L’explication précise que le dessinateur a choisi de représenter, non pas le début d’une partie, mais une partie en cours. Certains éléments sont donc déjà « soufflés » (in explication). La partie touche à sa fin : il ne reste plus au juste-milieu que ses deux tours (Soult et d’Argout), son fou (Thiers) et un de ses pions, « représentant une très petite partie de la force civique, la partie adorant quand même, la partie incurablement cataracteuse, la partie Tamerlan » (in explication). Restent également Barthe dans sa tour portant le motif de la balance de la justice, et Persil dans une tour portant le motif de la hache. Dans le camp de la liberté, les figures restantes sont plus nombreuses : les fous sont représentés par le « Charivari » et la « Caricature », les cavaliers par le « NATIO // NAL [NATIONAL] » et la « TRIBU // NE [TRIBUNE] ». Le roi est incarné par le coq gaulois, fier et flamboyant. Enfin, les pions dans le camp de la liberté sont « les hommes de juillet » (in explication) portant le bonnet phrygien, et les tours contiennent une foule de patriotes républicains et représentent la « Societé [Société] // des amis // du Peuple » et la « Societé [Société] // des droits // de l’homme ». Le dénouement de la partie se joue sur l’échec et mat effectué par la figure de la liberté (femme habillée à l’antique, portant un bonnet phrygien et une torche allumée), en acculant dans un coin la figure du roi Louis-Philippe, vu de dos, à gche au premier plan. Without date and place but after 1943. 7pp. 4to. On three bifoliums and two single leaves of watermarked laid paper all loose with the bifoliums placed inside one another and the single leaves inserted after the title. Very good on lightly-aged paper. Written out in black ink with the titles in red ink in an excellent uncial hand. The five translations are 'My Own my Native Land' and 'The Family Dinner-Party' both by Bowra; 'This World is all a Fleeting Show' and 'This defileth a Man' both by Murray; and 'Whom the Gods love' by Byron. 'From the Greek' Higham and Bowra's abridgement of their 'Oxford Book of Greek Verse in Translation' was published in 1943. See Image trimmed a little by scanner.
