‎HUET PD. P. D.‎

‎Histoire du commerce et de la navigation des anciens. Par M. Huet ancien Evque d'Avranches sous-Prcepteur de feu Mr. le Dauphin & l'un des quarante de l'Acadmie Franoise. Seconde dition revue.‎

‎Paris Chez Antoine-Urbain Coustelier 1716. 8vo. XXIV44650 index p. Old marbled boards. 17 cm Ref: Sandys 2292/3 Details: Margins uncut woodcut illustration on the title Condition: Binding worn. Back faded. 2 old paper labels on the back. Library stamp on the title Note: The French cleric and scholar Pierre Daniel Huet 1630-1721 was coadjutor in the tuition of the Grand Dauphin the son of Louis XIV future king. He was also general editor and organiser of the wellknown series of Delphin Classics. Among patrologists he is best known for his edition in 1668 in Rouen of Origenes' 'Commentaria in Sacras Scripturas'. In the preface to this history of ancient commerce Huet explains that it was commissioned by 'monsieur Colbert ministre et scretaire d'tat'. Il ne falloit pas Monsieur une autorit moindre que la vtre pour me faire quitter les autres tudes qui m'occupent . pour en entreprendre une autre si differente & vous rapporter l'Histoire du Commerce & de la Navigation des Anciens'. Colbert did so Huet tells in his quality of 'Intendant general du Commerce & de la Navigation de ce France Royaume'. Prface p. 1/2 Colbert 1619-1683 who was a kind of minister of Finance improved the state of French manufacturing and brought the economy back from the brink of bankruptcy during the rule of king Louis XIV who fought many expensive wars. Colbert succeeded in creating a favourable balance of trade and in increasing France's colonial holdings. Colbert saw that if his country wanted to compete with the Dutch Republic and England he had to promote French industry and commerce. He worked 'to ensure that the French East India Company had access to foreign markets so that they could always obtain coffee cotton dyewoods fur pepper and sugar. In addition Colbert founded the French merchant marine'. Wikipedia Colbert died in 1683 and Huet's histoire was only published in 1716 33 years after his death by the Parisian publisher Franois Fournier who owned according to the 'Extrait du Privilege du Roy' the right to print this title. He apparantly gave his colleague Antoine-Urbaine Coustelier permission to publish another edition. At the end of the 'Privilge du Roy' has been added 'Imprim pour la seconde fois le 1. Sept. 1716'. p. b4 verso In the 'avertissement du libraire' immediately after the title the publisher confesses that monsieur Huet then 86 years old thought this work 'si peu convenable son ge & la profession' that he wanted it rather to lay buried in dust on the shelves in his 'cabinet' than publish it. It was only after the prayers of his friends lovers of literature and supporters of the interest of the state that he gave permission to publish this work of his youth. p. a1 recto & verso Huet apparantly took the trouble to revise his work and prepare it for an second edition. It was a success. It was reissued in France in 1727 and 1763 translated into English 1717 German 1763 & 1775 and Italian 1737 Provenance: Stamp on the title: 'Ex bibliotheca Comit. de Krassow-Divitz'. This book probably comes from the library of Karl Reinhard Adolph Graf von Krassow 1812-1892. There may however be other members of this noble family who once owned this book Collation: a8 b4; A-2H8 Photographs on request hardcover‎

