Anthony and includes a wide range of historical characters among them Daniel Webster Anthony Comstock Ulysses S. Grant and Lillian Russell. This is No. 47 of 55 copies of which only 50 were for sale which were "printed on special paper cloth bound and numbered . and are signed on the limitation page by Virgil Thomson." The regular trade edition was 1000 copies in wrappers. Included but transferred from another copy of the book are the three original portrait photographs by Carl Van Vechten which were originally issued with each of the numbered copies. Each photograph is approx. 5x7 inches and is mounted on a 9x12 piece of thin textured card stock; each has a printed label on the verso bearing Van Vechten's original signature. The three photographs contained in their original envelope are: Gertrude Stein; Virgil Thomson; and Dorothy Dow as Susan B. Anthony and William Horne as Jo the Loiterer as they appeared in the original production. NOTE that the original photo of Stein in profile is different from the shot of Stein in front of an American flag that's reproduced as part of a dual frontispiece in the book itself; the two portraits of Thomson are identical. Hardcover. book is lightly worn with a touch of dust-soiling and faint spotting on the top edge of the text block; the jacket alas is badly compromised due to a large chunk having been torn away from the top left corner of the front panel taking with it about half of the title. "Body horror" novel about the psychological havoc wrought upon a famous pianist when his hands mangled in an accident are surgically replaced by those of a recently-executed murderer. Originally published in France in 1920 the novel was first filmed as a 1924 silent in Austria directed by Robert Wiene of "Caligari" fame; subsequent movie versions acknowledging the source novel were MAD LOVE 1935 starring Colin Clive and Peter Lorre and THE HANDS OF ORLAC 1960 with Mel Ferrer and Christopher Lee. It was also unofficially remade without source attribution as HANDS OF A STRANGER 1962 and is often acknowledged as an inspiration for the 1946 thriller THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS. Rare in the dust jacket this example of which apart from the noted large missing piece is virtually unworn and is a great candidate for professional restoration. Alternatively one could take the much less expensive approach of obtaining a beautiful facsimile of the original jacket from the well-known purveyor of such things; details upon request. . E.P. Paris: Henri Laurens Editeur 1912. First edition of Maurice Denis's iconic modernist coloring book Premiers Paysages First Landscapes. A founding member of the group of French painters known as Les Nabis Denis was invited by editor Henri Laurens to contribute to a popular children's art series Les Leçons de Choses du Petit Coloriste. In response during the summer of 1911 Denis produced a series of dreamlike French landscapes. "Petits coloristes" can lose themselves in painting scenes of villages and mountains countryside and seashore with captions by Denis that provide a wry running commentary on his creative process: "Ce n'est pas difficile de faire des maisons quand on ne fait pas toutes les fenêtres." Denis even reminds his young readers to keep their paints separate and their brushes clean. The quality of these vibrant landscapes which exemplify Denis's famous definition of painting as "a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order" was immediately recognized. In 1912 the bibliophilic society "Les XX" commissioned a deluxe edition of twenty signed copies featuring an extra plate and multiple impressions of each image. This first edition of Premiers Paysages while less lavishly produced reflects the book's original identity as an inexpensive ephemeral activity book: surviving examples are typically found with plates colored by early owners. From the stock of legendary book scout Martin Stone 1946-2016 with his penciled note: "of the utmost rarity." We locate copies of this trade issue at BNF Getty Yale and the Smithsonian: this copy like the Yale copy is staple-bound. A near-fine unused example. Side-stapled volume measuring 10.5 x 8.5 inches: 16. Original color pictorial paper boards. Seven color plates and seven matching uncolored plates with two additional uncolored plates reproducing the color images printed on the boards. Lightest general foxing and toning. Plus approximately 65 pages of manuscript notes in French with calculations. <br/><br/>The majority of the manuscript pages appear to deal with quadratic forms in Leonard Dickson's - Studies in the theory of numbers. 1930 which contains numerous original investigations in the theory of quadratic forms in three or four variables. In Dickson's earlier work on the History of the Theory of Numbers 1919-23 he provided little interpretation and made no attempt to contextualize the results being described. It is probably with this background that Kraitchik devoted much of the manuscript sheets to Dickson's work. Other manuscript notes dealing with other equations from Euler "Continuous la table" dated March to December 1939. The last group of manuscript pages in 8vo deal with equations from a publication of Landarsic Backman dated November 1931 and May 1938. There are a few loose sheets with calculations but no identification. These may be sheets used to make rough calculations. Together this manuscript collection and off prints offer a very good example of Kraitchik's thinking in regards the theory of numbers. Although Kraitchik is often thought of in relation to Recreational Mathematics he really spent considerable time with the Theory of Numbers. The present collection of 3 off prints and manuscript sheets most of which are on square lined sheets is thus quite rare and significant for this noted 20th century mathematician. paperback books
