Tony Curtis: The Autobiography SIGNED
New York: William Morrow and Company Inc. Fine in Fine dj. c.1993. First Edition. Hardcover. lovely as-new copy with no discernible wear to either book or jacket. B&W photographs INSCRIBED with only the inscribee's first name and SIGNED by the author on the verso of the half-title page with some bleed-through. Bernie Schwartz of the Bronx tells his story "from his boyhood in the Depression-era New York streets -- back when he was a fast-footed quick-witted kid the son of Hungarian-Jewish immigrants -- through forty years as an eminent screen idol. The book pulls no punches: Curtis debunks myths of stardom and glamour with a raw uncensored street-honed New York bite." He rather negated the "The Autobiography" subtitle when he published another one in 2005 "American Prince" which was subtitled "My Autobiography." Signed by Author . Sayonara Good-bye
London: W. Collins Sons & Co. Ltd. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1926 c.1924. 5th printing. Hardcover. book has only minor wear to extremities brief gift inscription "To 'Mamma'" on ffep; jacket is somewhat age-toned with small tears and minor paper loss at most corners and base of spine short closed tear at lower left corner of front panel. The second of several Japanese-set novels by this author a British diplomat and Foreign Office official who spent most of the 1920s stationed in Asia and per Wikipedia "was a significant influence on the British foreign policy in the Far East in the early 20th century." Per the jacket blurb both his first two books the previous one was "Kimono" were "bitterly assailed by sentimental orientalists who allege that the coldly realistic picture Mr. Paris paints of Japanese life is libellous but it is significant that Far-Eastern English journals have been unanimously enthusiastic about Mr. Paris's accuracy and insight." The book concerns a young English priest who marries a Japanese woman. It should be noted that the book is unrelated to the later novel of the same name by James Michener which was adapted for a Hollywood movie in 1957 even though the two books share the theme of interracial romance. . Song of Haiti: The Lives of Dr. Larimer and Gwen Mellon at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital of Deschapelles
New York: Public Affairs Press 2000. Hardcover. VG/VG. Beige and brown boards with gilt spine lettering. Illustrated dust jacket with blue and gray lettering. xii 344 pp. Illustrations. "An inspiring account by an acclaimed biographer of the lives of Larimer and Gwendolyn Mellon who used their initiative and their wealth to build the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in the Artibonite Valley of Haiti a place where life expectancy was once the lowest in the hemisphere. Larimer Mellon was the youngest son of Paul Mellon renowned Pittsburgh financier and seemed destined for a life of high finance and high society. Instead he went to med-school and upon graduating moved with his wife Gwen to Haiti the poorest country in the hemisphere. In one of the most isolated and impoverished areas of the country they built a hospital and for the rest of his life Larry Mellon served as a physician there. To this day Gwen Mellon remains at the hospital and in Haiti. Song of Haiti is a beautifully written look at the passion that drove this couple and that inspired them to leave behind a world of almost unfathomable wealth and luxury and devote their lives to the poorest of the poor in a country far from home."--Provided by publisher.
