De Nederlandse regering in ballingschap in Londen had behoefte aan het instellen van dapperheidsonderscheidingen voor krijgsverrichtingen waarvoor de Militaire Willemsorde in wezen niet verleend kon worden. Zo werd in 1940 het Bronzen Kruis ingesteld in twee gradaties met en zonder eervolle vermelding. Deze onderscheiding werd verleend aan militairen maar later ook aan koopvaardijpersoneel en andere burgers die hiervoor in aanmerking kwamen. De Bronzen Leeuw werd in 1944 ingesteld als vervanger van het Bronzen Kruis met eervolle vermelging waardoor de Bronzen Leeuw na de Militaire Willemsorde de belangrijkste Nederlandse dapperheidsonderscheiding werd gevolgd door het Bronzen Kruis. In deze uitgave worden alle gedecoreerden Bronzen Leeuw en Bronzen Kruis genoemd met details met betrekking tot hun rang functie en legeronderdeel.
