ril. Ovidio morì duemila anni fa relegato da Augusto sul mar Nero. Non riuscì mai a comprenderne il perché. Forse "Le metamorfosi", il suo più ampio poema, spaventarono il principe: ispirato com'è all'idea, modernissima, che nulla nell'universo è stabile, ma tutto dall'eternità muta e muterà. La materia incessantemente si trasforma, non è stata creata e non si distrugge. Gli dèi divengono uomini, gli uomini dèi, oppure animali, piante, aria, acqua: fiumi, laghi. Il poema è insieme il più grande racconto del mito, di tutti i miti, che la letteratura abbia mai tentato. Nessun poeta, nemmeno Omero e Virgilio, ha tanto ispirato la pittura e la scultura. Ma la dotta lira ha creato musica, da Poliziano a Strauss, attraverso Monteverdi, Cavalli, Scarlatti, Bach, Händel, Pergolesi, Porpora, Dittersdorf, Haydn, Cherubini, Clementi, Berlioz, Liszt, Offenbach, Massenet, e tanti altri, più di ogni altra voce poetica: voce poi echeggiata e variata per l'ultima volta nel Novecento dall'arte di D'Annunzio. Il teatro musicale nasce nel nome di Ovidio, e nei secoli opere, drammi musicali, cantate, sinfonie e concerti traggono alimento dalla sua poesia; poi, dai grandi ritratti di donne eroiche, innamorate, fedeli, infedeli, abbandonate presenti nelle "Metamorfosi" e, con i loro Lamenti, nelle "Eroidi"; dalle favole del calendario pagano nel poema dei Fasti. Apollo, Dafne, Orfeo, Euridice, Arianna, Medea, Teseo, Giunone, Giove, Dioniso, Venere, Amore, Mercurio, Cibele, Latona, Diana, Morfeo, Persefone, Plutone, Pan, Ercole, Fetonte, Atteone, le Baccanti, Perseo, Galatea, Polifemo, Fedra, il Minotauro, Icaro, Glauco, Pigmalione, Danae, Semele, Marsia, Ulisse, sempre rinascono in note. Con loro le favole del caos, della notte, degli inferi, dell'Olimpo, dell'origine dell'universo, del diluvio. Questo libro racconta il mito nella metamorfosi della musica.

br. Paolo Isotta è famoso pur non andando in televisione. È storico della musica e fa il critico musicale al "Corriere della Sera" ma è scrittore completo. Con questo libro fa una summa della sua esperienza umana, prima, artistica, poi. "La virtù dell'elefante" (che è quella di avere una mente robusta per sopportare una mole di sapienza) non è un'autobiografia perché non racconta la vita di Paolo Isotta secondo una sequenza cronologica: la sua vita discende dalla favola di Napoli e dei grandi personaggi, certo non solamente della musica, che egli ha incontrati. Senza aver letto questo libro è impossibile capire che cosa sia Napoli, città che si offre con aspetto lusinghiero e ingannevole, ingannevole nelle prospettive di gioia come nella querimonia perpetua. Qui un napoletano rivela che cosa si nasconda dietro la maschera. Paolo Isotta vive da quasi sessant'anni in simbiosi con la musica. Nessuno può oggi vantare un'esperienza umana e artistica pari alla sua. Così le sue memorie investono una lunghissima serie di colossi, della musica e della vita; ne sono glorificati molti, e richiamati alla mente di un'età atta all'oblio; alcuni falsi miti vengono sfatati. Anche tanti geniali, o non geniali, poveri cristi, di quelli che ogni giorno si arrampicano sugli specchi per sopravvivere; e alcuni esseri furbissimi e cattivi: raccontano le memorie. E le memorie toccano tanto musica e compositori quanto interpreti e interpretazioni.

