The French government brought in people from their colonies all over the globe to recreate architectural styles and temples including a massive reproduction of Angkor Wat even including an entire Senegalese Village. The lighting costumes and designs were at the height of the Art Deco era. He refers to a 'traite de Commerce' and the 'Conseil Superieur du Commerce dont j'ai l'honneur d'etre membre'. The letter is accompanied by an engraved portrait of 'The Late M. The only copy of this item on OCLC WorldCat is in the Canadian National Archives. An attractive and characteristic piece of late nineteenth-century French printing. The present copy is 14 1 pp 16mo. With frontispiece and eight illustrations and vignettes. Stitched booklet 13 x 7.5 cm. In wraps printed in black and red. In fair condition lightly aged in grubby wraps. Tipped-in before the back cover is a two-page 'Specimen of the text and illustrations on vellum of the paper-mills of Le Marais' on a bifolium with a page of text on the reverse of the first leaf and a full-page illustration on the second. On reverse of title: 'The illustrations in this catalogue are taken from the books that have already appeared in La Petite Collection Guillaume'. Colophon reads: 'THESE BOOKS have been composed engraved printed stitched and bound in cloth at the printing office of Edouard Guillaume 105 boulevard Brune 105 PARIS'. The text begins: 'The highest tribute that could be offered to La Petite Collection Guillaume is the manner in which it has been imitated both in Europe and America.' Later on the announcement is made that 'Messrs. George Routledge & Sons believe that the great Anglo-American public have sufficiently good taste not to support imitations of this kind and therefore intend to issue in English the original Guillaume Collection produced in the same marvellous manner as the French Edition.' Details of forthcoming titles and price are given on a plan of two volumes a month. The illustrators are named as 'Conconi Fournier Grand Prix de Rome Gambard Marold Mittis Rossi and others'. Printed heading Ministry of Munitions of War Whitehill Place SW 4 June 1916. One page 4to good condition. "Two little acts of Justice: one yto John Palmer who I am told has twice tried to enlist and was turned down for eyes but the other 'shirkers' stand; one to one: I thought and thought about my fatal phrase which did not sound quite right on the phone and yet was familiar: : what I said was 'I'd rather be cut than shot for a cause I don't believe in'- " He imagines how good it would be when the fighting is over "dividon and pain". "But I am anxious for things are not going well at Verdun the Germans may take it by instalemnts within five or six weeks and then if they burst through between Soissons and my old fear Berry au Bac . hardly anything will escape the pincers same model as use against the Russians. The one chance is that they have worn themselves out by dint of victory." An obituary states: "He served in the French army and during the war was section officer to the British Ministry of Munitions. On letterhead of 216 Boulevard Péreire Paris. 2pp. 8vo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged. The recipient is addressed as 'Chère Madame' and is not otherwise identified although the conclusion connects her with 'Monsieur Hollard' i.e. he maried Marie Hollard. He writes that he will be in London in six days and that he will only have 'douze ou quinze jours à passer en Angleterre' and that he wishes to spend his time 'de la manière le plus profitable au succès de mon oeuvre. Il s'agit de collecter pour ma nouvelle église'. He states the amount he has already raised and what is still needed and asks whether a meeting could be held at Stanmore of persons interested in the religious state of France who would be willing to listen to a talk by him. He presumes he can count upon the sympathy of 'M. Bernays' i.e. Rev. Leopold Bernays Rector of Stanmore 1860-1883. He feels that 'ces réunions plus intimes sont souvant plus utiles que des sermons' and asks for her advice. He concludes by stating that he has heard news of her from 'Dr <Grangnard>'.