The journal while not very long contains significant handwritten personal accounts; the yellow fever plague of 1871 and a notorious major diplomatic incident the 1873 Virginius Affair between the Spanish British and Americans during the 10 years war. In fact the rear cover is a title page from a U.S Dept of State publication regarding the Affair. In all there are a total of 15 pages of narrative and letter copies and six pages of press clippings for the most part regarding the 1871 yellow fever outbreak in the Argentine. Macdonell begins recounting his career: how in 1850 he was quartered at Williamstown Cape of Good Hope in charge of a draft of discharged men when he sustained a wound trying to rescue another man. In 1861 he was sent to Herzegovina and Bosnia to make a report; in 1869 he was appointed secretary of legation in Buenos Ayres also travelling to Uruguay "where civil war was devastating the country". "English vessels were arbitrarily seized and British property destroyed - there being no telegraph with Britain I had to act on my own responsibility.having been appealed to by British residents and the contending parties to mediate". This was apparently only partially successful though he did obtain compensation for destroyed property and the release of vessels. He then states: "In 1871 a most devastating yellow fever epidemic broke out" which is then detailed in five pages of letters from Macdonell printed in a contemporary newspaper. There then follow eleven pages of handwritten copies of letters to and from Macdonell. Here are some snippets: "B. Ayres Aug 1 1871 - Sir we feel it incumbent upon us after the sad ordeal through which this city has passed to express to you our high appreciation of your noble and determined conduct during the late visitation of yellow fever. In that distressing period when the mortality rose to such a height that the piles of coffins encumbered the graveyards waiting their turn for interment; when panic had seized every individual when friend deserted friend relative relatives - all who could fled the deserted city of the dead. Through all this like a good soldier you remained firm at your post". He writes that in November 1871 he obtained from the government of Montevideo payment of a debt contracted between that government and the British in 1834. The settlement of this claim apparently led to the breaking of all relations between the Montevideo government and the British government. In 1873 he was then involved in events leading up to the Virginius affair a diplomatic dispute that occurred from October 1873 to February 1875 between the United States Great Britain and Spain then in control of Cuba during the ten years war. In 1873 a British Yacht the Deerhound was seized by the Spanish who accused it of carrying insurgents - Macdonell was central from the British side in the diplomatic settlement. Similarly in late 1873 the Virginius an American ship carrying Cuban insurrectionists was seized by the Spanish and the Spanish began executing those on board as pirates. This is touched upon and Macdonnel seems to have had some involvment in the settlement. There are copies of letters from Lord Granville Lord Hammond and Earl Derby to Macdonell regarding this series of incidents. The 8 x 5.5 inch journal with blue paper covers marked 'Personal HGMacdonell' is overall G. BIO NOTES: from one online source: Rt. Hon. ‎HUGH OTTO WILLIAMS‎

‎1941 - 1942 EXCEPTIONAL RELIC OF WORLD WAR TWO FLIGHT AND PILOT TRAINING BEING AN ORIGINAL DIARY OF A YOUNG CADET AS HE MAKES HIS WAY WITH TREMENDOUS DETERMINATION TO BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR HIMSELF ONLY NINE MONTHS AFTER HIS OWN INSTRUCTION‎