ril. Quando Verdi conseguì il primo importante successo col "Nabucco", il genere di melodramma che s'era imposto era di origine francese, pur se fondato in prevalenza da italiani: il Grand-Opéra. La creazione di tale modello si deve ai sommi Cherubini, Spontini, Rossini; esso viene raccolto da Auber, Meyerbeer, Halévy, Donizetti. Ma Verdi ha una personalità di ferro. Pur influenzato dai predecessori, adotta il modello quale cornice esterna e lo riempie di contenuti stilistici, drammatici e psicologici soltanto suoi. Poi addirittura lo rovescia. Al tipico, al «caratteristico» e al diversivo sostituisce la sintesi, il nesso e la velocità drammatici. Al carattere stereotipo dei personaggi contrappone la irreproducibilità e la ricerca del Vero drammatico: non imitato bensì trasceso per mezzo dell'arte: la sua formula è «inventare il Vero». In ciò la sua creazione è coerente per decennî. Il suo successo lo fece quasi subito desiderare dall'Opéra di Parigi. Il maestro si concesse di rado a partire dal 1847, ma in francese sono alcuni dei suoi capolavori. Questo libro parte dai rapporti di Verdi con l'Opera francese, la cultura, l'ambiente e la società francesi, per tentare di fare del compositore un ritratto generale, estetico e anche politico: e di molti capolavori in qualche modo connessi con la Francia, a partire dalla "Traviata", fa una distesa narrazione e interpretazione.

2 RARE JOSE ITURBI PROGRAMS FROM THE 1930's: "Teatro de la Comedia: Iturbi con la Orquesta Sinfonica de Madrid" and "'Conciertos Daniel' XXIV Concertio Recital de Piano: El Adios a Mexico de Iturbi Director y Pianista".
Madrid: La Sociedad Musica Daniel 1930's / Mexico City: Printed by El Libro Diario for Sociedad Musical Daniel 1933. 1933. Good. - Two rare programs for concerts conducted from the piano by Jose Iturbi in Madrid and Mexico City under the auspices of Conciertos Daniel.<p>The first performed at the Teatro de la Comedia on October 9th: "Iturbi con la Orquesta Sinfonica de Madrid" is a 6-7/8 inch high by 9-3/4 inch wide broadsheet printed in red & black on the recto with a portrait of Iturbi at top left. On the verso under the "Conciertos Daniel" heading & logo is printed a brief biography of the pianist and conductor Jose Iturbi followed by a price list for various seat locations. The concert a Beethoven Festival includes performances of the Leonore Overture followed by the third piano concerto in C minor and Beethoven's 3rd Symphony. Folded both horizontally & vertically for mailing the broadsheet is slightly soiled with creases to the edges and corners.<p>The second program is for July 21 and July 25 1933 concerts at Mexico City's Teatro Hildago titled "El Adios a Mexico de Iturbi". The 4 page 9-1/8 inch high by 6-5/8 inch wide softcover program is printed in green on buff paper titled with a portrait of Iturbi on the cover page. Under a running title printed across the 2 center pages are the performances which include works by Mozart Beethoven Ravel Liszt & Scarlatti on the 21st and the "Festival Beethoven Orquesta de 100 Profesores" under Iturbi's baton on the 25thwhich includes Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto and his 3rd and 7th Symphonies. A price list according to seating is printed on the last page. Folded both vertically and horizontally with creases to the edges. There are short tears to the inner edge and bottom edge of the pages a tiny chip to the bottom corner and some dark stains to the last page. <p>"Conciertos Daniel" was founded in Berlin in 1908 by Cuban-born impressario Ernesto de Quesada. Originally called "Konzertdirektion H. Daniel" the agency moved to Madrid in 1914 and was renamed "Conciertos Daniel".<p>Now often overlooked Jose Iturbi 1895-1980 was one of the best known pianists of the 1930's and 40's. A virtuoso he was as comfortable playing classical music as he was playing the boogie-woogie. A composer and conductor as well as a musician he often conducted from the piano. A dashing figure he became a film star in the 1940's playing music for and appearing in MGM musicals including Anchors Aweigh. An amateur boxer motorcyclist and pilot Iturbi best summed up his philosophy of life with this statement: "Life is a meal and music is the roast beef. But who can live on only roast beef You must have your brandy and dessert and cigar. And so I must have my boxing and my airplane and my motorcycle." AN ORIGINAL HOLIDAY GREETING CARD SIGNED by the virtuoso pianist JOSE ITURBI with his endearing nickname "PEPIN" together with a calling card and a memorial card plus retained copies of his friend Jean Dalrymple's letters.
