ALI IBN BASSÂM AL-SHANTARÎNÎ, (1058-1147).
Al-dhakhîrah fi mahâsin ahl al-jazîrah. [= The treasury concerning the merits of the people of Iberia]. Vol. 2. Pt. 1. Edited by Lutfî 'Abd al-Badî.
Good Arabic Paperback. 4to. (29 x 21 cm). In Arabic. 200 p. Ex-library stamps. Splits on the spine. Otherwise a good copy. Shantarînî was an Arab poet and historian from al-Andalus. He was born in Santarém (sometimes spelled Shantarin or Xantarin) and hailed from the Banu Taghlib tribe. Ibn Bassam describes how the incessant invasions of the Castilians forced him to run away from Santarém in Portugal, "the last of the cities of the west," after seeing his lands ravaged and his wealth destroyed, a ruined man with no possessions save his battered sword. Especially well known is his anthology Dhakhira fi mahasin Ahl al-Jazira. one of the most important sources of information in the field of history, literature, and culture of the Almoravid dynasty. It was edited in eight volumes by Ihsan Abbas, written in rhymed prose, many of its biographies are contemporary and filled out with details taken from the Kitab al-Matin of Ibn Hayyan. The parts taken from that book are easily distinguishable because Ibn Bassam prefixes the words qala Ibn Hayyan ("Ibn Hayyan says") and concludes the extract with intaha kalam Ibn Hayyan ("here ends ibn Hayyan's words"). The set is 8 volumes, this is only one volume (2.1).

[MAJOR] HALIT ZIYA [TÜRKKAN] (?), (Turkish cartographer, scientist, specialist of cadaster), (1886-1966).
[MANUSCRIPT HAND-COLOURED MAP OF SYRIA - PALESTINE - TRANSJORDAN] Suriye - Filistin - Transjordan.
Very Good Turkish Original manuscript color map of Middle East including Syria, Palestine and Transjordan. Signed by cartographer. 28x20 cm. In Turkish (with Latin letters). The Mapping Department, which moved to Ankara from Istanbul after the Independence War, settled in the Attar Basi Khan in Koyunpazari and the press section also started its studies in the building which is the Art School in Ulus today. In 1924, the department, which is still inside the General Directorate Garrison, moved to the hut-shaped buildings with single floor between the Military Sewinghouse and the General Directorate. On the other hand, the production of maps and plans, which were to be used in development services carried out in parallel to the revolutions starting with the declaration of the Republic and following each other, was considered to be based on a legal arrangement. Because of the necessity of an urgent legal arrangement, the bill of law concerning to the General Directorate of Mapping, whose preparations were initiated by Lieut. Gen. M. Sevki (Ölçer) who knew the importance of the subject, was sent to the Ministry of Defense at the beginning of 1925. After the approval of Ministry of Defense, the bill, which was sent to the Prime Ministry, was discussed in the Council of Ministers and presented to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. As a result; the Mapping Department was re-organized as the General Directorate of Mapping affiliated with the Ministry of Defense with the law bearing the number 657 on May 2, 1925 in order to do all mapping works and meet the needs of maps and plans of all ministries, institutions and organizations. [.] The first application of photogrammetry was made in Kayas, Ankara with the Wild Autograph plotting apparatus which was purchased in that year. Captain Ömer Kadri and Captain Niyazi came back from their photogrammetry education in Germany. Major Halit and Major Nüzhet were sent to France for photogrammetry education and Captain Ishak and Captain Bahri were sent to Germany. Captain Ahmet (Denkmen) and Captain Ömer Kadri attended the Congress of Photogrammetry assembled in Berlin. (Source: The Illustrated History Of Turkish Cartography). Halid Ziya was born in Izmir, Tire. He went to Istanbul and continued to Hendese-i Mülkiye and Engineer Mekteb-i Âlîsi for seven years. After starting with "Aydin Province Umur-i Nafia Third Class Engineering", Halid Ziya Bey, who continued to work as a deputy chief engineer on 14 March 1910, left Aydin and returned to Istanbul after continuing this duty for about six and a half months. As a teacher, he taught Accounting, Algebra, Geometry, and Topography at Halkali Ziraat Mekteb-i Âlîsi and Darussafaka. Halid Ziya Bey, who was appointed as a teacher of Hendese and Cosmography in Kabatas High School, started to practice the profession of engineering and cadastral, which was his main specialty in 1327. After the First World War, the Istanbul Government started its activities in order to capture and neutralize Halid Ziya Bey and his friends. Upon the harsh measures taken, Halid Ziya Bey had to live as a fugitive in the Hasirci Mountains of Eskisehir for a while with the armed force attached to him. Halid Ziya Bey, who was involved in the movement in Anatolia until the end of the National Liberation Struggle, returned to his engineering duty after the proclamation of the Republic and was included in the cadastral works again. In 1925, Halid Ziya Bey was appointed as the Head of the Science Committee of the new cadastre organization. He wrote 5 books on cadastre, photogrammetry, trigonometry, and cadastral tools in 1928 and 1929. In addition, as a result of personal work in 1928, the road between the provincial division of the Republic of Turkey with cities has prepared a comprehensive map to show up in the forest and mining. [YILDIZ PALACE MAP ON SILK HANDKERCHIEF FOR THE SOCIAL AIDS IN THE PERIOD OF SULTAN ABDULHAMID 2].
