Lord FitzHardinge [Maurice Frederick FitzHardinge Berkeley] (1788-1867), Royal Navy admiral, and Whig Member of Parliament [Will
Lord FitzHardinge admiral and Member of Parliament. Autograph Letter Signed to W. G. Romaine of the Admiralty with regard to a petition brought by the shipbuilder John Clare.
17 January no year on paper watermarked ‘JOYNSON 1860’; on Berkeley Castle letterhead. See the two men’s entries in the Oxford DNB. For the context see the 1863 pamphlet ‘Clare versus the Queen’ in the slug to which John Clare 1820-1885 is described as ‘THE KING OF METAL SHIP BUILDERS’. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with folds. Docketed ‘Fitzhardinge / Lord -’. Signed ‘Fitzhardinge’ sic. In a difficult hand. Begins: ‘My Dear Romaine / I have to appear as a Witness on behalf of the Admiralty in the case of “Clare’s Petition of Right to the Queen†in which I am suitor.’ He denies the claim that he has ‘infringed Patents’ with regard to ‘Gun Boats’ ‘and I do not even remember having ever seen the Man or any body on his behalf’. He asks Romaine to help him refresh his memory with regard to communications ‘in which my name appears either at White Hall or Somerset House’: ‘at present I am prepared to swear total ignorance of the Man and his Gun Boats’. He ends by giving an address to which Romaine should write if ‘any thing can be traced to me’. 17 January [no year, on paper watermarked ‘JOYNSON | 1860’]; on Berkeley Castle letterhead. unknown

Lord Hankey [Maurice Pascal Alers Hankey, 1st Baron Hankey] (1877-1963), British civil servant, Secretary of Lloyd George's War
Lord Hankey Maurice Hankey 1st Baron Hankey Secretary of Lloyd George’s War Cabinet. Typed Letter Signed ‘Hankey’ to T. Lloyd Humberstone regarding a book he is working on and pressure to ‘cut out all reference to my diary’.
11 June 1954. On letterhead of Highstead Limpsfield Surrey. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Thomas Lloyd Humberstone 1876-1957 was a prominent member of the Convocation of the University of London. The work referred to in this letter is probably Hankey's 'The Supreme Command' the two volumes of which would be published in 1961. 1p 4to. In fair condition lightly aged. Folded three times. He is returning his letter and ‘its interesting enclosure’. Not having had any experience of the Central Office of Information he is left with the impression ‘that they are not very well informed on questions of Military Organisation’. What Humberstone says about his book ‘is an encouragement but it is not much use my making the attempt under the present regime’. He refuses to ‘cut out all reference to my diary which they wished for General Smuts who with Lord Lothian and with the strong approval of Lloyd George was the instigator of my efforts gave me the strongest advice to reject this suggestion’. He has no doubt ‘the book will be published one day’ and would like to ‘carry it on to the period between the wars and World War II on which I have done some work’. 11 June 1954. On letterhead of Highstead, Limpsfield, Surrey. unknown

A B C Alphabet des petits possions et des gros
Lyon: Les editions J. Barbe 1944. First Edition. Staplebound. Near fine. Tall quarto unpaginated 12pp. illustrated. A fresh clean copy in the publisher's printed wraps. Housed in a tissue dust jacket which appears to be contemporary buthough we are unsure if it is original. There are neat clear tape mends applied to the inner flaps of the jacket to keep it securely on the book. A very near fine example with a single marginal chip to one leaf not approaching any text. A wonderfully stylized French alphabet book geared towards young children with a number of anthropomorphized fish as the illustrations. Scarce in commerce particularly in this condition. Produced during wartime and made from cheap materials this is a beautifully preserved example. OCLC records just half a dozen physical holdings mostly at major institutions and the only on in France is at the BNF. (Les editions J. Barbe unknown

The Genius of Lothar Meggendorfer
Intervisual Communications Inc. Hardcover. Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. A tribute to the artistry of Lothar Meggendorfer this book reproduces seven of his late 19th century moving picture book designs along side accompanying poems in addition to another moving picture within the cover. Condition wise this book is in good condition. The cover of the book is well kept with no major denting and only some faint marks. The pages within are also bright with some marks most being from the mechanical pegs denting the opposite page or from minor colour transference. Each moving picture has been tested and is still functional if a little stiff for a few of them. There is a minor tear to the base of the pull tab for the first moving picture of the book but rest are untorn. The book also comes with its original slipcase which is more worn but still in good condition with some marks knocks and faint indented writing on the back. Intervisual Communications Inc hardcover

Le Mariage de Loti
Paris: Librairie Lemercier 1927. Limited Edition. First Edition thus. Three Quarter Morocco. Wooden boards. Fine. No. 54 of 255 copies in limitation on velin pur fil Lafuma. Beautiful 3/4 morocco binding with unusual wood or wood veneer boards and matching wood veneer endpapers. And leather painted "onlay" illustration mounted onto spine! 4to. 28 by 22 cm. 208 pp. with 18 color plates and twelve vignettes and a second suite of all the illustrations in just outline form bound in at the end along with the spine to the wraps. The wrap cover serves as one of the three title pages. In its original title "Raharu" this is the novel that put Loti on the map in 1880 and it served as the inspiration for Leo Delibes' once popular opera "Lakmé" which premiered just three years later. Essentially Loti was the authorial counterpart to Gauguin in plunging whole into Tahitian society and his pen-name "Loti" followed from this novel. Without question one of Loti's greatest strengths as a writer was the color he brought to his descriptions and exotic subject matter and these pochoirs most definitely honor and capture that mastery. The bright plates and vignettes could be mistaken for actual painting and they are a feast to the eye. Apparently scarce with the only copy we could locate at the BNF -- no copies of this edition were found at all on OCLC or in commerce. Light rubbing of front joint. Librairie Lemercier unknown