‎AIR CORPS BASIC FLYING SCHOOL GUNTER FIELD. Very Good. 1941. On offer are two detailed and fascinating diaries of the early years of World War II told from the perspective of flight cadet and later Lieutenant and instructor Hugh Otto Williams. The books arent diaries exactly but books in which Williams wrote down the letters he sent to his brother Toby Williams of Kings Mountain North Carolina. The first diary depicts the daily life of Williams as a U.S. Air Corps flying cadet in training at the Mississippi Institute of Aeronautics in Jackson Mississippi. This diary goes from January to August 1941. The second diary follows Williams as a flight instructor at the Air Corps Basic Flying School at Gunter Field later Shaw Field in Montgomery Alabama. It goes from September 1941 to July 1942. In the beginning of the first diary Williams is a brand new cadet having just arrived in Jackson Mississippi. He describes in excellent detail what it was like to learn how to fly the difficulties the instructors written and physical exams the routines and drills that would make him a pilot. Along with the flying comes the rules regulations exercises inspections and all the other realities of learning to be a soldier and pilot. Only 25 days after he first arrives at the base after passing tests and exams and drills he solos supervised for the first time. I soloed - yes all by myself - it did make me feel good. It is an almost indescribable feeling to be up there by yourself. Funny it didnt scare me one bit. In fact I kinda had a feeling of peace as soon as I got off the ground. Williams talks about almost every single time he flies up in the hour what it was like what he did what he learned etc. In February he is flying all by himself in the plane and continuing to learn more and more. He comments that a large number of cadets have failed tests and washed out meaning they were not good enough to continue. By February there are only 40 or so cadets left out of an initial 92. He graduates in March and moves to Gunter Field in Montgomery Alabama as part of class 41-F. His instructor here is a Lt. McIntyre A southerner and seemed to be awfully nice and later a Lt. Salisbury. The planes at Gunter Field are different as well: There ships sure are lots different from what we have been flying. More instruments that you can shake a stick at. Sure will be lots of things to remember to do. They have two-way radio sets - wireless and all that. We take off and land only with permission of the Field Tower. The ships are lots larger than the others. I am really interested in getting started. The ships he is flying at Gunter are called BT-13s. At Gunter Field Williams is still a cadet and more training is done both flying and learning on the ground. In one instance he takes off on a routine training flight that turns into a difficult and almost harrowing experience as there are problems as gale force winds make flying tremendously difficult for Williams and Williams has to be given detailed instructions on how to land the plane. A small newspaper clipping is pasted in on the next page: Gunter Drama: Radio Saves 105 Cadets. In April a newspaper clipping about Williams in pasted in: Local Boy Soon To Graduate In Air Corps. He does just that and moves to Maxwell Field in Montgomery. Still part of Class 41-F Squadron H. At Maxwell Field Williams is at the Advanced Flying school. The diary ends in August as Williams finishes his Advanced Flying course with a day-night long distance trip of hundreds of miles. The second diary in begins with Williams now a Lieutenant and instructing at Gunter Field at the Air Corps Basic Flying School where he had started flying only 9 months beforehand. The letters focus on the students that Williams is in charge of 4 in total and the progress that they make or dont. In January 1942 Williams moves to Shaw Field in Gunter South Carolina and is in charge of six students from six different states. Again he speaks often and candidly of his students progress and difficulties. In July he is made Assistant Commanding Officer for a new flying class coming into the Basic Flying School. Finally in July the last entry is written. Maxwell Field. Central Instructors School. Montgomery Alabama. Williams is at the school to learn more about Flight instruction. The diary ends with 21 black-and-white photographs of Williams a woman who seems to be his girlfriend or wife and a few of the faces of friends or family. Most of the photographs are labelled with the date they were taken and the location. The diaries also contain bits of ephemera as well. These include: Grade school report cards for Williams in 1932 and 1933 Army cards signifying the completion of various courses in Flight School a membership card to The Officers Club and Mess at Maxwell Field Alabama a pamphlet for the Air Corps Training Detachment Mississippi Institute of Aeronautics Graduation Dinner Dance of the Class of 41-E and various photographs of Williams from the time period. The two diaries are in good condition. Both covers are free of any major wear. The pages within are almost all still in good condition without much discoloration or rips/tears. The handwriting throughout is easily legible and readable in black ink. All photographs loose or pasted in are still in very good condition. The first diary is approximately 200 pages and the second diary is approximately 150. The books measure about: 4 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches. OVERALL: VG. Text: January 1 1941. This place is completely out in the country not even a country store! NOthing but the post. Every building is brand new and it is really nice. The first day we were issued flying equipment which is really the stuff - they issue to each man about $200.00 worth of equipment namely: A fur-lined jacket fur lined pants and shoes all leather on the outside. Helmet and goggles. Three pairs of coveralls jeans gloves and a mechanic's cap. So much in fact that a person dont need except underwear and toilet articles. They vaccinated us for smallpox and typhoid in the same arm.We have a nameplate that we have to wear on our coveralls. It starts off one color and you have to polish it until it turns to another color. It took me all morning.; January 11 1941. The flying would be swell if it wasnt for the Instructor. He told me yesterday that it would be a miracle if I ever learned to fly. But just between you and me I think I am pretty good. He has three of us. He takes us up one at a time. After all of us have been up we have a sort of conference going over our mistakes for the day. I dont catch near as much on the ground as the other two do. I like to fly! I have four hours to my credit now. Am supposed to be able to solo in four more - that is if I ever solo!.We started off learning to do 90 turns. Climbing turns. 180 turns. 360 turns etc. Then we had to learn to follow a rectangle on the ground. That is you pick out a rectangular figure on the ground such as roads fences or something. Use a tree or something for a corner. Sounds easy. Would be if it wasnt for the wind. You have to figure that on it will blow you off course. All kind of stuff like that.; July 24 1941. I have completed my last flight in Advanced flying. Now I am supposed to be ready for bigger better and faster ships. It sure is a great relief to know I have actually finished - and I can brag a little with the few that all during my Cadet-training of over 200 hours I have even put a scratch on a plane. Our Squadron took our day-night cross-country yesterday. We flew from Maxwell to Nashville to Chattanooga. A distance of 390 miles where we landed ate supper and waited for it to get dark. Then after dark we flew from Chattanooga to Atlanta to Maxwell. It was a real nice trip. Beautiful weather. The mountains sure did look good from the air.I was Officer of the Day yesterday and today until 11:30 AM got out of a lot of the work due to the Cross-Country.; September 23 1941. I started instructing today. Two British and two Americans. It is a funny thing. Both the Americans primaryed at M.I.A. One even had Mr. Firpprecht as an instructor. So far I havent ridden with my students because today they had a cross-country trip and since they fly these in loose formation My students went with another flight. I was assigned to squadron 4 which at the present is the under class or class 42-A. They have about 35 hours. Sure am glad they let me start with an experienced class. They at least know what it is all about and maybe wont scare me too bad right at first.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF FLIGHT CADET HUGH OTTO WILLIAMS HUGH O. ‎HUGH SMITH‎

