Esso fornisce una descrizione organica ed unica del mondo della tromba nel periodo barocco visto con gli occhi di chi ne sta vivendo l'irreversibile trasformazione. Il lettore trova in quest'opera informazioni sulla tromba dalle sue origini fino al XVIII secolo; sui trombettisti; sulla teoria della musica riferita alla tromba; sul metodo di insegnamento tutt'ora valido; sullo stile d'esecuzione della musica barocca con relativi brani esemplificativi ed infine sulla relazione tra trombe e timpani. Altenburg si sofferma anche sugli aspetti normativi e sociali del mondo della tromba legandoli ai cambiamenti in atto al termine del periodo barocco. Egli riafferma il ruolo fondamentale delle corporazioni e del Privilegio Imperiale, descrivendoli in modo assai completo e fornendo inoltre informazioni dettagliate sui diritti e doveri dei trombettisti; sui loro requisiti fisici e morali; sul comportamento e abbigliamento richiesto sul lavoro e fuori; sulla retribuzione e dotazione. Queste informazioni permettono al lettore di comprendere la solidità della struttura delle corporazioni dei trombettisti del Sacro Romano Impero.

C'è di più: in ogni cultura le persone cantano (e danzano) insieme, ed in ogni società una delle principali funzioni della musica è collettiva e comunitaria, basata sul vincolo interpersonale che essa è in grado di generare. Negli ultimi decenni, inoltre, sono apparsi sempre più evidenti gli effetti benefici della musica impiegata come mezzo terapeutico e riabilitativo in bambini e adolescenti con diversa abilità, oltre che in numerosi disturbi neurologici e psichiatrici. As Glenn Altschuler reveals in All Shook Up, the rise of rock 'n roll-and the outraged reception to it-in fact can tell us a lot about the values of the United States in the 1950s, a decade that saw a great struggle for the control of popular culture. Altschuler shows, in particular, how rock's "switchblade beat" opened up wide fissures in American society along the fault-lines of family, sexuality, and race. For instance, the birth of rock coincided with the Civil Rights movement and brought "race music" into many white homes for the first time. Elvis freely credited blacks with originating the music he sang and some of the great early rockers were African American, most notably, Little Richard and Chuck Berry. In addition, rock celebrated romance and sex, rattled the reticent by pushing sexuality into the public arena, and mocked deferred gratification and the obsession with work of men in gray flannel suits. And it delighted in the separate world of the teenager and deepened the divide between the generations, helping teenagers differentiate themselves from others. Altschuler includes vivid biographical sketches of the great rock 'n rollers, including Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Buddy Holly-plus their white-bread doppelgangers such as Pat Boone. Rock 'n roll seemed to be everywhere during the decade, exhilarating, influential, and an outrage to those Americans intent on wishing away all forms of dissent and conflict. As vibrant as the music itself, All Shook Up reveals how rock 'n roll challenged and changed American culture and laid the foundation for the social upheaval of the sixties.

To a "Cher Maître", possibly Jules Massenet, writing in support of his former professor at the Paris conservatory Auguste de Martini, who had applied for an unspecified position. Alvarez wrote the beautiful letter in the aftermath of an event with the recipient and Auguste de Martini, which he had missed: "J'ai beaucoup regretté n'avoir pu venir vous voir avec Monsieur de Martini hier. J'ai été prévenu trop dard de l'heure de sa visite. Mais ce que je n'ai pu faire de vive voix, hier, je me permets de vous l'écrire, vosu sachant très occupé en ce moment: Monsieur de Martini, vous ne l'ignorez pas, mon cher Maître, a été mon professeur. C'est dans sa direction que j'ai fait mes études vocales et musicales. Je lui dois beaucoup. Or, je serais heureux de le voir placé au poste qu'il sollocote et qui lui revient si bien par sa haute valeur et ses brillantes qualités artisitques. Je prends donc la liberté, mon cher Maître, de recommander à votre bienvaillante attention la candidature de mon professeur, heureux et fier si vous voulez bien faire cas et si elle peut être de quelque utilité à Monsieur de Martini [...]". - Albert Raymond Alverez made his operatic debut as Faust in Ghent in 1887. His Paris debut was again Faust in 1892. In 1894 he created the role of Nicias in Jules Massenet's "Thaïs". - The possible identification of the recipient with Massenet is based on a collector's note in pencil. With a deep tear to the fold slightly affecting the text.
