edition of his Divân, for which all the existing manuscripts of the work have been used. The aim here has been to achieve a correct text which may be used with confidence by the students of this period of Ottoman literature.‎

The most Important of these are the colourful and skillfully-crafted "Haleplibahçe Mosaics". These are the first examples in the world of mosaics depicting Amazon warrior queens. This image, the technical and artistic elements of mosaics, and the fact that they were crafted using 4mm2 stones from the river Euphrates, have made them one of the world's most treasured mosaics.‎