‎1861 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN LETTER DETAILING TIME SPENT IN A GROWING MID-19th CENTURY TORONTO REMARKING ON ITS PEOPLE FASHION AND LANDMARKS‎

‎TORONTO ONTARIO CANADA 1861. On offer is a remarkable letter from a loving husband to his wife written from a man travelling in Toronto back to his wife in England. The letter is a fascinating snapshot of a foreigner in Toronto in the mid-19th century. Obviously far from home the sender Mr. Hugh Smith finds the city beautiful and amazing and shares it ecstatically with his wife. The letter however begins on a somber note. You have no doubtedly before this time read a letter from George informing you of your fathers death. He suffered greatly he explains of an ulceration of the stomach and was miserable for a day before his death. He is in the cemetery in the city - a tombstone was put up yesterday upon his grave. The letter then makes a quick turn. I am in great health and I feel as if the journey has done me a great deal of good. Hugh then describes the Toronto he currently inhabits. The splendid affair of a devotion to the cultivation of fruit trees and the University where he saw a great collection of such quadrupeds four foot animals. He finds Toronto to be a beautiful and interesting city. Then the letter focuses on the women in the city and the fashion that Mr. Smith finds so curious including bonnets of undescribable shapes and veils that reach in some cases down to the nose. Mr. Smith finds the shapes colors and patterns of the fashion to be striking and unusual. Finally Mr. Smith wraps up with pleasantries to his loving wife and children and signs the letter your corny husband Hugh Smith. The letter is a great example of how Toronto was seen through foreign eyes in the mid-19th century and would make a great part of a collection on the growing metropolitan city. The letter is in good condition showing minimal wear or discoloration. There are a few small tears and spots of discoloration along the creases. There is a bit more noticeable discoloration on the back page but it does not affect the legibility of the writing. Any tears do not affect the structural integrity of the letter which is still held together very well. The handwriting is legible throughout in unfaded black ink. The letter is four pages long. Background: In 1861 the population of Toronto was 65085. Good. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Manuscript. paperback‎
