BURNET, Dana, words by, and James H Rogers, music by
Sheet music: War
Boston: Oliver Ditson Company 1915. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Folio. Single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Owner name and music shop stamp on the front cover foxing to the exterior and minor edgewear still a complete and very good copy. For low voice and piano. Plate number 5-121-70708-3. Though the lyrics to this piece do not explicitly relate to WWI the timing of its publication makes its connection clear. Especially interesting is its subtle connection in theme to a famous novel that would be written about The Great War All Quiet on the Western Front; just as Paul Bäumer returns to his family's comfortable home while on leave and takes stark notice of the absurd contrast of the still existent quiet domesticity taking place while his fellow soldiers continue to suffer in the hell of the trenches so does Burnet highlight this juxtaposition "Sword-song and battle roar and the great grim fighting line!/And what of the woman in the door and the blown grape on the vine." BURNS, Roberty, words by, and William Shore, music by
Sheet music: O Willie Brew'd a Peck O'Maut: A Glee for Three Voices
London: John Blockley no date. Softcover. Good. Unknown edition. Transcribed for the piano by Jules Favre. Folio. 9pp. Printed wrappers. A contemporary stitched cloth repair along the entirety of the spine six tape repairs to the front wrapper soiling throughout though most severe on the front wrapper edgewear and a burn mark on the bottom of the front wrapper affecting throughout a complete but good only copy. For three voices alto tenor and bass and piano. Plate imprint "O! Willie brew'd - in E flat." "The music composed in imitation of the Scottish melody and dedicated to The Amateur Glee & Catch Club Manchester" from the front wrapper. Glee and catch clubs were popular from the late 18th century into the Victorian era and are considered to be distinctly English forms of composition and performance; glees are part songs written for multiple voices as are catches though they're typically more humorous in subject and are performed as a round in which two or more voices repeatedly sing the same melody but start at different times "Row Row Row Your Boat" is a famous example. BURNS, Robert, words by, and William Clifton, music by
Sheet music: My Bonnie Bonnie Dearie: A Favorite Scotch
New York: Atwill's Music Saloon 1836. Softcover. Good. First edition. Large quarto. Originally a single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Bifolium neatly separated but both leaves are present offsetting along the fold of the bifolium from an old tape repair we suspect the piece has been neatly trimmed along the top and bottom to better fit within an album given that sheet music of this era was typically larger and light offsetting throughout a complete but good only copy. For voice and piano. The lyrics to this song are from Robert Burns' poem "Ca' the Yowes to the Knowes" though it is suspected that he more so adapted/altered an existing poem rather than invented it. The poem is written somewhat in a Scottish dialect "We'll gae down by Couden side/Thro' the hazels spreading wide/O'er the waves that sweetly glide/To the moon sae clearly." And it appears very little if anything is known about the composer. An intriguing piece with a lovely engraving on the front cover. Sheet music: Fairest Maid on Devons Banks
Boston: Henry Prentiss 1841. Softcover. Near Fine. First edition. Lithograph by W. & J.C. Sharp. Folio. Two nested bifolia making eight pages. Bifolia notched and lightly worn along their fold from once being bound within an album some light foxing and light soiling throughout but still over all near fine with the music and cover illustration clean and bright. For voice and piano. Plate number 213. This is the only piece of sheet music we have come across to omit the title from the front cover; though beautiful in its clean simplicity this is a strange and unique presentation style for sheet music of any era. Also of note the title here is reproduced exactly as it is printed above the music with no apostrophe in "Devons." OCLC locates only a single holding of this piece and while digital copies are available original copies like this appear to be equally scarce in the trade. A rare and unusual piece. Burroni Francesco
Canti senesi d'osteria
ill., br.
