‎HATCH Rufus 1832 93‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed‎

‎This entrepreneur first became a successful Chicago grain broker before becoming one of the founding members of the Chicago Board of Trade but his Wall Street speculations made him a wealthy man in New York where his plentiful and good-humored letters published in newspapers across the country earned him wider fame and the moniker "Uncle Rufus." ALS 4pp 4" X 7" New York NY 1873 September 24. Addressed "To his Excellency / The President of the U.S." Ulysses S. Grant. Fair only. Though fairly legible for the most part the letter is heavily age toned and worn spotted and soiled. Despite rough condition this letter is an outstanding example of the bold and popular style of "Uncle Rufus" and was penned just a few days after the stock market crash of September 18 caused by excessive speculation in Northern railroad construction that followed the Civil War -- a trend of which Hatch was a leading proponent. This "Panic of 1873" hit Hatch himself hard; his reputed $1 million worth dropped by nearly 75% though he supposedly made good on his $600000 indebtedness. This panic marked the start of the "Long Depression" -- two decades of a weak uncertain economy. Hatch here advises the president -- who he knew personally having taken him members of his cabinet and 300 other guests on a 2-day round-trip New York/Newport cruise aboard the new steamer owned by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company which Hatch served as director not long before -- what to do in this new crisis: "I beg leave respectfully to submit the following proposition for the financial relief of the country. 1st In order to prevent inflation 2ndly To prevent any advance on the Gold prime and 3rdly To prevent any disturbance in Exchanges between the United States and Europe and 4thly That our exports may continue. Deposit $10000000 Gold & $10000000 Greenbacks in New York banks. Receive joint clearing house receipts as security. The Security is good. Loan any part of the $44000000 Greenbacks on any government bonds at par on $10000 multiplied. The people have paid 100 on the upon which this proposition in based. When the Government needed $2000000.000 as a military necessity the banks were trusted from $50000000 to $150000000 why not trust them now to the extent of $20000000 to save the country from financial ruin" Signs off "Respectfully" large and bold. President Grant did not take Hatch's advise instead contracting the money supply which caused interest rates to rise and worsened the situation for those such as Hatch who were in debt. A fascinating and scarce piece. unknown‎

‎Native American Portraits 1862-1918‎

‎Chronicle Books 1990 Over one hundred photographs from the renowned Kurt Koegler collection of Native American portraits taken between the end of the Civil War and the end of World War I are featured in this powerful compendium depicting a proud and defeated people. Native American Portraits presents a factual anecdotal and visual history of the evolving artistry and technology of a century of photographers as well as of the tribes whose vanishing trappings and traditions they sought to capture with their craft. The photographers -- William Henry Jackson Camillus Fly Carleton Watkins and Lee Moorhouse among scores of others -- were intrepid adventurers fiercely committed to their work who hauled hundreds of pounds of photographic equipment across the mountains and faced many dangers; their subjects -- including such important warriors as Sitting Bull Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Red Cloud Geronimo and Chief Gall who led the Indians to victory against Custer -- appear venerable dignified and beaten. Fascinating and provocative this richly illustrated and painstakingly annotated volume documents the intersection of photography in its infancy and Native American culture in precipitous decline. Blank stickers inside cover Chronicle Books paperback‎

‎HATTIE CARNES‎

‎1869 SUPER ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT EUROPEAN TRAVEL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY THE EXCEEDINGLY BRIGHT YOUNG GIRL WHO IS THE NIECE AND WARD OF HER FAMOUS AMERICAN ARTIST UNCLE‎

