‎3 contemporary editions: Ma mère l'oye Le Tombeau de Couperin and Valses nobles‎

Original publisher's ivory wrappers with titling printed in red and green. 1f. recto printed in light olive green verso blank 18 pp. First Edition later issue. Orenstein 229. Marnat 756. Ravel's original version for piano four-hands premiered in Paris at a concert of the Société musicale independante Salle Gaveau on 20 April 1910 with Jeanne Leleu and Geneviève Durony The orchestrated ballet version premiered in Paris on 28 January 1912 at the Théâtre des Arts. "Ravel drew on the past in Ma mère l'oye which is based on stories by Charles Perrault 1628-1703 the Comtesse d'Aulnoy c1650-1705 and Marie Leprince de Beaumont 1711-80 and Chansons madécasses a setting of poems by Evariste-Désiré de Parny 1753-1814 . The simplicity of Ma mère l'oye was a studied evocation of childhood; the influence of Satie's Gymnopédies on the 'Pavane de la belle au bois dormant' and 'Les entretiens de la belle et de la bête' is striking both for its melodic naivety and its repetitive bass movement." Barbara L. Kelly in Grove Music Online

- Le Tombeau de Couperin Prélude - Forlane - Menuet - Rigaudon Suite d'Orchestre. Paris: Durand & Cie PN D. & F. 9810 after 1919. Arranged for piano 4-hands by Lucien Garban 1877-1959. Original publisher's dark green wrappers. 1f. recto title verso blank 31 pp. Orenstein 234. Marnat 763. Premiered in Paris at a concert of the Société musicale indépendantem Salle Gaveau on 11 April 1919 with Marguerite Long. Le Tombeau de Couperin was conceived amid the turmoil of the first world war. "In 1917 Ravel received a temporary discharge from military duty . In this restful setting he completed Le Tombeau de Couperin much of which had been written in 1914. Each of the piano suite's six pieces was dedicated to the memory of a fallen comrade in arms. The 'Rigaudon' for example was dedicated to the composer's childhood friends Pierre adn Pascal Gaudin the 'Prélude' to Lieutenant Jacques Carlot a cousin of Jacques Durand who had transcribed several of Ravel's works and the 'Toccata' to Captain Joseph de Marliave the husban of Marguerite Long." Orenstein: Ravel p. 75.

- Valses nobles & sentimentales. Paris: Durand & Cie PN D. & F. 8247 1911. Ex libris American composer and music publisher Ray Green 1908-1997 with his handstamp to outer corner of upper wrapper. Premiered in Paris at a concert of the Société musicale indépendante Salle Gaveau on 9 May 1911 by Louis Auber. "In the Valses nobles et sentimentales Ravel creates a powerful tension between the Romantic idiom and classical restraint; he selfconsciously claimed that he was aiming for 'a style that is simpler and clearer in which the harmony is harder and the lines of the music are made to show up." ‎L'Heure Espagnole Comédie Musicale en Un Acte Poème de Franc-Nohain. Partition pour Chant et Piano Transcrite par l'Auteur. Piano-vocal score‎

‎Paris: A. Durand & Fils PN D. & F. 7073 1908. Small folio. Half mid-tan calf with marbled boards original publisher's wrappers printed in black and red bound in. 1f. blank 1f. title printed in red and black 1f. printed dedication "À Madame Jean Cruppi Hommage de respectueuse amitié Maurice Ravel" 1f. cast list i index ii performance notes 114 pp.

With an autograph inscription signed by Ravel to dedication leaf: "et à G - Jean - Aubry en moins respectueuse amitié Maurice Ravel."

Wrappers browned and very slightly defective. Slightly worn and browned; small tear to head of dedication repaired; small publisher's monogramatic handstamp to lower edge of verso of last page; contemporary newspaper clippings to recto of blank leaf preceding title with synopsis and review of the work by Gabriel Fauré. First Edition. Orenstein: Ravel Man and Musician p. 228.

L'Heure Espagnole was first performed in Paris at the Opéra Comique on May 19 1911 to a libretto closely based on the play by Franc-Nohain.

Madame Jean Cruppi the dedicatee convinced the director of the Opéra-Comique Albert Carré to stage the work in spite of its risqué story line. "In a letter of 17 May 1911 two days before the première Ravel wrote: 'What I've tried to do is fairly ambitious: to breathe new life into the Italian opera buffa: following only the principle . the French language like any other has its own accents and inflections of pitch.' At the same time he referred to Musorgsky's Zhenit'ba 'The Marriage' as the work's only real ancestor. It also forms part of a larger group of Spanish works that spanned Ravel's whole career and the necessary Spanish colouring provided him with a reason for a virtuoso use of the modern orchestra which he felt was 'perfectly designed for underlining and exaggerating comic effects'." Roger Nichols in Grove Music Online. Indeed composer-writer Reynaldo Hahn somewhat critically referred to Ravel's technique as "a sort of transcendent jujitsu."

