GILL Harry Pelling
'Windsor Castle from Eton Meadows'. An original watercolour painting captioned twice once indistinctly signed and dated in pencil H.P. Gill 07
The watercolour on paper 140 225 mm is mounted once framed but now removed with traces of an old mat visible on the margins of the artwork. The painting is in excellent condition and it would be an ideal candidate for reframing. Harry Pelling Gill 1855-1916 art curator and teacher was born in England; he trained and taught at the Royal College of Art from 1877-82. He was then appointed master of the school of design in Adelaide. 'He arrived in Adelaide in September and organized elementary and advanced classes instruction in crafts teaching of drawing and correspondence lessons. He also gave instruction to trainee teachers. In 1889 Gill became director for technical art . He published books on geometrical drawing and design . In 1892 he was appointed honorary curator of the art gallery and following the resignation in December of Louis Tannert as master of the school of painting Gill assumed control of all the board's art teaching activities. Gill had shown promise as an artist and hoped to win repute in Australia. However teaching and administration had left little time for his painting. His rare decorative and aesthetic compositions and also his landscapes are painted with meticulous detail without sacrificing the overall unified effect. This is a quality passed on to some of his students including the Hambidge sisters and Gustave Barnes in his early work. Gill's landscapes and some of his interiors show that he was interested in the accurate rendering of light - a rare quality in Adelaide before 1900' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Gill travelled to England and Europe in 1899 and he went to New Zealand in early 1907. However he appears not to have visited England the year he produced this watercolour of Windsor Castle. unknown

An original watercolour painting possibly of a sparsely settled Adelaide seaside suburb; unsigned but the artist is identified on the verso as H.P. Gill
The watercolour on paper 135 227 mm is unmounted; apart from a tiny light crease to one top corner it is in fine condition. It is undated but probably circa 1900. Gill's landscapes and some of his interiors show that he was interested in the accurate rendering of light - a rare quality in Adelaide before 1900' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. This charming painting - of coastal tea tree or similar flourishing prominently against a backdrop of a few substantial dwellings scattered along a line in the relatively featureless landscape - certainly satisfies these criteria. unknown

The Straight and Devious Paths of Studentship. A Lecture delivered at the School of Design Adelaide on Friday 9th February 1894
Adelaide: School of Design Art Club 1894. Very Good. Adelaide School of Design Art Club 1894. Octavo 43 pages with a full-page illustration the author's monogram. Flush-cut card lettered in gilt on the front cover a little foxed and nicked with a chip to the foot of the spine; a very good copy. Harry Pelling Gill 1855-1916 art curator and teacher at the time Director for Technical Art. 'In 1892 he was appointed honorary curator of the art gallery and following the resignation in December of Louis Tannert as master of the school of painting Gill assumed control of all the board's art teaching activities. His growing authority in art matters his self-confidence and abrasive manner and his attitude toward other art schools led to criticism. Critics found Gill a vain man who controlled lucrative and influential art offices and who disdained the democratic brotherhood of art. His supporters admitted that he could be uncompliant and disagreeable but said that he had worked hard was a good judge of the monetary value of pictures saved the board expense and was a courageous and incorruptible curator. He supported and reorganized the South Australian Society of Arts and was its first president elected from the fellows 1909-11' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'; this entry contains one of the few errors we have noted in the ADB - the title of this book is given as 'The Straight and Crooked Paths of Studentship'. 14 Views of Old Adelaide from Sketches in 1840-1849 by S.T. Gill F.R. Nixon S. Calvert and O. Korn
Adelaide: E.S. Wigg 1890. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Adelaide E.S. Wigg 1890. Oblong quarto 19 leaves all rectos blank comprising the gilt-pictorial title page by E.C. May 14 full-page tinted lithographic views with tissue-guards the 3-page list of 181 subscribers and the key to plate 5 between plates 4 and 5. Original gilt-decorated half maroon morocco and gilt-lettered brown cloth slightly rubbed at the extremities and lightly bumped on the rear corners; cloth lightly flecked; inner hinge a little loose at the title page; minimal light foxing; essentially a fine copy. Ferguson 9924e but we have seen any number of bindings identical to ours and none as described by Ferguson. He also states that 'The Mitchell Library copy has a pencil note: 200 printed in George Robertson's hand-writing'. In spite of this comment and the 181 subscribers' names in our experience the book is not as rare as these figures would suggest. The fact that this item is essentially the same as Ferguson 9807 with the Galbraith imprint under the gold blocking carrying the Wigg imprint and the Wigg binder's label on the rear pastedown leads us to suspect that the answer has something to do with this change of publisher after the book was printed. Correspondence on this matter is welcome. E.S. Wigg hardcover

La guerriera che sorride. La storia di Rina Louise Dal Cengio
br.