‎Italy. Good. 1869. On offer is an original manuscript travel journal of a young woman who is closely related to two of America's significant art figures of the 19th Century. Measuring 6 inches by 3.5 inches the journal contains 60 pages. It is approximately 66 percent complete. The covers and pages are in good condition. However several pages are loose within the journal. The handwriting is legible. The journal is a record of Hattie Carne's trip to Italy in 1869. Hattie Carnes was born in 1858. She and her brother were orphaned after her father died in 1860 and her mother in 1863. She was raised by her uncle and aunt Henry Grant DeForest and his wife Julia. They were a very prosperous New York family. Both her uncle Frederic Edwin Church and de Forest's son Lockwood de Forest were prominent artists. In 1868 de Forest took his family on an extended tour of Europe. On that tour they were frequently joined by Hattie's uncle Frederic Church. Hattie was 11 at the time and has obviously been well-schooled. This is the journal she kept. The journal is chock full of the details of each day's exploring. The diary begins Mar 15th 1869 after they have been in Europe for several months. Keep in mind these are the words and descriptions of an 11 year old. Describing a museum she visited she wrote: ". we went to the room where they keep their most precious things. There were necklaces earrings bracelets and perfume bottles. And beautiful silver mirrors. Ivory images covered with gold and painted. . " Mar 20. As they tour she visits galleries and museums soaking up the aesthetic delights that served her uncle Frederic and her cousin Lockwood so very well. "I think I have seen and done quite enough today. In the morning I stayed at home and in the afternoon I went to the museum with Aunt Julia. We saw the statues and frescoes but it would be impossible to tell about each 1 only. " Mar 22. She then goes on to try to enumerate them in detail. "Went in the morning to church & in the afternoon to the tomb of philopapus" Apr 11. For an art historian this is an excellent view of what were considered 'must see' cultural / artistic exhibits. Considering that she was living in and amongst two of America's great artists this also offers an insight into what was considered important within their artistic circle. A social historian would certainly be able to compare the lifestyle and quality of life of this girl relative to that experienced by the vast majority of girls her age in the United States at this time.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5" - 6" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; 19TH CENTURY; HATTIE CARNES; HARRIET CARNES; FREDERIC EDWIN CHURCH LOCKWOOD DE FOREST; HENRY GRANT DE FOREST; TRAVEL JOURNALS; TRAVELOGUES; AMERICAN TRAVELERS IN ITALY; ITALY IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY; YOUNG GIRL'S DIARY; AMERICAN ARTISTS IN THE MID 19TH CENTURY; TRAVEL DIARIES; ITALIAN MUSEUMS; EUROPEAN TRIPS IN 19TH CENTURY; AMERICAN ARTISTS IN EUROPE; EUROPE IN 1860TH; HUDSON RIVER SCJHOOL ARTISTS PERSONAL LIFE; AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

There are many many family pictures There is no identifying notations and as the pictures are glued to the page it is impossible to know if there is any identifying information on the reverse. They depict a range of scenes: a typical prairie sod home feeding livestock enjoy recreation activities such as fishing swimming and picnics. There are a great many group pictures. They show a family that enjoyed each others company and came together often. Several show streetscapes of what is likely Caron SK with its dusty main street and boardwalks. Another shows they archetypical prairie scene of a grain elevator. Of interest as well are two items that refer to WWI. The first is a picture of a young man in uniform. The second is a clipping of a newspaper photo of a young soldier Pvt Kelly Roseborough Private Kelby Roseboro. On the picture under the heading Victim of Submarine is the pencil notation Llandovery Castle. The Llandovery Castle was a Canadian Hospital ship that was torpedoed June 27th 1918 by the German submarine SM-U86. Full of wounded soldiers the submarine crew then machine gunned the survivors in the water to hide their crime. It was the worst Canadian naval disaster and was recognized as the worst atrocity in WWI. Two crew were convicted in what were the first war crimes trials ever held Leipzig while the Captain fled to resurface in WWII not surprisingly as a Nazi U-Boat officer. This is an outstanding look at life in a small rural Canadian community in the early 20th century. For a rural history it is a super collection. Good . 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. ‎Hattie Summer‎

‎CURIOUS ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN 1876 JOURNAL OF ONE WOMANS TRIP ALONE TO THE WORLDS FAIR CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION IN PHILADELPHIA AND ALL THE AMAZING SIGHTS AND FASCINATING INVENTIONS SEEN‎