[THE GRECO-TURKISH WAR MAP ON A SILK HANDKERCHIEF MADE IN YILDIZ PALACE] Devlet-i Aliyye ve Yunan Muhaberebesi. Engraved map of the Greco-Turkish War in 1897 on a silk handkerchief made in Yildiz Palace in the period of Sultan Abdulhamid II.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original engraved map on the silk handkerchief made in Yildiz Palace for the 'Iane Sergisi' [i.e. Exhibition of the Social Assistance] in the period of Sultan Abdülhamid II. In its decorative frame. Frame size: 53,5x53,5 cm; map size: 38x38 cm. In Ottoman script. Scale: 1/600.000. Several minimal splits, minor foxing, and slight stains on cloth. Otherwise in good condition. A rare and decorative 1897 silk handkerchief map of the Greco-Turkish War in 1897, which was the only war in which the Ottoman army was victorious during the reign of Abdulhamid 2, is a fine example of Ottoman / Turkish cartographic textiles made in Ottoman court (Yildiz Palace textile workshops). This beautiful map depicts an attractive war scene from the 1313 Greek War on the upper half, and it's engraved a map of Balkan & Greek lands on its lower half. War painting has 'Melona' signature in Ottoman script. The map shows Thessaloniki [i.e. Salonica] Bay on the west; Yanya [i.e. Ioanna] Vilayat on the east; lands of Greece, Galos Bay, Uzi Strait on the south and Dimetoka and Avalonia areas in the Serefiye, Ergiri sanjaks on the north in its period. Written on the map, "Baht-i himâye-yi feyzvâne-i cenâb-i hilâfetpenâhide evlad-i süheda ve mecrûhin-i asakir-i sâhâne", [i.e. It was printed for the "Iane Sergisi" (i.e. The Social Help Exhibition) in the high memory of our soldiers who were martyred and veterans in the Greek War under the patronage of the Sultan.]. The Greco-Turkish War of 1897, also called the Thirty Days' War and known in Greece as the Black '97 (Mauro '97), or the Unfortunate War (Atychis polemos), was a war fought between the Kingdom of Greece and the Ottoman Empire. Its immediate cause was the question over the status of the Ottoman province of Crete, whose Greek majority long-desired union with Greece. Despite the Ottoman victory on the field, an autonomous Cretan State under Ottoman suzerainty was established the following year (as a result of the intervention of the Great Powers after the war), with Prince George of Greece and Denmark as its first High Commissioner. This was the first war effort in which the military and political personnel of Greece were put to test since the Greek War of Independence in 1821. For the Ottoman Empire, this was also the first war effort in which the reorganized military personnel were put to test. The Ottoman army was under the guidance of a German military mission led by Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz, who had reorganized it after the defeat in the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878). The conflict proved Greece was wholly unprepared for war. Plans, fortifications and weapons were non-existent, the mass of the officer corps was unsuited to its tasks, and training was inadequate. As a result, the numerically superior, better organized, equipped and led Ottoman forces pushed the Greek forces south out of Thessaly. Almost all of the aids made to the families or disabled people of those who were martyred in the 1897 Ottoman-Greek War (such as printing this map) were made within the framework of the donations of "Evlâd-i Süheda and Malûlîn-i Guzât-i Asâkir-i Sahane". People and citizens of all classes and beliefs, including members of the Ottoman court, ministers, bureaucrats, civil servants, merchants and tradesmen, participated in this aid campaign at the end of the 19th, beginning of the 20th century. [INFLUENCES BY SIR FRANCIS BAILY IN AN OTTOMAN MAP OF THE SKY] Harita-yi semâ: Kevâkib, Tasnîf-i Kürre-i Cenûbî, Tasnîf-i Kürre-i Simâlî, Mintika-yi hareye mahsûs burûc. [i.e. Map of the sky: Stars, planets, South Pole, North Pole, and Zodiacs].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) A very attractive chromo-lithograph map on paper. Oblong: 26,5x37,5 cm. In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). Light foxing and fading on margins and printed area. A very detailed and fine double hemisphere map of the northern and southern skies, showing the various constellations, together with a third map showing the zodiacs on one paper. On the bottom margin, it's written 'Printed in the 549 Numbered Press', and 'Dersaadet...'