Noted music critic Georges Jean-Aubry 1882-1949 "belonged to a circle of avant-garde musicians and littérateurs and was a frequent contributor to periodicals. Encouraged by his 20-year friendship with Debussy he wrote enthusiastically in support of contemporary French composers noting similarities between their music and that of the 18th century Couperin Rameau. He wrote perceptively in praise of Spanish composers Falla Granados Albéniz but rejected German Romanticism as expressed in the works of Wagner and Strauss." Grove Music Online. A. ‎ORIGINAL BOOK COVER ART for "Ancestors of Bantan " by Maurice B. Gardner‎

‎Brooklyn NY : Theo. Gaus' Sons 1976. First Edition. Very Good. David Prosser. David Prosser. First Edition. We are pleased to offer the original artwork for the front cover of the book "Ancestors of Bantan" by Maurice B. Gardner. The artist is David Prosser signed "Prosser '75" lower left. Offered here with the original black and white format. for publication the title and surrounding portions of the cover image and artist name were colored red. Artist reworks etc are clear to the naked eye.

Dimensions of the frame are 17 3/4 inches wide by 25 inches high with the original art extending almost to the margins. Not examined out of frame but in nice condition with a few spots observed. The related Bantan book was published by Theo. Gaus' Sons Brooklyn NY in 1976. On the dust jacket flap the author Maurice B. Gardner noted that three of the segments in this novel were from his previous work Bantan Incredible from 1960.

Gardner was a Maine author and some of his correspondence and books can be found in the Maine State Library. Prosser was an illustrator for various books including Dragons and Nightmares by Robert Bloch 1968 and "Is The Devil A Gentleman" by Seabury Quinn 1970 both from Mirage Press. While interior artwork is more often seen in the marketplace the front cover artwork is much rarer and commands a premium because it was what sold the book. Very "Tarzan like in feel an interesting and action-filled image. As often the case with original book illustration the actual artwork is much larger than the published image. In this case it makes for an action-filled ready to hang image.

We have included an image of the book as it was published but the book is NOT included - just the original artwork. [ Theo. ‎AND THE NAKUNIN WERE GONE‎

‎N.p. but possibly Providence R.I. 1960. Two volumes. 2iv1542 leaves; 543-1053 leaves typescript on onion paper. Plus two maps one folding. Folio. Red buckram front board and spines gilt. Binder's tickets Model Bookbinding Houston Texas on rear pastedown of both volumes. Photocopy of newspaper article laid in. Occasional manuscript corrections in pen throughout. Some shelf wear but overall very good. Inscribed by the authors on the front pastedown. This is a potentially unique typescript of a historical novel about early 20th-century China leading up to the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949. "Nakunin" is a term in Shanghainese or Hu the dialect of Chinese spoken in Shanghai and the surrounding region for "foreigner" in particular connoting a foreigner who could never truly become a local. The novel is a bit of an adventure story frequently hinting at racier activities behind closed doors. Perhaps semi-autobiographical the main characters travel across China India and Indochina evading capture and corrupt officials in hopes of reaching freedom.

Ruby and Maurice Baumgarten might well have known of what they wrote thanks to their "exciting background.that has all the ingredients of an action-packed Hollywood scenario" JEWISH HERALD. Though French Maurice was raised by his archaeologist parents traveling throughout the Near and Middle East; he served in the French Army in Indochina and started an import-export business in Shanghai. He was in Calcutta at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor and never returned to Shanghai transferring his business to Calcutta. Soon after he met Ruby née Bonner and in 1949 they decided to move to Providence R.I. to start a tea importing business and shop. This copy is inscribed to Dr. Leonard Robbins possibly the same Dr. Robbins who was president of the school board in Houston and led the majority decision to desegregate public schools there in 1970. Nevertheless this book and its authors remain a bit of a mystery. We could find no listing of this book in OCLC or at auction and no further information about the authors aside from an article in THE JEWISH HERALD and a listing for them in POLK'S PROVIDENCE CITY DIRECTORY for 1949. ‎No. 3. JOURNAL DES ASSEMBLÉES-COLONIALE ADMINISTRATIVE ET DU DIRECTOIRE DE L'ISLE DE FRANCE. DU 22 BRUMAIRE AN 5e. DU 12 NOVEMBRE 1796 VIEUX STYLE caption title‎

‎Port Nord-Ouest: Chez F.N. Bolle 1796. 4pp. Small quarto. Single folded sheet. Contemporary manuscript notations. Light soiling and wear. Very good. Early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius also known as the Ile de France. The text contains the deliberations and acts of the colonial assembly of the island at a time when it was operating virtually independent from France. The acts all concern measures to be taken for the defense of the island at a time when British invasion was feared.

The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France" and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810 and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea rice and other produce.

Printing began on Mauritius in 1768. During the French period until 1810 only about 400 imprints were produced mostly in the form of official documents and newspapers though there are also almanacs and a few other items. All are quite rare. No copies located in OCLC and not recorded by Toussaint in his bibliography of Mauritius imprints. Chez F.N. Bolle unknown books‎

Issued at a critical moment at the beginning of the French Revolution the lengthy text concerns the government and judiciary of the island together with a proclamation by the King dated Aug. 24 1790. The text nominally recognizes the authority of the King while taking measures to establish major autonomy of local government.