‎PHILADELPHIA PA PENNSYLVANIA BURLINGTON VT VERMONT. Good. 1876. On offer is a wonderful and exciting handwritten diary of Hattie Summer a young woman from the Northeast United States as she visits the Worlds Fair Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. The diary is signed on the front cover Hattie L. Summer Burlington Vermont. Sept. 19. 1876. Beginning on the first page are Summers Notes on the Centennial. The diary reads less like a narrative of a trip than an exhaustive list and description of all sights seen in the Centennial Exhibition. The diary begins with a two page list of sights seen in the Main Building and then includes the sights seen in all man different countries pavilions. A typical entry reads like this: Main Building. Model of Hamburg Steamship. Model of man-of-war. Piece of iron ore: weight 70 stone 66% iron. No. 486. Model. Immense mirror - glass frame glass. First glass made in America. This list goes on for another two pages. For Japan she writes Animals wrought with needle work. Old school house. Nos - 252 260 280 pictures. Picture with fish and sticks with heads on. Scene at autumn - on needle work; price $20. Scene in the winter. Moonlight picture. Sorke wrought in silk from S. Shobeys store at Yokohama. Photos with moonlight effect. Beautiful silks very costly. Grand fire-scene of silk representing bride & flowers. Elegant felts S. Shobeys silk store. This entry also continues for a number of pages. It seems Hattie Summer is much less interested in other countries as they are much less described: South Australia. Silver mounted Emu ink-stand.; China. Pagoda. Elegantly carved furniture and arch-way. ; Peru. Large picture of a party dancing. Ancient pottery. ; Denmark. Sledge. After visiting the Main Building and the pavilions of over 20 countries from around the world she visits the Art Gallery where she encounters and lists a tremendous amount of art from familiar countries such as England Canada France and Germany and a large amount of paintings and sculptures from the United States. Again the artworks are listed. They are not described in any figurative or personal detail. The artworks follow the Centennial theme as many of the paintings seen have such titles as The Landing of Columbus The Discovery of America by Columbus and The Signing of the Declaration of Independence. From the Art Gallery she moves on to the Agricultural Hall. U.S. Department. Here she sees A whale-boat. Walrus. Stuffed. Elephant Seal. Saws of a whale. Tusk of narwhale. Goat. Large deer. Caribou. Beaver. Indian dug-out canoe 60 ft. long 8 ft. deck from Vancouver. Florida Crocodile. and many other natural oddities and curiosities. Finally she lists the sights seen in the Machinery Hall. These include The corliss Engine. A watch 218 years old. Ethan Allens watch. Identical suit worn by Capt. Paul Boynton where he swam the English Channel May 28 1875. The manufacturing of carpets paper envelopes type printing silk handkerchiefs etc. An ice-boat. Large cannon. The very last entry is titled In Miscellaneous Places. and only contains one item: The first train of cars made & run in this country. Washington coach. Background - International Exhibition of Arts Manufactures and Products of the Soil and Mine it was held in Fairmount Park along Philadelphia's Schuylkill River on fairgrounds designed by Herman J. Schwarzmann. It was held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. Nearly 10 million visitors attended the exhibition and thirty-seven countries participated in it. More than 200 buildings were constructed within the Exposition's grounds which were surrounded by a fence nearly three miles long.8 There were five main buildings in the exhibition. They were the Main Exhibition Building Memorial Hall Machinery Hall Agricultural Hall and Horticultural Hall. Apart from these buildings there were separate buildings for state federal foreign corporate and public comfort buildings. This strategy of numerous buildings in one exposition set it apart from the previous fairs around the world that relied exclusively on having one or a few large buildings.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF WORLDS FAIR CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION PHILADELPHIA WORLDS FAIR AMERICA AT 100 YEARS BURLINGTON VERMONT PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF ARTS MANUFACTURES AND PRODUCTS OF THE SOIL AND MINE YOUNG WOMAN TRAVELLING EXPOS EXPOSITIONS AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL AMERICANA ANTIQUIT CONTRAT VLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎
