Very good. 123pp. Quarto 27 cm Black cloth covered boards with yellow ink stamped titles and designs on the spine and front cover. Frontispiece and a few illustrations in the text. Small brown spot to rear hinge and numerical ink stamp on rear pastedown. In a clear jacket trimmed short with printed blurb rippled mounted to front jacket flap. The jacket has a few small closed and open tears to the edges. Originally published in 1928 by Pascal Covici.<br /> <br /> From the limitation page- "This large paper edition designed by Lewis F. White is limited to 1499 numbered copies for the United States and the same number for the British Empire. Ten unnumbered copies have been struck off for reviewers. Number 399."<br /> <br /> A bawdy epic poem of which Louis Untermeyer says: "And first and last it lives. Wildly cheaply drunkenly filthily and accurately it lives. FIRST EDITION first printing the suppressed first state lacking the final two lines of verse on the last page. According to Spiegelman's agent Deborah Karl Pantheon finished publication of the book and sent out author's copies for review. Coming home on the train Karl noticed the mistake on the last page and informed Spiegelman whose initial reaction was to call for the entire run to be reprinted. Instead Pantheon floated the lines in to correct the error and save costs. This is presumably one of only a small handful likely to have been preserved of this first issue. Pantheon unknown
