‎MEYER HEA. H. E.‎

‎Manners and Customs of the Aborigines of the Encounter Bay Tribe South Australia‎

‎Adelaide: 'printed and published for Government by George Dehane' 1846. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Adelaide 'printed and published for Government by George Dehane' 1846. Octavo ii 15 pages. Original stiffened blue wrappers with the title page details repeated on the front cover; trifling surface blemish to the front cover; an excellent copy. Heinrich Edward August Meyer was a Lutheran missionary who arrived in Australia in 1840 and spent just over two years living with the Raminyeri tribe of the Encounter Bay area before publishing in 1843 'the first grammar and vocabulary on Ngarrindjeri "Vocabulary of the Language spoken by the Aborigines of the Encounter Bay Tribe South Australia". He lived at Encounter Bay until 1848 . Meyer was part of an Adelaide-based community of missionaries from the Dresden Missionary School which placed great emphasis on learning the language because it believed in the importance of communicating with the Aboriginal people in their own language . He also had continuing contact with other missionaries who were also involved in writing grammars such as Clamor Schurmann who had published a grammar of Kaurna the language to the North of Ngarrindjeri just before Meyer's arrival. This background as well as the assertion in his introduction to the 1843 grammar that the whole publication had been twice reviewed with different natives so that the meaning assigned to the words may be relied upon as correct . has resulted in a text that is considered to be a reliable reflection of the language at the time and a good grammar for its time' Corinne Bannister: 'A Longitudinal Study of Ngarrindjeri' online. In this short but closely printed pamphlet Meyer in 'giving an account of these people . endeavours to trace the life of one from his birth upwards'. His extended period of living with the Encounter Bay people in these early years of white settlement adds authenticity to his detailed account of subjects such as hunting sorcery and burial customs. Ferguson 4348; see also Ferguson 13095 WOODS J.D. editor: The Native Tribes of South Australia Adelaide Wigg 1879 which reprints this item; Greenway 6696. ‎JOYNER Frederick Allen‎

‎'Bunyeroo Valley Flinders Ranges'. A vintage gelatin silver photograph visible image size 230 360 mm captioned and signed in pencil on the mat by this influential pioneering South Australian photographer‎

‎The mat shows some acid discolouration and is a little foxed; the photograph is in excellent condition behind glass and in the original simple timber frame. Frederick Allen Joyner 1863-1945 was 'President of the South Australian Photographic Society at the height of its influence as a leading group in the fledgling nation and as an individual he had his own work shown and reproduced around the world. Later in the 1920s he was one of the first modern photographers to see and interpret the light and nuances of the Flinders Ranges' from the catalogue of the 1981 AGSA exhibition of F.A. Joyner's photographs. unknown‎

‎Berri. KRANTZ Harry‎

‎'Berri 1921'. A vintage sepia-toned panorama 100 x 460 mm comprising three original gelatin silver photographs of approximately equal size‎

‎The title and photographer's credit are written in a neat calligraphic hand in white ink on the original mount. The left- and right-hand photographs are a little unevenly tanned otherwise it is a fine panorama attractively presented behind glass in its original polished timber frame external dimensions 190 x 595 mm. Berri on the River Murray about 240 kilometres north-east of Adelaide was proclaimed a town in 1911 just a decade before these photographs were taken. Irrigation subsequently led to the establishment of the vineyards and fruit orchards that are synonymous with the region. However the 'first impetus for settlement came when paddle steamers came down the River Murray and a refuelling stop was developed' at this 'wide bend in the river' Wikipedia and it is this aspect of Berri's history that is captured in this panorama. The fledgling township comes a distant second to the river the paddle-steamers and the vast woodheap that takes up half the width of the scene. unknown‎

Wilcox Fisher and Mayo are all significant local South Australian family names. Sidney Wilcox bequeathed his substantial Brougham Place residence for the creation of a residential college for women St Ann's College; the Mayo dynasty needs no introduction; M.S. ‎Northern Part of Australia. Despatch Respecting.‎

‎Sydney: Government Printer 1862. Fine. Sydney Government Printer 1862. Foolscap folio 6 pages. Drop-title; small holes in the inner margins where stab-sewn when bound now disbound with secondary page numbers 1091-1096 stamped in the top corners; a fine copy. The despatches from the Duke of Newcastle the incumbent Secretary of State for the Colonies concern whether 'the northern part of Australia should be formed into a new Colony or that a portion of the territory in question should be annexed to Queensland'. Newcastle's recommendation was 'to annex to South Australia so much of this territory as lies south of the tropic and to attach the rest of it provisionally to Queensland'. As it turned out the Northern Territory of South Australia came into being in 1863 annexing all the relevant land both north and south of the Tropic of Capricorn. This annexed land was eventually surrendered to the Commonwealth in 1911. New South Wales Parliamentary Paper 708-A of 1862. Government Printer unknown‎

‎STEPHEN George Milner‎

‎The Case of the Honorable George Milner Stephen‎

‎Adelaide: with the colophon 'Robert Thomas & Co. Printers Hindley Street' 1840. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide with the colophon 'Robert Thomas & Co. Printers Hindley Street' circa 1840. Octavo 140 pages. Later half calf; mild signs of use; a very good copy. The first leaf is signed 'B'; the intended preliminaries including the title page are not present and were most likely never printed. The subject of the book is the 1839 libel action counter-action for wilful and corrupt perjury and the counter-counter-action for libel involving George Milner Stephen South Australian Attorney-General and Crown Solicitor. The actions stemmed from Stephen's speculative land dealings in early 1839 and this lengthy account is drawn from the Supreme Court records the Government Gazette and newspapers of the day from May-September that year. Robert Thomas Government Printer and newspaper proprietor was the successful defendant in the second libel case. This fascinating expos was almost certainly printed in at most a mere handful of copies and never released for general distribution. It appears to be unrecorded. with the colophon 'Robert Thomas & Co., Printers, Hindley Street' hardcover‎

‎A collection of ten vintage gelatin silver photographs each approximately 110 x 160 mm featuring the derailment of a South Australian 500 Class Mountain-type locomotive Number 506‎

‎The versos of all photographs are stamped 'The Advertiser . Adelaide . Krischock Photos copyright'. 506 'Sir George Murray' entered service in October 1926; it was withdrawn in June 1959 and scrapped three years later. We have been able to trace a couple of relatively minor derailments involving this locomotive but not this particular incident. The terrain and surrounding vegetation suggest to us the mallee country between Tailem Bend and the border; the clothing on the bystanders especially the two boys in their long woollen socks thick overcoats and school caps brings back childhood memories from the early 1950s. But the train wreck is the story and this series of photographs serves graphically to confirm the official SAR estimates of the total weight of the engine and tender at more than 220 tons. hardcover‎
