He was a horticulturist and a shrewd businessman who went down in history known as the first manufacturer of olive oil in the United States and the inventor of the equipment necessary for the production of said oil. He was also responsible for bringing the eucalyptus tree to Santa Barbara. Ellwood Bluffs County Park and Ellwood Union School in the region have been named after him. Written by Francis March "considered the principal founder of modern comparative linguistics in Anglo-Saxon" the book was said to be aimed at "training the pupil to see hear and think as well as to remember rightly." Marsh. Mailing label of previous owner on first page. Richard Joseph Beamish November 6 1869 – October 1 1945 was a Pennsylvania lawyer and journalist. He served a term as the state's Secretary of the Commonwealth and served on the state's Public Utilities Commission. General Peyton Conway March December 27 1864 – April 13 1955 was a senior officer of the United States Army. He served in the Philippines on the Mexican border and World War I. March was the ninth Chief of Staff from 1918 to 1921 accomplishing centralized control over supply the creation of the Air Service Tank Corps and Chemical Warfare Service. While Francis A. March was a noted author and authority little can be found on the internet about him. He shares the name with a noted polymath who lived from 1825 to 1911 and whose information dominates such name searches. From the American Antiquarian Society: The Society holds a strong collection of salesman's samples or dummy books which have also been called "blads." These specimen books were used by the itinerant agents of subscription publishers to entice customers to agree to purchase a copy of a work in advance of delivery. This form of marketing was common in America during the years just before and after the Civil War. A typical specimen book of the nineteenth century consists of sample sheets in a sample binding. Sometimes these sheets are in a prepublication state and thus may have bibliographic interest. A customer could choose among alternative styles of binding and a sample book usually includes the spines of available styles mounted inside the covers. The sample book might also include a printed prospectus describing the virtues of the work or edition with recommendations from well-known persons. Most specimen books also include blank forms on which the salesman entered the names addresses sometimes occupations and the number of copies his subscribers agreed to purchase. Subscription forms can provide demographic information on book ownership if not on actual readership. The Society holds over 750 salesman's sample books issued before 1900; about 350 of these were issued before 1877. Most of the early ones date from the 1860s and 1870s. Closely related to the salesman's dummies are prospectuses pre-publication descriptions of books newspapers and magazines which list the title of the item the publishers and the terms of publication. Sometimes they are also subscription papers but more often they are only announcements of forthcoming publications.
