There are many photos of the specific ships which differed from each other as to the kind of "catch" which they sought. There are chapters on East Cornish Luggers and West Cornish luggers. There are East coast Luggers and Drifters.There is a chapter on the historical aspects of such fishing and ships. The d.j. is mostly there with a small chunk gone at the top of the spine and very small tears to the corners of the top board. Who knew there were ships called "nickeys " and "dandies" Even to the novice this book is well written and is full of interesting anecdotes pertaining to the sea and fishing. . First Edition. Cloth. My Country - A Poem of American - By Russell W. Davenport
New York: Simon & Schuster 1944. Two copies of this book one belonging to Fredric March and the other to his wife Florence Eldridge. The poem was written during World War II and was presented in adapted dramatic form several times over the NBC radio network. The copy belonging to Fredric March is a second printing and is signed by him in pencil on the flyleaf - Fredric March November 1944. With some pencil notes by him referring to the text. At a later date the author has inscribed the book to his friend - For Fred March - Concerning whose reading of this poem words fail me - Russell Davenport. On the death of President Franklin Roosevelt in April 1945 the NBC Radio Network had March give a dramatic reading of the poem as part of its tribute to the fallen wartime President. The first printing copy belonging to Florence Eldridge is heavily annotated by her in pencil for an earlier radio reading in which she acted. Her copy is a first printing and inscribed by the author - For Florence Affectionately Russell Nov 30 / 44 And don’t for Dec 11!. There is an Autograph Letter Signed by Russell Davenport to Eldridge taped to the front pastedown tape browned dated December 12 1944 written after her radio reading - Dear Florence- This is just a little note wholly inadequate to express my appreciation for all your effort and care in the reading of My Country. You gave a superb performance. If there is ever anything that an unlikely scrivener can do in return you know where to come. Let me see you soon. Affectionately Russ. Both books are enclosed together in a custom clamshell box. Russell Davenport 1899-1954 was a very interesting man and close friend of the Marchs. As Wikipedia notes he “.served with the U.S. Army in World War I and received the Croix de Guerre. He enrolled at Yale University and graduated in 1923 where he was classmate of Henry Luce and Briton Hadden who founded Time magazine. While at Yale he became a member of the secret society Skull and Bones. In 1929 he married the writer Marcia Davenport; they divorced in 1944. He joined the editorial staff of Fortune magazine in 1930 and became managing editor in 1937. At age forty-one he turned to politics and became a personal and political advisor to Wendell Willkie. Willkie was the Republican nominee for the 1940 presidential election and lost the election to Franklin D. Roosevelt. After Willkie's death in 1944 Davenport became a defacto leader of the internationalist Republicans. Who was "Hilary March" This is apparently her only published book unless she wrote a 1927 novel called "Wet Weather" and when anyone writes a single novel which focuses rather intensely on the personal psychodrama of a protagonist of the same gender a reader's speculations OK mine inevitably trend to the autobiographical. Add to that a complete absence of any biographical cover blurb at least in this the American edition and one begins to suspect a pseudonym. Add to THAT the particular thematic concern of this particular book -- "An unwanted child she found her ability to trust and love constantly thwarted. A tentative first friendship was destroyed by a schoolmistress who accused her of Lesbianism. Accepting the woman's accusation as truth Barbara spent her adolescence questioning her feelings and despising herself." -- and I just can't help but wonder as I said: "Who WAS 'Hilary March'" Published in the U.K. in 1966 as "Either/Or." . 'Simon was attracted to the exciting intellectual environment emerging at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. After moving to Carnegie in 1949 Simon stayed there for more than five decades. At Carnegie Simon collaborated on work that established the field of organization theory. The founding work was a major study done with James G. March published as Organizations. The book continued the argument that decision makers are not able to act in an objectively rational manner; rather they are constrained by both cognitive and external limitations. So instead of assuming that each decision maker scans all possible alternatives and chooses the one that maximizes expected utility Simon argued that decision makers instead use 'satisficing' as a criterion for making decisions; they choose the first alternative that looks 'good enough.' March and Simon wrote in Organizations 'Most human decision making whether individual or organizational is concerned with the discovery and selection of satisfactory alternatives; only in exceptional cases is it concerned with the discovery and selection of optimal alternatives.' . . . One of Simon's insights was that the observed complexity of human behavior arose from simple and general underlying mechanisms that were applied to a complex task environment. Simon illustrated this with his famous metaphor of 'the ant on the beach.' The ant's goal is to reach some distant food. While the ant's path to the food seems very complex twisting and turning most of the apparent complexity is due to the grains of sand to be traversed. The complexity of the environment rather than the complexity of mechanism within the decision maker gives rise to the observed behavior. One of 750 finely printed copies published for subscribers of which this is #674. With illustrations by Reginald Marsh. A lightly handled copy with some darkening to the boards and edge wear slight fading to the cloth spine. A long narrative poem depicting the capricious and rebellious moods of the late Jazz Age. As Louis Untermeyer says in his introductory piece: “The Wild Party is Noel Coward in terms of Black Bottom; it is the Masefield’s Daffodil Murder translated into post-war night-clubbed bootlegged sex-ridden tabloid-jazzed New York.†Director Rex Ingram 1892 - 1950 is best known for his films Broken Feathers 1916 The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse 1921 The Prisoner of Zenda 1922 Scaramouche 1923 and The Garden of Allah 1929. FIRST EDITION first printing the suppressed first state lacking the final two lines of verse on the last page. According to Spiegelman's agent Deborah Karl Pantheon finished publication of the book and sent out author's copies for review. Coming home on the train Karl noticed the mistake on the last page and informed Spiegelman whose initial reaction was to call for the entire run to be reprinted. Instead Pantheon floated the lines in to correct the error and save costs. This is presumably one of only a small handful likely to have been preserved of this first issue. <br/><br/> Pantheon hardcover books