1975. 1975. - A 3-3/4 inch high by 5-1/8 inch wide holiday greeting card embossed in red on creamy white stock with red ruled edges. The sentiments "Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season Jose Iturbi" are embossed in red at the center. The pianist has boldly penned "Besos / Pepin / 1975" in blue ink diagonally across the card. "Besos" being Spanish for "kisses" and "Pepin" being the nickname by which his close friend Jean Dalrymple would sometimes address him. Accompanying the card is Iturbi's 2 inch high by 2-7/8 inch wide embossed calling card with his name crossed out and the words "Besos" and "Pepin" typed above and below with the date ""Oct. 20 1967" al;ong the bottom right. Another card this one 2-7/8 inches high by 3-7/8 inches wide commemorates Iturbi's passing with a quote from "Psalm 27:1" "The Lord is my light and my Salvation" above Jose Iturbi's name and his birth and death dates "November 28 1895" and "June 28 1980".<p>The cards are accompanied by retained carbon copies of 2 of Jean Dalrymple's letters to her friend. The first addressed to "Darling Pepin." dives in with "What I was trying to tell you on the telephone the other night is that I am drinking Kefir which is cultured milk made from a culture I brought back from Russia and which comes from the Balkans where they say people live to 150 because they drink Kefir." She goes on to later write "Speaking of piano playing I went to a recital by an old friend of mine who hadn't appeared in public for thirty years. and while it was far from 'good' it was a programme that kept stirring memories! The etude in F Minor was the first one you had me study and the Waltz in C# Minor gave Madge who was with me a fit of giggles since she remembered your version of how I played it!" In her second letter dated November 21 1977 Dalrymple addresses Iturbi as "Darling Jose". She worries about his health "I have been thinking about all the medicines. right ones and wrong ones . you are being given and I wonder if your doctors might let you give them ALL up and give your own nature and strong body a chance to recover. on its own helped only by by sic a cleansing nutritional diet of fruits and vegetables plenty of pure water and herbal teas." Closing with "I love you". Both letters are creased and folded in half.<p>A moving tribute to a close friendship. <p>Now often overlooked Jose Iturbi was one of the best known pianists of the 1930's and 40's. A virtuoso he was as comfortable playing classical music as he was playing the boogie-woogie. A composer and conductor as well as a musician he often conducted from the piano. A dashing figure he became a film star in the 1940's playing music for and appearing in MGM musicals including Anchors Aweigh. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andr Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world. 1975. unknown

<p>New York 1957 / Beverrly Hills CA 1977. 1957 & 1977. 1957 & 1977. Fine. - An octavo 8-5/8 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide soft cover program bound in self-wraps. Illustrated on the front cover the 4-page program is for the "Premiere Performance of The Spanish Opera and Ballet Conducted by Jose Iturbi at City Center in New York on October 16 1957. Fine.</p><p>Together with Jose Iturbi's autograph signed "Pepin" an affectionate diminutive penned for Jean Dalrymple in 1977 on his personal 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide cream stationery with his Beverly Hills California address at the top. Folded for mailing else fine.</p><p>Also included are 2 retained copies of Jean Dalrymple's letters the first dated April 4 1977 is to conductor Andre Previn dated April 4 suggesting that Previn schedule concerts with Iturbi. The second dated April 7 of that year is to Jose Iturbi who she addresses as "Darling Pepin" informing him that she wrote to Previn and that she expects a "nice response from him".</p><p>Jose Iturbi was one of the best known pianists of the 1930's and 40's.
