Comte Étienne-Maurice d’Argout was the father of Antoine Maurice Apollinaire d' Argout 1782-1858.Transcriptions sind auf deutsch vorhanden.Comte Étienne-Maurice d’Argout né à La Côte-Saint-André le 23 novembre 1756 décédé à Jérémie Île de Saint-Domingue le 28 juin 1798. Entré au service du roi dans le régiment de Piémont en qualité de sous-lieutenant le 1er avril 1772 sous-aide-major le 4 juillet 1775. Lors du dédoublement de son régiment il passa le 16 mai 1776 en qualité de lieutenant de chasseurs dans le régiment de Blésois devenu ensuite de Provence. Capitaine le 30 avril 1784 il servit dans ce régiment jusqu’en décembre 1791. Ensuite il est difficile de dire avec certitude ce qu’il est devenu. En effet son dossier d’officier aux Archives de la Guerre contient les trois pièces suivantes contradictoires entre elles : 1° Une lettre du 9 avril 1793 de Jean-Gaston d’ARGOUT père d’Étienne-Maurice adressée au ministre de la Guerre par laquelle le père rappelle que son fils « a dû s’embarquer à Brest avec le second bataillon de son régiment envoyé l’année dernière à Saint-Domingue. » Mais poursuit le père « vous savez citoyen ministre que dans ces circonstances les enfants suivent leurs idées sans consulter sans même avertir leurs pères. » Allusion voilée à une éventuelle émigration : le père demandait donc au ministre si son fils s’était réellement embarqué avec sa compagnie et s’il était bien à Saint-Domingue ou non. 2° Le père envoya une seconde lettre au ministre le 2 Fructidor an IV-19 août 1796 pour lui dire que son fils était encore porté en 1793 comme présent à son poste à Saint-Domingue était-ce la réponse que le ministre de la Guerre avait faite à sa demande de 1793 mais que son silence laissait craindre qu’il n’eût été tué. Or « quelques méchants auraient voulu répandre le soupçon de son émigration. » Cela éclaire les démarches du père : la rumeur publique dans l’Isère devait accuser le fils d’émigration et le père devait être menacé des sanctions draconiennes qui frappaient les parents d’émigrés. D’où l’obstination du père à vouloir établir que son fils était bien en situation régulière dans les armées de la République. 3° Or ce même dossier contient outre les deux lettres du père au ministre un troisième document émanant du fils et daté du 1er juillet 1796 : il s’agit d’une demande de croix de Saint-Louis adressée par le capitaine Étienne-Maurice d’ARGOUT à « Monsieur Frère du Roi » sic alors que la mort de Louis XVII avait été annoncée un an plus tôt et que pour les royalistes « Monsieur Frère du Roi » était depuis plus d’un an le roi Louis XVIII !. Le requérant énumérait ses services militaires jusqu’en décembre 1791 déclarait avoir alors émigré et avoir fait la campagne de 1792 dans l’armée des princes puis il avait servi comme « capitaine de cavalerie dans la Légion de MONTALEMBERT faisant la guerre à Saint-Domingue ».
