From Wagner-Camp "Morris's entertaining journal takes the reader from Saint Louis to the Colorado Rockies in the summer of 1863." He intended to go to the Montana gold fields but changed to Denver and the Colorado gold fields due to a breakdown in the steamer at Saint Louis. Gold had been discovered in Montana in 1862 and was the "new gold rush" during the 1860's and 70's. The Colorado gold fields were discovered earlier in 1859 at Pike's Peak and the front range of the Rockies. Cassandre A. M. Adolphe Mouron Cassandre illustrator and designer. Typography: Maurice Frederic. Photography: Rene Message
Parfums Lucien Lelong
Paris: Agence Générale de Publicité et de PropagandePrinter: E. Desfosses. Wraps. Brochure. Near Fine. N.d. circa 1930. 8vo. 24.5 by 18.5 cm. Unpaginated 31 leaves all of a weighty card stock or over 60 pages about half with color plates we count 31 but one can quibble about whether one or two of them so qualify. Eleven of these are non-product illustrations -- attempts to capture concepts or abstractions -- the balance being exquisite depictions of the company's fine perfume bottles. The catalogue exudes an unalloyed dreamy luxury in every respects as befits high-end perfume marketing. Cassandre a name adopted by the Ukrainian-born Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron 1901-1968 -- his parents were French -- was a highly celebrated commercial artist theatrical designer magazine illustrator and poster artist. He worked heavily with the prestige printer Draeger as well as the couturier Lucien Lelong and others. In time he was awarded the French Legion of Honor. Lelong was a top Parisian couturier from the twenties til his retirement in the late forties. He was himself not a designer but rather relied on a stable of designers and among his proteges was Christian Dior. As this catalogue also shows dress designers were branching out into fragrances for a long time; this catalogue predates the creation of Chanel No. 5 by a few years. Light wear to the wraps -- a minor closed tear along the upper joint and some minor wrinkling or creasing to the cover paper. Otherwise clean and fresh.

Agence Générale de Publicité et de PropagandePrinter: E. Desfosses. paperback books

Girodias Maurice

Paris: The Olympia Press 1957. Softcover. First edition numbered and limited to 5000 copies this copy #691; 9 1/4 x 5 3/4; pp. 4 7-105 5; blue and yellow wraps printed in black and white; a few minor nicks to edges of wraps; a bit of age-toning; light wear to tips of spine; very good or better condition. Shortly after its first publication by The Olympia Press Lolita was subjected to censorship banned in France and seized by the French authorities together with 25 other works by the publishing company. Maurice Girodias founder of The Olympia Press and compiler of the current book vehemently opposed the ban and would eventually sue the Government and would win the lawsuit. Publishing the book as a solicitation for support Girodias included his own article "L'Affaire Lolita" a poem by Nabokov excerpts from Lolita letters and others. The title was a play-on-words and reference to "L'Affaire Miller" dubbed so by the French press some 20 years earlier and regarding the release of another banned book - Henry Miller's "The Tropic of Cancer" - published by Girodias' own father Jack Kahane.