During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base. The British took charge of the island in 1810 and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea rice and other produce.

Printing began on Mauritius in 1768. During the French period until 1810 only about 400 imprints were produced mostly in the form of official documents and newspapers although there are also almanacs and a few other items. All are quite rare. No copies located in OCLC and not recorded by Toussaint in his bibliography of Mauritius imprints. Chez F.N. Bolle unknown books‎

An early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius also known as the Ile de France. The text comprises a poem in eleven stanzas by an anonymous soldier from the Regiment of the Isle de France who retired to the island of Bourbon. As most early imprints from Mauritius are official documents this piece a work of local literature is particularly interesting and desirable.

The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island taking possession in 1598. ‎Tobago: Magnitot Louis Maurice Le Rat de‎

‎MEMOIRE SUR LA COLONIE DE TOBAGO. EN 1803. AN XI manuscript title‎

‎N.p. but probably Tobago 1803. 68pp. plus two folding manuscript plans. Approximately 14500 words. Folio. Folded sheets stitched together. Stitching loose some sheets loosely laid in. Spine chipped. Titlepage lightly soiled some small chips and tears around the edges. Some light soiling and dampstaining to outer leaves else clean and bright. Written on the right half of each page with some additional notes or corrections on the left. Near fine. An important document in French detailing the functions of the island of Tobago written by Louis-Maurice Le Rat De Magnitot 1757-1823 colonial prefect of Tobago and Saint Domingue. Tobago changed hands many times during the 18th century and the island was briefly in French possession again in 1802-03 before being captured by the British in June of 1803. In this document Magnitot summarizes the situation of the newly reclaimed island. The first four sections of his MEMOIRE deal with military matters. In the first section "Troupes" he lists seventy-seven men garrisoned on Tobago noting that the garrison is a varied blend of men. He includes details on discipline causes of sickness and mortality among the men and uniforms. The second section "Artillerie" provides details of the number of guns and munitions at Tobago. The third section "Fortifications" includes two plans of Man of War Bay complete with soundings observations and important locations marked. This is followed by a section entitled "Marine" in which he details the condition of the ports and harbors. In the next four sections Magnitot gives details about the civil operations of the island: Laws Police Agriculture and Commerce. The section on the law is very detailed giving the organization of the courts civil and criminal. The section on police is perhaps the most interesting in which he gives not only information on keeping the public peace but on the public itself. Magnitot delineates in several separate points policing among the black populace the conduct of masters toward slaves and the condition of roads and the means of their maintenance. In the last of these points he gives numbers on both the European and colored populace. The "population blanche" numbers no more than 600 while the "population noire" at the time of the assessment numbers 17485. Breakdowns within each group are also given dividing rural from urban and free from slave.

In the seventh section "Agriculture" Magnitot declares Tobago's agriculture to be flourishing. He lays out the reasons for that success before going into specific crop information detailing production of coffee cotton rum and sugar. The final section "Commerce" is the most extensive. It lays out details of Tobago's trade with France and reasons for variation on the flow of commerce as well as discussing the cost of national trade versus trade with other nations. Clearly the French administrators hoped Tobago would become a productive colony but Napoleon's entire American strategy collapsed in 1803 with the loss of Saint Domingue to the freed slaves the sale of Louisiana and the choking off of Caribbean commerce by the Royal Navy.

First colonized by the Dutch in the early 17th century over the next two hundred years Tobago changed hands thirty-three times among the Spanish Dutch English and French all of them rival colonists. In 1763 Tobago was ceded to Britain captured by the French in 1781 and then recaptured by the British in 1793. In 1802 Trinidad was ceded to the British through the Treaty of Amiens and Tobago returned to the French. Britain re- captured it in 1803 when the peace broke and the Napoleonic Wars resumed. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1814 Britain gained formal possession of Tobago with the Treaty of Paris.

A fascinating and detailed document illuminating this last brief period of French rule on the island of Tobago a small part of Napoleon's strategy to build a French empire in America. unknown books‎

‎N.p. but almost certainly Mauritius 1800. Engraving 5 x 4 inches. Light soiling. A few contemporary ink notations on verso. Very good. Engraved portrait of Governor Anne Joseph Hippolyte de Maurès Comte de Malartic governor of the island of Mauritius. The portrait is a line-drawing done in profile and framed in an oval. Flags flank either side of the oval frame and it is captioned beneath. There is some light wear to the tiny imprint information causing it to be slightly obscured but it is possible that the illustrator's name is "Girouai" and the engraver may be "Noiret." The engraving is a bit crude and printed on laid paper. It is likely that it was done shortly after Malartic's death in 1800. A most unusual and exotic image a tribute to the rich culture of printing that flourished on the remote island in the south Indian Ocean. unknown books‎
