No copies located by OCLC Sister Avabamia nee Mary Elizabeth Stevenson was a disciple of Swami Abhedananda who was one one of Sri RamakrishnaÕs early followers. She became a devotee after hearing Swami Vivekenanda speak in San Francisco around the turn of the century. Sister Avabamia was the leading light for the Vendantic Movement in Australia and New Zealand. In 1910 the Fitzroy City News described her thusly - ÒThe gifted lecturer delivered two lectures every Sunday in the Masonic Hall and during the week held two meetings. Her work carried conviction of its absolute truthfulness and her words of wisdom must have been the result of laborious thought. Though a student for 25 years Sister Avabamia with native modesty says her knowledge is only Òlike a spoonful of water in the ocean.Ó She has a fine personality; robed in her renunciation dress she shows a force of character and a brilliant ability to combat the problems of lifeÉ In the fall of 1911 Sister Avabamia went to Ceylon and India and established some new Vedanta Centers which the Swamis at Belur Math did not recognize. Inspired by VivekenandaÕs educational ideas she established two schools in Ceylon which were eventually taken over by the Ramakrishna Mission. In 1912 she left India and broke away from the Ramakrishna Order. News of her activities for the years 1905-12 appear in the monthly journal she initiated The Star of the East later named the Vedanta Universal Messenger published first in Sydney and then in Melbourne AustraliaÓ Stavig; Western Admirers of Ramakrishna and His Disciples. Vivekananda was one of the main representatives of Neo-Vedanta a modern interpretation of selected aspects of Hinduism in line with western esoteric traditions especially Transcendentalism New Thought and Theosophy. His reinterpretation was and is very successful creating a new understanding and appreciation of Hinduism within and outside India and was the principal reason for the enthusiastic reception of yoga transcendental meditation and other forms of Indian spiritual self-improvement in the West. Leaves reinforced in margin. 4 239-266 2 185-198 pp. � First edition of these two important papers by Captain Matthew Flinders the first circumnavigator of Australia.<br><br>OBSERVATIONS UPON THE MARINE BAROMETER:<br>First printing of this important paper relating Flinder's observations on the ship "Investigator" when exploring the coast of Australia. IN THE PAPER THE NAME "AUSTRALIA" APPEARS PROBABLY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A SCIENTIFIC MEMOIR p. 247.<br><br>The name Australia was popularised by Matthew Flinders who pushed for the name to be formally adopted as early as 1804. When preparing his manuscript and charts for his 1814 A Voyage to Terra Australis he was persuaded by his patron Sir Joseph Banks to use the term Terra Australis as this was the name most familiar to the public. Flinders did so but allowed himself the footnote:<br>"Had I permitted myself any innovation on the original term it would have been to convert it to Australia; as being more agreeable to the ear and an assimilation to the names of the other great portions of the earth." In the paper offered he used the name "Australia" as early as 1806.<br><br>CONCERNING THE DIFFERENCES IN THE MAGNETIC NEEDLE:<br>First printing of probably the first work to discover and correct for the errors of the compass caused by the iron in ships by the first circumnavigator of Australia.<br><br>"Captain Matthew Flinders RN 16 March 1774 - 19 July 1814 was one of the most successful navigators and cartographers of his age. In a career that spanned just over twenty years he sailed with Captain William Bligh circumnavigated Australia and encouraged the use of that name for the continent which had previously been known as New Holland. He survived shipwreck and disaster only to be imprisoned for violating the terms of his scientific passport by changing ships and carrying prohibited papers. He identified and corrected the effect upon compass readings of iron components and equipment on board wooden ships and he wrote what may be the first work on early Australian exploration A Voyage to Terra Australis."Wikepedia unknown

