BURNET, Dana, words by, and James H Rogers, music by
Sheet music: War
Boston: Oliver Ditson Company 1915. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Folio. Single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Owner name and music shop stamp on the front cover foxing to the exterior and minor edgewear still a complete and very good copy. For low voice and piano. Plate number 5-121-70708-3. Though the lyrics to this piece do not explicitly relate to WWI the timing of its publication makes its connection clear. Especially interesting is its subtle connection in theme to a famous novel that would be written about The Great War All Quiet on the Western Front; just as Paul Bäumer returns to his family's comfortable home while on leave and takes stark notice of the absurd contrast of the still existent quiet domesticity taking place while his fellow soldiers continue to suffer in the hell of the trenches so does Burnet highlight this juxtaposition "Sword-song and battle roar and the great grim fighting line!/And what of the woman in the door and the blown grape on the vine." BURNS, Roberty, words by, and William Shore, music by
Sheet music: O Willie Brew'd a Peck O'Maut: A Glee for Three Voices
London: John Blockley no date. Softcover. Good. Unknown edition. Transcribed for the piano by Jules Favre. Folio. 9pp. Printed wrappers. A contemporary stitched cloth repair along the entirety of the spine six tape repairs to the front wrapper soiling throughout though most severe on the front wrapper edgewear and a burn mark on the bottom of the front wrapper affecting throughout a complete but good only copy. For three voices alto tenor and bass and piano. Plate imprint "O! Willie brew'd - in E flat." "The music composed in imitation of the Scottish melody and dedicated to The Amateur Glee & Catch Club Manchester" from the front wrapper. Glee and catch clubs were popular from the late 18th century into the Victorian era and are considered to be distinctly English forms of composition and performance; glees are part songs written for multiple voices as are catches though they're typically more humorous in subject and are performed as a round in which two or more voices repeatedly sing the same melody but start at different times "Row Row Row Your Boat" is a famous example. OCLC locates two holdings of this edition. John Blockley unknown
