1 S. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Mit eh. Adresse (Faltbrief). An den Maler Louis Boulanger (1806-67) mit der Bitte, Liszt bei dem Schriftsteller Astolphe de Custine wegen einer Erkrankung zu entschuldigen; er werde diesen besuchen, sobald es ihm möglich sei: "C'est à peine si je vois assez pour vous écrire ces 2 mots , depuis 4 jours je garde la chambre et presque le lit avec cataplasmes, bandeau, emplâtres etc., etc. Soyez assez bon pour m'excuser auprès de Mr de Custines et dites-lui bien que la première fois que je sortirai, ce sera pour l'aller voir. Tout à vous de cœur". In einem kurzen Postskriptum bittet Liszt Boulanger zunächst um Custines Adresse, verbessert sich dann aber und bittet ihn, diesen für Sonntag zum Mittagessen einzuladen: "envoyez à moi son adresse - où mieux encore veuillez lui demander à déjeuner Dimanche - nous causerons un peu". - Liszt hatte Boulanger 1832 im Haus von Victor Hugo in der Normandie kennengelernt. Über eine Freundschaft zwischen den beiden Künstlern, die der Brief nahelegt, ist jedoch wenig bekannt. Durch seinen Aufenthalt bei Hugo wurde Liszt zu seiner Sinfonischen Dichtung "Mazeppa", beruhend auf Hugos gleichnamigen Gedicht von 1829, angeregt. Zuvor hatte Louis Boulanger Byrons "Mazeppa" (1819) als Anregung für ein 1827 entstandenes Gemälde genutzt. - Die einzige dokumentierte Verbindung zwischen Astolphe de Custine (1790-1857) und Franz Liszt ist ein Brief von 1841, in dem Custine dem Virtuosen seine Bewunderung ausdrückt und einen Besuch ankündigt (Briefe Hervorragender Zeitgenossen an Franz Liszt, 1824-1854. Leipzig, 1895, S. 18). Liszt verkehrte mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit in Custines berühmten Salon in Saint-Gratien bei Paris, zu dessen Gästen auch Victor Hugo und Frédéric Chopin zählten. - Mit originaler Verstärkung. Knittrig und leicht stockfleckig.

An einen namentlich nicht genannten Adressaten über dessen Transkription eines Schubert-Quartetts, die Liszt bereits vor ihrer Veröffentlichung als perfekt erachtet und an der er besonders die Fähigkeit lobt, den Text vollständig für Klavier zu adaptieren. Liszt entschuldigt sich, seine Meinung über eine Veröffentlichung des Werkes nicht schriftlich wiederholt zu haben: "Je suis à la fois en avance et en retard avec Vous. Avant la publication de votre magistrale transcription du Quatour de Schubert, je vous disais que je la trouvais parfaite, et que je m'imaginais point qu'on put mieux faire dans ce genre de travail. Vous savez maintenir intégralement le texte en l'adaptant avec une rare habileté aux éxigeances du piano. J'aurais dû Vous répeter par écrit cette juste et sincère opinion après la publication de l'oeuvre. Pardonnez ma faute d'omission, et pour me signifier mon pardon, veuillez bien faire réentendre, sous vos doigts, ce beau quatuor [...]". - Spuren alter Faltung.

1 S. Gr.-8vo (194:145 mm). In Passepartout (285:230 mm). Vier Takte für Klavier in F-Dur im 4/4-Takt auf zwei von Hand gezogenen Musiksystemen. Mit einem montierten Blütenzweig neben der Unterschrift. - Liszt unternahm zwischen 1839 und 1847 ausgedehnte Virtuosenreisen durch ganz Europa, wobei er allein in Deutschland mit großem Erfolg 298 Konzerte gab. Liszt war der erste Künstler, der den Typus des reinen Klavierabends, des sogenannten "Recitals", einführte. Bis dahin traten Pianisten normalerweise nur im Rahmen einer instrumental-vokal besetzten Veranstaltung auf (vgl. MGG² XI, 210).

