His work in Fortune showed the breadth of his talents including charts cartoons and maps. The single page map in this uncommon magazine is an excellent example of his work: a conventional mapping of the continent is surrounded by detailed illustrations of the diverse and exotic flora and fauna of the region. A beautiful image of Heart-Shaped Leaved Chorizema native of the Swan River colony from Joseph Paxton's "Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants." With text sheet. The botanical prints from this publication are distinguished by the particularly fine engraving and watercolor technique which gives them the appearance of being watercolor paintings. S. Holden was attributed as the artist of the botanical illustrations for many of the years of publication. The magazine was published between 1834 and 1849 providing information for British gardeners on newly introduced plants suitable for their gardens and greenhouses. Magazine format publication in paper covers; 9.5 x 7 inches; 28 pp. Illustrated with photos descriptive text and map. The photos are numbered and are discussed in brief paragraphs at the back of the booklet. 2 "Visitors' Guide to Perth and Suburbs" Government Tourist and Publicity Bureau; 1952 Issue. Booklet 6.75 x 4.5 inches; 38 pp. Illustrated with photos descriptive text and map. The booklet provides a brief history of Perth its climate an annotated map and an illustrated compendium of attractions. 3 "Pictorial Souvenir Perth W.A." Murray Views Gympie Q. Circa 1952. 20 black and white views in a double-sided accordion-format presentation; paper wraps designed for mailing; 4 x 6 inches. The Guide and Pictorial Souvenir suffer abrasions on the rear panel evidently occasioned by their removal from a tourist's scrapbook. Otherwise each item is in very good clean condition. The three items offer a distinctive image of Perth as it existed in the middle of the last century providing a pictorial contrast between the city's Victorian architecture and "modernist" mid-century buildings. Map shows principal streets also principal streets with tramways ferries underground railway railway and underground tramway. There are various pictorial elements associated with the map including ships in the harbor shrubs in the botanic garden a uniformed figure at Cook's Dock etc. There is an inset Key to Places of Interest listing 61 destinations. Verso of map contains a 14 x 5 inch map in color of Sydney and Environs. Itemized lists include Places of Interest and Tours Around Sydney. Small break in paper at centerfold repairable otherwise very good condition apart from abrasions on rear panel of folded map not impacting map itself evidence that the map was once attached in a tourist's scrapbook. Descriptive text of Fort Denison states "Many interesting relics including "muzzle loaders" and the old Time Gun now 100 years old"; research relating to the gun suggests a circa 1957 date for the map. WorldCat indicates that three libraries world-wide hold the item. It is an attractive and uncommon piece with abrasions to back panel noted. . Bureau. unknown

Illustrations drawn by J. Marchant and engraved by J.B. Allen. Map drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin. Includes illustrations of Australian parrots and cockatoo kangaroos "Natives of Australia Felix" "Natives of the Tribe of Bogan" and a view of Sydney. This map was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin for "The Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World" by Montgomery Martin and published in London by The London Printing and Publishing Company.