. This map seems to be influenced (or, a direct translation) from the map of the sky of Sir Francis Baily, (1774-1844), who was one of the leading English Astronomers of the first part of the 19th Century. He is most famous for his observations of "Baily's beads" during a total eclipse of the Sun. Baily was also a major figure in the early history of the Royal Astronomical Society, as one of the founders and as the president four times. After a tour in the unsettled parts of North America in 1796-1797, his journal of which was edited by Augustus de Morgan in 1856, he entered the London Stock Exchange in 1799. The successive publication of Tables for the Purchasing and Renewing of Leases (1802), of The Doctrine of Interest and Annuities (1808), and The Doctrine of Life-Annuities and Assurances (1810), earned him a high reputation as a writer on life-contingencies; he amassed a fortune through diligence and integrity and retired from business in 1825, to devote himself wholly to astronomy. He had already, in 1820, taking a leading part in the foundation of the Royal Astronomical Society. In 1827, the Society awarded him its Gold Medal for preparation of the Astronomical Society's Catalogue of 2881 stars. He was instrumental in the reform of the Nautical Almanac in 1829. In 1837, he recommended to the British Association and later worked extensively on the reduction of Joseph de Lalande's and Nicolas de Lacaille's catalogues containing about 57,000 stars. He also supervised the compilation of the British Association's Catalogue of 8377 stars (published 1845) and revised the catalogues of Tobias Mayer, Ptolemy, Ulugh Beg, Tycho Brahe, Edmund Halley and Hevelius. His notice of Baily's Beads, during an annular eclipse of the sun on May 15 1836, at Inch Bonney in Roxburghshire, started the modern series of eclipse-expeditions. Very rare.

OTTOMAN MAP OF PALESTINE].
[MAP OF OTTOMAN PALESTINE AND JERUSALEM] [Filistin - Kudüs].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original lithograph map with brown, white and blue tons. 81x57 cm. In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). All toponyms are in Ottoman Turkish and Arabic. Scale: 1:500,000. Shows Mediterranean shores on the north, Bahr-i Lût [i.e. the Dead Sea], Aqaba Bay, areas of Arabic tribes in very detail, in addition, special huge lands like 'Al-Hism Land'. Also, it shows holy places, antiquities, fortresses, rivers; and Turkish Sanjaks, Qazas, Nahiyes, Qariyes based on the Ottoman administrative system. Cartographer is not indicated, but, it's composed for military purposes in the last period of the Imperial Ottoman, especially for showing Arabian tribes spreading over vast areas in its period, just before World War 1 (date of the printing of this map), such as 'Houtat Tribe'. A very detailed and attractive map of Palestine and Quds area and their topography. Following the Muslim conquest of Palestine in 636-640, several Muslim ruling dynasties succeeded each other as they wrestled control of Palestine: the Rashiduns; the Umayyads, who built the Dome of the Rock and the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem; the Abbasids; the semi-independent Tulunids and the Ikhshidids; the Fatimids; and the Seljuks. In 1099, the Crusaders established the Kingdom of Jerusalem in Palestine, which the Ayyubid Sultanate conquered in 1187. The Crusaders failed to retake Palestine despite further attempts. The Egyptian Mamluks took Palestine from the Mongols (who had conquered the Ayyubid Sultanate) in 1260. The Ottomans captured Palestine in 1516 and ruled it until Egypt took it in 1832. Eight years later, the United Kingdom intervened and returned the region to the Ottomans. Considerable demographic changes happened during the 19th century and with the regional migrations of Druze, Circassians, and Bedouin tribes. The emergence of Zionism also brought many Jewish immigrants from Europe and the revival of the Hebrew language. Arabs in Palestine, both Christian and Muslim, settled and Bedouin, were historically split between the Qays and Yaman factions. These divisions had their