Adelaide; binding a little rubbed at the extremities with minor wear to the corners; minor signs of use and age to the contents but overall in very good condition. Mounted on the front pastedown is an original albumen paper portrait of Mitford 90 � 58 mm. This collection is not to be confused with the abridged reprint edition published in London in 1882 with a Woodburytype portrait of Mitford an enlarged detail from an example of our portrait. That volume was essentially a memorial to the Mitford years January 1867 to November 1869 'freed from advertisements and unimportant matter' which nowadays means 'lacking all character and a lot of appeal to boot'. Pat Stretton contributed to the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' the entry for Eustace Reveley Mitford 1811-1869 'satirist'. It is almost short enough to quote in full - it is certainly worthy of being widely circulated! However after sampling a few of her introductory remarks we'll follow her estimable lead and quote Stretton quoting Mitford. He 'found his true vocation in 1867' with 'Pasquin': 'It reviewed plays and books and campaigned on behalf of the oppressed such as prisoners and destitute children but its chief aim was to "aggravate our subscribers in every possible way" and Mitford had a sure eye for what would annoy South Australians most. Introducing the grape was "a great mistake". Democracy was another: "democracy and dishonesty universal suffrage and universal pillage . are synonymous terms and inseparable results". Adelaide's architecture was "mediaeval Clapham Common Gothic with a tendency to the Old Bailey Tuscan". Satire resists description. Here is Mitford at his lethal best: "People in England are profoundly astonished to hear that the land has not cost the Government or the country a single farthing - that in fact well to put it as mildly as possible - that we stole it! - took possession you understand in the Queen's name - just as they used aforetime to burn alive respectable ladies and gentlemen in the name of the Deity - and that when the native rangers attempted to remove the sheep found trespassing on their lands we shot them like dogs also in the name of the Queen - and then sent missionaries - very nice men in white chokers - to inform them of a beautiful new kind of religion which strictly prohibited theft and murder or to covet a blackfellow's land or his lubra or his waddy his boomerang or his beer or anything that is his or any other man's. Of course the blacks were deeply impressed with the sanctity and consistent justice of a religion which was to save their souls but played the very devil with their bodies their lands and their kangaroos. We make as much fuss about permitting settlers to occupy this land as if we had a right to it"'. Contemporary full calf the spines gilt in compartments with contrasting leather title-labels; calf moderately scuffed with a few scrapes and scratches and a few small light stains to the rear cover of the second volume; endpapers a little foxed and offset; a few trifling marks and two marginal annotations to the second volume; a very good set internally fine. Mounted on the front pastedown of each volume is a bookplate stating that 'This book was given by the Associates of the late Rev. Dr. Bray to the Clerical Lending Library of Adelaide . Australia . 1846' the last three words written in ink. Each rear pastedown has a large plate outlining the 'Rules for the Preservation of Dr. Bray's Lending Libraries'. The foot of each spine has a gilt oval stamp 'Library of Dr Bray's Associates' numbered within the oval 67 68 and 69 respectively. There are call numbers in white ink on each spine and an ink stamp and acquisition number on each title page. Once this accessioning work was finished it looks like the books were then put on the shelves and never opened again. Dr Thomas Bray 1656-1730 was an English clergyman and abolitionist who created a system of parochial libraries in England and the American colonies during his lifetime. One of the aims was to assist the spread of the Anglican Church in the British colonies. The work continued well into the nineteenth century attested to by these volumes given to the fledgling settlement of Adelaide less than a decade after the colony of South Australia was establishment. Loosely inserted in the first volume is a contemporaneous autograph letter duodecimo one page 15 September signed by Villus Butler. It is addressed to 'My dear Lord Bishop' asking him for 'a few lines to the Bishop of Melbourne . to take with me' presumably as a letter of introduction. Augustus Short 1802-1883 was consecrated the first Bishop of Adelaide in June 1847; he arrived in the colony on 28 December that year. Australian Daguerreotypes
A pair of quarter-plate daguerreotype portraits each approximately 100 � 80 mm of Thomas Radford 1795-1867 and his wife Martha 1796-1867
The Radfords were born in Devon emigrated to South Australia in October 1838 and lived in the Barossa Valley from the mid-1840s until their death. From the perceived ages of the subjects these images would appear to date from the 1850s. Other later images of the Radfords are held in the State Library of South Australia. They substantiate the identification and confirm that these daguerreotypes by an anonymous photographer are of rural South Australian origin as the Radfords did not leave the colony after they arrived here in 1838. Both images are in excellent condition with the original brass matts one a little tarnished preservers and glass but uncased as found. Daguerreotypes of Australian origin are rare. unknown

Mounted and glazed in a contemporary frame visible image size 525 � 385 mm; although the acidic matt and mount have discoloured the artwork the overall condition is very good. The drawing is reproduced in the book tipped in on page 9 with the caption 'Swan Lake in chalk' printed below the image. Trevor Clare was a well-known South Australian artist and art teacher; born in 1917 he was active through to the 1980s at least. A triptych of three original sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs in the original mount with calligraphic captions in white ink and frame external dimensions 345 � 875 mm. Each image visible size approximately 145 � 200 mm shows Sir George Brookman 1850-1927 mining speculator politician and philanthropist holding the lead rope of one of the three Suffolk Punch mares he imported for his stud farm at O'Halloran Hill around the middle of 1905. The horses are identified as Beauty Snowdrop and Molly
The photographs are a little uniformly faded with some unobtrusive tiny dark spots and minimal silvering-out; they are attractively presented in the original wooden frame with a gilt fillet behind the glass. The frame is lightly scuffed in places; it has a new hanging wire and backing tape but retains the original framer's label on the verso 'From K. Cameron Picture Framer and Mount Cutter Leigh St. Adelaide'. Two of these images heavily cropped to show only the horse were reproduced in 'The Observer' Adelaide 24 June 1905. The photographer is not identified. The Suffolk is a breed of draught horse nicknamed Punch because of its stocky appearance and power Hendricks: 'International Encyclopedia of Horse Breeds' 2007. unknown

Image size 229 � 286 mm on the original mount 252 � 304 mm with the caption in ink below the image behind a mat with interior quarter-round corners maximum visible image size 223 � 282 mm framed and glazed with a gilt fillet behind the glass. The caption is not visible when the mat is in position; the bottom left-hand corner of the mount and photograph has been broken away and repaired with a 75 mm diagonal crack across that corner visible but unobtrusive; there is a tiny amount of surface loss to the shirt of the player in the centre of the front row; overall a very appealing period piece in an early but not contemporary mat and frame. Furreedpore Faridpur formerly in East Bengal India now Bangladesh has important Australian connections exemplified by this photograph. Silas Mead 1834-1909 a Baptist minister emigrated to South Australia in July 1861; 'he preached at chapels in Adelaide and North Adelaide. Regular services began at White's Rooms and within a month a Baptist Church was constituted with twenty-six members. Inspired by Mead's enthusiastic leadership the congregation decided to build a large church in Flinders Street; it was opened on 19 May 1863. When its cost of �7000 was cleared by 1864 he established at Furreedpore India the first constituted Australian Baptist Foreign Mission and later helped to found similar societies in other Australian colonies'. His son Dr Cecil Silas Mead 1866-1940 followed closely in his footsteps; after graduating from the University of Adelaide in 1891 'he served as a medical missionary in eastern Bengal for twenty-nine years returned to Adelaide to teach anatomy in 1923-39 and died in June 1940' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Dr Mead is second from the right in the top seated row; we have no reason to doubt that this photograph was once in his possession and for all intents and purposes it is unique. A copy of 'Doctor Sahib: The Story of Dr Cecil Silas Mead' by Elva Schroeder 2013 is offered together with the photograph. unknown
