Quevedo 1859 - 1935 had a varied career -- teacher journalist politician diplomat -- but during a period of "expatriation" in Paris 1885 - 95 he became a medical doctor specializing in psychiatry. When he returned to Mexico though he practiced his new profession he was known to be reclusive. He wrote several books of Mexican history and half a dozen novels of which La Camada is most well-known. He describes it as "psicologia social." Much of the action of the novel occurs in a large general hospital in Mexico City. An interesting seldom-seen novel from the last days of Porfirian Mexico. Although the title says the history is of food in Mexico City it really is a culinary history of Mexico with an emphasis on the capital. Originally published in 1967 it has become justly famous and was the last work of this fine stylist who was also the official historian of the city as well as a general man of letters.