origins in pre-Islamic tribal feuds between Northern Arabians (Qaysis) and Southern Arabians (Yamanis). The strife between the two tribal confederacies spread throughout the Arab world with their conquests, subsuming even uninvolved families so that the population of Palestine identified with one or the other. Their conflicts continued after the 8th-century Civil war in Palestine until the early 20th century and gave rise to differences in customs, tradition, and dialect which remain to this day. Beit Sahour was first settled in the 14th century by a handful of Christian and Muslim clans (hamula) from Wadi Musa in Jordan, the Christian Jaraisa and the Muslim Shaybat and Jubran, who came to work as shepherds for Bethlehem's Christian landowners, and they were subsequently joined by other Greek Orthodox immigrants from Egypt in the 17th-18th centuries. Due to the legacy of the Ottoman period, the ethnic origins of some rural and urban Palestinians are either Albanian, Circassian, or from other non-Arab populations.

MURAT YANKI.
Cappadocian wines. A guide to wines of faires.
New English Paperback. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 224 p., color ills. Cappadocian wines. A guide to wines of faires. From the time I settled in Cappadocia that is known as a land of marvels with all the amazing rock formations, the question I asked to myself was; why my Turkish ancestors have left nothing written to our time despite the fact that they have been living on these lands for almost one thousand years. This idea pushed me to do the opposite, so to write a book, but not a novel, a multi purpose book with a deep historical emphasis as well. My sole aim by doing this, has been to leave a written document to future, by taking notes about the past and present. Being aware of the fact that wine is one of the oldest companions of mankind, I have decided to write a wine guide about Cappadocia. The existence of wine culture in a region is also a proof of how old its history goes back. In this meaning wine goes hand in hand civilisation. This is vey true for broader Cappadocia that covers Hatti and Hittite lands where the oldest findings obtained in archaeological digs are 5000 year old wine related items. And this makes Cappadocia the oldest vinicultural region of Turkey and one of the oldest in the World.

Tercüman-i Hakîkat, the most important newspaper published during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, was founded by novelist Ahmed Midhat Efendi, (1844-1912). In the beginning, most of the articles were written by Ahmed Midhat Efendi. It was an encyclopedic newspaper with the aim of inculcating and educating reading habits among the Turks and it played an important role in the training of many famous Ottoman journalists. Its first issue was published on June 26, 1878. After Ahmed Midhat's death in 1913, the newspaper changed owners, and the last issue was published on February 11, 1921. New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (31 x 22 cm). In English and Turkish. 80 p., color and b/w ills. An 8200 year old map: The town plan of Çatalhöyük.= 8200 yillik bir harita: Çatalhöyük sehir plani. I was fascinated when I first saw the Catalhoyuk map, a heritage of 'Anatolian Civilizations' which has survived 8,200 years of history, while at the same time I was greatly disappointed that such a unique map was neither known sufficiently enough nor introduced to the cartographic scholars. It was for this reason that about two years ago, I decided to conduct research into the matter. However, as I was already involved in two research projects entitled 'The History of Turkish Mapping in the Republican Era' and 'Historical Relief Maps, ' respectively, it was not possible to find time for the Catalhoyuk map. Once I had completed these studies, I started to carry out my study on 'Piri Reis Kitab-i Bahriye' (Piri Reis and His Book of the Sea) , which has been continiuing for a few years, Thus, my study of the Catalhoyuk map had been delayed once again. When I saw the map once again, in early 1999, I decided that I could not wait any longer. Even though my continuing research would be delayed, I could not avoid giving priority to the study of the Catalhoyuk map. (Vol. 1: A-F / Vol. 2: G-Z). 4 volumes set.
