Sheet music: A Norse Lullaby
New York: Edward Schuberth & Co 1900. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Folio. Single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Edgewear including small tears foxing to the exterior and bumping to the corners still a complete and very good copy. For voice and piano. Plate imprint "C.F.T. No. 285." The front cover states "Dedicated to The Hatfield House" though it is unclear if it is referring to the historical house in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. This piece is unrecorded by OCLC and appears to be equally scarce in the trade; furthermore we could not find any solid biographical information on the composer Morris Ellsworth. There's a chance he's the original composer and subject of a song called "Morzie Ellsworth" about a Mane-ite moving to Pennsylvania to work as a lumberjack which Brian Miller of the website EverGreenTrad states "likely descended from the New Brunswick Canada song 'Morris Ellsworth.'" But this was all the info we could glean on Ellsworth and while it's a remote chance we find the concept of a lumberjack-composer mentally conjuring melodies while chopping wood deep in the forest quite Romantic. Either way it remains a rare and intriguing piece. Edward Schuberth & Co unknown

FIELDS, Mrs. [Annie], words by, and Margaret Ruthven Lang, music by
Sheet music: Orpheus Op. 38 No. 1
Boston: Arthur P. Schmidt 1902. Softcover. Good. Presumably the first edition. Folio. Two nested bifolia making eight pages. "For the Press" stamp on the front cover outer bifolia separated along the bottom half of the fold and bumping to the corners a complete but just a good or better copy. For voice and piano with pedal marks. Plate imprint "A.P.S. 5899-5." The lyrics are from the play Orpheus: A Masque by Annie Fields. The composer of this piece Margaret Ruthven Lang was an American composer born and based out of Boston. In Women & Music: A History" Karin Pendle says that Lang was the first woman composer to have a piece performed by a major American orchestra; the piece was her now lost Dramatic Overture: Op. 10 performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1893. OCLC locates only a single holding of this song and it appears to be equally uncommon in the trade. Arthur P. Schmidt unknown
