Un des 100 exemplaires numérotés sur alfa (n° 67), seul grand papier. Le troisième chapitre, "L'épuration en 1816", a créé une polémique : Bardèche y établit un parallèle entre la situation de Stendhal, qui a été entraîné dans la chute de Napoléon et qui a quitté la France pour l'Italie en 1814, et celle des écrivains collaborateurs au moment de l'épuration à la Libération de 1944. Le présent exemplaire est justement enrichi d'une recension d'Émile Henriot, "Nouveaux stendhaliens" (Le Monde, "La vie littéraire", 14 mars 1947), montée sur onglet en tête de volume : l'article soutient l'appropriation de Stendhal par Bardèche. L'écrivain communiste André Rousseaux s'indignera, à l'inverse, de cette récupération d'extrême droite : "M. An ideal socialism yes but I mean I agree with H.G. Wells in his view that if the 'Minority Report' people had their way we should be guarded like prisoners by wardens. I distrust the people who 'run' the poor. I agree still less with your religion. I am a catholic; but I have been an agnostic . Ouch. Nor was she accounted much of a beauty by her contemporaries though both Baring and Hillaire Belloc thought her lovely. Her gift was that of sympathy; she was a good listener."
