Morgann Maurice.
An Essay on Dramatic Character of Sir John Falstaff.

Morgann Maurice. An Essay on Dramatic Character of Sir John Falstaff. London: Baldwyn 1820. Second edition first published anonymously in 1777. Morgann's essay was published anonymously. Though popular and influential in his lifetime he did not allow it to be reprinted during his lifetime he also had all his private papers burned. 8vo. Original boards paper label. 189pp. Except for slight chipping at top of spine a fine copy. This important essay provides a deeper understanding to a complex Shakespearean character. Its ostensible purpose is to vindicate Falstaff's courage and character. It went much further than that: "For style intellectuality knowledge of human nature and consequent profound appreciation of Shakespeare Morgan's essay has not been surpassed" DNB. "This essay forms a more honorable monument to the memory of Shakespeare than any which has been read of him by the united labours of his commentators" Symmonds. Samuel Johnson also praised it.
