With The Ownership Signature Of Cal Tech Physicist Robert F Bacher Who Followed Hans Bethe To Cornell In 1935 Where He Started Doing Experimental Work In Nuclear Physics With Bethe And Left Theoretical Work Behind. Bethe And Bacher Co-Authored Some Of Their Published Work While At Cornell. Bacher Was Quickly Promoted To Full Professor And Director Of The Laboratory Of Nuclear Studies. Early On He Had Felt That The United States Needed To Start Doing War Work And When Lee Dubridge Head Of The Radiation Lab Working On Radar At Mit Summoned Him There In 1941 He Went. Then Late In 1942 Oppenheimer Who Had Been One Of Bacher's Instructors Earlier At Caltech Approached Bacher About A New Lab For Nuclear Weapons Work That Was Just Starting Up And The Following Spring Asked Him To Join The Manhattan Project. Bacher Declined Initially Telling Oppenheimer That What He Needed Was Engineers. Ultimately When Oppenheimer Made A Commitment To Hiring More Engineers And Made Him Head Of The Experimental Physics Division Bacher Signed On. From The Beginning Bacher Was Firmly Opposed To Making Los Alamos A Military Lab And Persuaded Oppenheimer Who Had Agreed To Take A Commission As Lieutenant Colonel And Had Already Ordered His Uniforms To Keep It Under Civilian Control At Least Until They Had Enough Fissionable Material For A Bomb. When The Project Was Reorganized In July 1944 To Speed Work On Implosion Bacher'S Experimental Physics Division Was Split And He Was Put In Charge Of The G For Gadget The Code Name For The Bomb Division. Bacher Personally Escorted The First Bomb To The Test Site In July Of 1945. In 1946 He Was Awarded The President'S Medal For Merit For His Work On The Manhattan Project. Bacher Returned To Cornell Hoping To Get Back To High-Energy Physics But The Bomb'S Aftermath Continued To Involve Him. He Felt Strongly That There Should Be Some Sort Of International Control Of Atomic Weapons And Worked Hard On Negotiations With The Soviet Union. He Admitted In His Oral History That This Was Perhaps Idealistic But Thought That Getting This Technology Out In The Open Might Have Avoided The Subsequent Cold War. When The Atomic Energy Commission Was Established Bacher Served As The Only Scientist Among Its Members; He Had Tried To Decline The Post But Took It On When He Learned That There Would Be No Scientist At All If He Didn'T Accept. While A Member Of The Aec He Pushed For The Development Of Nuclear Submarines And Breeder Reactors For Commercial Power. In The Meantime Lee Dubridge Now President Of Caltech Offered Him A Position As Chairman Of The Division Of Physics Mathematics And Astronomy Or As Just A Professor Whichever He Preferred. "The Decision I Came To Was A Fateful One And Probably Illustrates A Major Failing In My Makeup" Bacher Said In The Oral History. What He Saw As A Major Failing In His Makeup Was In Fact A Superb Talent For Envisioning The Future And Leading The Institute Into It. After Getting A Commitment That The Institute Would Support A Program In High-Energy Physics Both Theoretical And Experimental Bacher Arrived In 1949. One Of His First Hires In High-Energy Physics Was Robert Walker Whom He Had Known At Los Alamos And Cornell. Another Of Bacher'S Early Recruits Was Richard Feynman Who Was Reportedly Feeling "Unsettled" At Cornell; Bacher Persuaded Him To Sign On At Caltech With A Sabbatical Year In Brazil In Between. Feynman Then Settled In Pasadena In 1951 For The Rest Of His Career. Now With Feynman And Robert Christy Who Had Come In 1946 Bacher Felt He Had The Two Most Outstanding Theorists From Los Alamos. Then In 1955 He Also Hired Murray Gell-Mann. In the first century BC the Romans built a military limes-camp on a place of great strategic value because of the surrounding hills which gave a good view over the Rhine valley. By 69 a village called 'Oppidum Batavorum' had formed near the Roman camp where 'Legio X Gemina' was stationed. The settlement around the camp received in 98 A.D. Roman city rights. In 104 the Emperor Trajan renamed the town 'Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum' better known as 'Noviomagus'. In the 8th century Nijmegen was part of the empire of Charlemagne. The Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Fredericus II granted Nijmegen city rights in 1230. In 1364 Nijmegen became part of the Hanseatic League. During the Eighty Year's War of Independence a revolt against the souvereign of the Netherlands the King of Spain which lasted from 1568 till 1648 the city belonged to the Republic of United Provinces and had to endure multiple sieges. ‎1847 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT INTRACONTINENTAL TRAVEL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG WOMAN TRAVELING FROM NORWICH TO NEW YORK TO CLEVELAND TO PHILADELPHIA TO NEW YORK ALL BY THE CANAL NETWORK ESTABLISHED IN THE PRIOR 20 YEARS‎

‎NORWICH CONNECTICUT INTRA CONTINENTAL USA. Good. 1847. On offer is a rare handmade travel journal dating from early 19th century America. The paper volume is composed of 16 pages hand stitched inside a heavier paper cover. The small volume is in good condition and all pages are intact. There is some discolouration due to age but it does not affect the handwriting. The volume measures 6.5 inches by 4.25 inches and is approximately 50% complete. The journal is written in 1847 by a woman named Betsy Allen. Her home is recorded as Norwich which could refer to Norwich CT as her journey begins by travelling to New York City. Allen travelled in a great loop from New York City up the Hudson River and into the Erie Canal. She passed through Buffalo and sailed on to Cleveland OH. From Cleveland she travelled south by canal boat to Ellsworth OH arriving on July 22th. She stayed in Ellsworth until Oct 19th. Daily entries often take the form of a single line or comment: "Left Norwich landing for New York sailed all day slow and sure come to New York" July 7; "7 o'clock came to Rochester" July 16; ". went into Capt Allen's boat Buffalo early in morning" July 19; "50� sail out for Cleveland" July 20; On Oct 19th she left Ellsworth in the company of her father and 5 other women and began a remarkable trip back to the east coast via the Ohio and Pennsylvania canal systems. This canal route was a complex transportation system that included canals dams locks tow paths aqueducts and viaducts. Construction of this network began in the early 1820's and continued for the next several decades. She travelled through places like Petersburgh Bridgewater and Lowry. Eventually she reached Pittsburgh. From Pittsburgh she followed the canal through places like Johnstown and Holidaysburgh crossing over the Juniata River by means of a rope ferry. She crossed the Susquehanna River by an aqueduct eventually arriving at Philadelphia after passing through Harrisburg. At Philadelphia she boarded a steam ship for New York City and then Norwich on Oct 27th. She offers more details in her comments during this portion of her trip: "Left Ellsworth for home. Got a cup of coffee and dinner at Mr. Speers in Petersburgh . put up early at Mr.Wells four miles from Bridgewater fare not very good" Oct 19; ". passed through 16 locks in the forenoon. Nothing particular this afternoon only the passage through the tunnel this is a piece of art." Oct 21; ". crossed the Juniata while eating by means of a rope ferry" Oct 23. This is an absolutely fascinating journey and her description spare at times provides an excellent catalogue of the canals and locks that she traversed. It is all the more remarkable because this is a woman making the trip and she obviously came from a family with the means to afford such a trip. By 1900 the canals essentially ceased to operate as railroads took over as the preferred way to move people and goods. However the canals played a vital role in opening up the interior to move settlers west and bring raw materials and crops east to the growing cities of New York and Philadelphia.