4to. Liszts Entwurf des Titelblatts zu einer Neubearbeitung seiner "Fantaisie", niedergeschrieben am Titelblatt derselben, die im frühen Winter 1840 in Hamburg entstanden und in Wien bei Pietro Mechetti qm. Carlo erschienen war. Liszt notiert sehr präzise, wie der Titel dieser Revision und Erweiterung auszusehen habe, nämlich "Réminiscences de Lucrezia Borgia | executée par l'auteur dans en concerts de Paris et Vienne | 1er Partie: Trio du 2d Acte. | 2d Partie: Chanson à boire, - Duo et Finale". Weiters sollte "bey der 2ten Abtheilung" noch vermerkt werden "2d Edition, entièrement corrigé et augmentée par l'auteur". "Auf dem 1. Titel Blatt" solle "blos F. Liszt | Lucrezia Borgia" stehen. "NB 9, oder 10 Seiten von den 29 bleiben gänzlich so wie jetzt gestochen". Mit geringfügigen Änderungen gegenüber Liszts Entwurf erschienen die "Réminiscences de Lucrezia Borgia" dann 1849 im selben Verlag. - Etwas knittrig und fleckig und mit stärkeren Randläsuren- und einrissen.

Minor brownstaining; four pin holes and traces of former mounting.

Arezzo: Second Master of the Cortona Antiphonaries 1260. <p> This fragment belongs to the Common of Saints section of A CHOIR BOOK PRODUCED FOR THE FRANCISCAN CONVENT AT CORTONA. The initials' whimsical decoration and color palette match those of a group of codices realized in the same Arezzo workshop by at least three collaborating artists. The distinctive "muted pinkish ochre" and "ribbon of parchment tinted with egg white" inserted between the letters and their internal ornamentation Degl'Innocenti Gambuti tr. identifies our fragment's decoration as THE WORK OF THE SECOND MASTER OF THE CORTONA ANTIPHONARIES responsible for at least four other choir books still preserved between Cortona and Arezzo.<br /> The leaf offers two alternative chants and part of a third to be sung as Introit of the Mass celebrated on the feast of a generic group of martyrs. The decorated E on the recto marks the beginning of the Introit antiphon Ecce oculi domini super timentes which continues on the verso with the verse Exsultate justi in domino rectos. The decorated L marks the beginning of the alternative Introit antiphon Loquetur dominus pacem in plebem followed by the first few letters of the verse Benedixisti domine terram tuam avertisti. The first two lines of music on the recto are the final portion of the Introit verse Benedicam dominum in omni tempore which originally concluded a third optional chant.<br /> In very good condition some traces of adhesive to the top left and right margins of the recto bottom right corner of the verso mildly soiled and with a natural flaw in the vellum not affecting the text.<br /> ¶Degl'Innocenti Gambuti "Sulle tracce di una scuola miniatooria aretina" in I codici miniati medievali della biblioteca comunale e dell'accdemia etrusca di Cortona 44-6; Passalacqua I codici liturgici miniati dugenteschi nell'Archivio Capitolare del Duomo di Arezzo 97-8.</p> Second Master of the Cortona Antiphonaries] unknown

The rubric on the bottom right corner of the page introduces the Introit section and specifies its liturgical context: Mass celebrating the feast of a generic group of martyrs from Easter to Pentecost. The decorated S marks the beginning of the Introit antiphon Sancti tui domine benedicent te which continues on the verso with the verse Exaltabo te deus meus followed by another verse: Sancti tui domine florebunt a chant more typically used for the Lauds Office. The erased note next to this last piece may have been signaling this uncommon use.<br /> In nice condition blue and green pigments faded or abraded a 6 mm. marginal tear not affecting text three later pencil corrections to the music a later marginal note 7º in red crayon traces of adhesive tape on the verso.<br /> ¶Degl'Innocenti Gambuti "Sulle tracce di una scuola miniatooria aretina" in I Codici miniati medievali della biblioteca comunale e dell'accdemia etrusca di Cortona 44-6; Passalacqua I Codici liturgici miniati dugenteschi nell'Archivio Capitolare del Duomo di Arezzo 97-8.</p> Second Master of the Cortona Antiphonaries] unknown

The first two lines of music on the recto above the text block are the ending of a Gradual for the Common of Martyrs: Beatus vir qui timet dominum.
