Hamish Hamilton 1963 FIRST EDITION a couple of very faint spots at either end of text pp. 282 crown 8vo original terracotta boards backstrip lettered in gilt lean to spine edges and endpapers faintly spotted CHarles Mozley dustjacket faintly spotted and a little rubbed with very shallow chipping at extremities very good</p><p>Inscribed by the author on the flyleaf: For Harold & Mary with warm good wishes Maurice Edelman 1963'.</p><p>The recipients were Harold Wilson and his wife she a poet; Wilson at this point was leader of the Labour Party for which Edelman was the MP for Coventry.</p><p>The novel takes place against the background of the Algerian War drawing on Edelman's intimate knowledge of the region; the juxtaposition of a 'tender love story' with which is reflected in the contrasting Mozley designs to the dustjacket's front and rear panels.</p> hardcover

A first edition copy of this novel from British Labour Party politician journalist and novelist Maurice Edelman with the original dust wrapper designed by Mervyn Peake. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding with the original unclipped dust wrapper designed by Mervyn Peake. Maurice Edelman 1911-1975 was a British Labour Party politician journalist and novelist who represented Coventry constituencies for over 30 years. In this novel Edelman explores the conflict between the public persona of a young Minister and his true personality interwoven with political intrigue ambition and frustration. In the publisher's original cloth binding with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally cloth is in excellent condition. Spine is slightly cocked. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Dust wrapper is generally smart and bright with light chipping to the head of the backstrip and to the folds. Scattering of spots to the flyleaves. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature and date in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with the numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on the verso pale marginal foxing. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Epoque. Each delivery of four prints was printed in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft together is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. French collectors' interest in artistic posters intensified at the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"" poster mania. The poster originally popular and posted in the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral medium became precious and devoted to preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising purpose and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the deluxe illustrated book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy in the Belle époque style.
