Entitled "Pictures by Maurice Sendak" the set includes original prints of images from the author's books here printed on single sheets rather than on two-page spreads. This particular image shows the book's protagonist Jennie a Streayham terrier seated at the table with a glass. A child is sitting on the floor. This illustration is characteristic of Sendak's beloved style using visible pen marks to create a variety of textures depicting characters anthropomorphically and conveying the mood of the scene through dramatic expressions. In the introduction to the box set Sendak writes of his influences and attributes this style of illustration to Victorian artists George Pinwell and Arthur Hughes. This particular image features the text from the folk song "Go Tell Aunt Rhody" popularized in America in the mid-19th century but believed to have originated in 18th century Europe composed as a gavotte by Jean-Jacques Rousseau for his opera "Le devin du village". In this print Sendak illustrates the song in a storyboard style. It shows various characters moving from one scene to the next telling the story with a rhyme. The rhyme is both whimsical and dark characteristic of Sendak's books which were criticized by some as being controversial for children. Entitled "Pictures by Maurice Sendak" the set includes original prints of images from the author's books here printed on single sheets rather than on two-page spreads. This particular image shows Hector Protector with a lion and a snake arriving at the Queen's Room. In the story naughty Hector is sent to bring a cake to the queen despite his complaints. He arrives without the cake but with a lion and a snake he encountered on the way. Sendak's illustration playfully communicates the emotion and personalities of the scene through the queen's look of dismay and Hector's expression and pose reflecting his disobedience. This print is characteristic of Sendak's work - the vivid colors and variety of textures speak to the author's beloved style and the scene appears to be somewhat frightening for children a theme that caused controversy for Sendak throughout his career. The print is in very good condition with wide margins as issued. Entitled "Pictures by Maurice Sendak" the set includes original prints of images from the author's books here printed on single sheets rather than on two-page spreads. <br><br>This particular image shows a dream-like scene of three bakers gazing upwards at the main character a little boy named Mickey flying over a milk bottle in a small plane made of bread. The background for the scene resembles a cityscape with pantry and kitchen items portrayed as buildings and skyscrapers. The bakers closely resemble Oliver Hardy a comic actor known for his silent films. This is thought to be a reference to the 1930s a period Sendak evokes throughout the book in his style use of color and allusions to pop-culture and design. <br><br> In his introduction to this box set Sendak writes of In the Night Kitchen as "influenced not by an artistic mode of the past that I consider superior but by art that was very real and potent to a child growing up in America in the thirties and forties. Night Kitchen and to a lesser degree Wild Things reflect a popular American art both crass and oddly surrealistic an art that encompasses the Empire State Building syncopated Disney cartoons and aluminum-clad comic-book heroes an Art Moderne whose richness of detail was most sensuously catalogued in the movies." His diversion from his usual style inspired by Victorian artists and children's books is evident in his use of deeper more muted colors and the lack of cross-hatching utilized in most of his work to show depth and texture. The print is in very good condition with wide margins as issued.