Very Good French Original handsome leather bindings. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In French and Ottoman script. 4 volumes set: ([vi], [2], 784, 125 p., [vi], 1372 p.; [xxx], [2], 1097 p., [vi], 1320 p.). Slight foxing on pages, faded on boards, otherwise a very good set. Ex-libris of Izzet Gündag Kayaoglu. First edition of the complete set of this early dictionary from French to Turkish and from Turkish to French, published in Paris, in London Oriental Translations Committee Printer. Bianchi visited Istanbul at the beginning of the 19th century and prepared dictionary and phrasebooks in Turkish after he had returned to his country. One of his most significant works occurs to be this dictionary. What makes this dictionary noteworthy among other his works is the fact that Turkish words are written together in both Arabic and Latin characters. Turkish words with Arabic letters are written as to stereotyped pronunciation in the work. Therefore, they do not indicate the changes in the language. Bianchi reflects the pronunciation of writing in Turkish letters with Latin characters; and thus, the differences between spelling and pronunciation are highlighted. Thomas-Xavier de Bianchi (1783-1864), born in Paris on June 25, 1783, was the younger brother of the Austrian Field Marshal de Bianchi, Duke of Casalanza. He studied at the Central School of the department of Seine-et-Marne and followed, in Paris, oriental language courses at the College de France and at the Imperial Library under Sylvestre de Sacy. In 1807, he was appointed a pupil at the French school of young people of language in Constantinople, then directed by the scholar Ducaurroy and completed his improvement in Arabic, Persian and Turkish. Sent to Izmir in 1811, he was second there, and then the first dragoman of the Consulate General, and was noted for his dedication during the plague epidemic of 1812. In 1816, he was appointed assistant to the King's secretary-interpreters in Paris and was in charge to accompany the Persian envoy to Louis XVIII in 1819. In 1829, he was sent on a mission to the last day of Algiers, Hussein-pasha. The following year, France intervened in Algeria. He was appointed secretary-interpreter in the title and served as professor of Turkish at the School of Oriental Languages until 1842. After his retirement, he devoted himself to lexicographical and bibliographical work. He was an officer of the Legion of Honor, decorated with the Nichan-Iftikhar, as a member of the Imperial Academy of Constantinople. Tout exemplaire de ce Dictionnaire qui ne serait pas revetu de la signature de l'un des auteurs et editeurs sera repute contrefaçon, et poursuivi cmme tel, en vertu de la loi du 19 juillet 1793. [i.e. Any copy of this Dictionary which does not bear the signature of one of the authors and publishers will be deemed to be counterfeit, and prosecuted as such, under the law of July 19, 1793].

Enyed, Zalathna, Mediasch, Hermannstadt, Hatszeg, Petroseni, Ôzt River, etc. Scale: 1/300,000. Sibiu (Sibiiu - Hermannstadt - Nagyszeben) is a city in Romanian Transylvania. The city straddles the Cibin River, a tributary of the river Olt. The first official record referring to the Sibiu area comes from 1191 when Pope Celestine III confirmed the existence of the free prepositure of the German settlers in Transylvania, the prepositure having its headquarters in Sibiu, named Cibinium at that time. In the 14th century, it was already an important trade center. As of the year 1376, the craftsmen were divided into 19 guilds. Sibiu became the most important ethnic German city among the seven cities that gave Transylvania its German name Siebenbürgen (literally "Seven Citadels"). It was home to the Universitas Saxorum (Community of the Saxons), a network of pedagogues, ministers, intellectuals, city officials, and councilmen of the German community forging an ordered legal corpus and political system in Transylvania since the 1400s. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the city became the second -and then the first most important center of Transylvanian Romanian ethnics. The first Romanian-owned bank had its headquarters here (The Albina Bank), as did the ASTRA (Transylvanian Association for Romanian Literature and Romanian's People Culture). After the Romanian Orthodox Church was granted status in the Habsburg Empire from the 1860s onwards, Sibiu became the Metropolitan seat, and the city is still regarded as the third-most important center of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Between the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and 1867 (the year of the Ausgleich), Sibiu was the meeting-place of the Transylvanian Diet, which had taken its most representative form after the Empire agreed to extend voting rights in the region (Source: Wikipedia). A sheet of the collection of 'The general map of Central Europe'. appeared in the years between 1873-1876 with the work of Joseph Ritter von Scheda, (1815-1888) who was a general, geographer, and cartographer.
