London: John Lane the Bodley Head 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo 140pp. A very good copy in the publisher's green cloth stamped in dark green. Mild dust-soiling and rubbing to extremities and the front inner hinge thinly cracked but holding; still a sound clean example. A wonderful copy with a very significant autograph letter from Hewlett to British publisher Charles Elkin Mathews laid-in formerly tipped onto the front free endpaper with small paper remnants on that leaf matching the corner remnants missing from the letter itself. The letter reads in full: "17 Feb. 96: Dear Sir I have got my Pastoral interlude--Pan and the Young Shepherd--ready now and mean to get it published this year. I don't know whether I told you about it when I saw you the other day but anyhow I am inclined to offer it to you first for many reasons. I call it an Interlude because tho' dramatic in form it is hardly a real comedy. I am really sure it's a decent thing: mostly in prose with some songs & things interwoven. Do you care to see it It's not long. Yours very truly Maurice Hewlett. addresed to: Elkin Mathews Esq. P. S. This 'Pan' is half a fairy story and half an English pastoral. It is very open-airish." The letter turned out to be consequential as Elkin Mathews' firm indeed ended up publishing this book. Hewlett's letter was well-timed as the firm was likely raking in profits from its highly successful literary and aesthetic periodical "The Yellow Book" which had been running for about two years at the time of the letter. Hewlett's letters are not unobtainably rare but this is the finest we've encountered with significant literary content. Please note that the book itself is not signed.
