(Chavez, Carlos; 1899-1978). Gara, Emmerich
A LIVELY BLACK & WHITE PORTRAIT OF THE MEXICAN COMPOSER & CONDUCTOR CARLOS CHAVEZ REHEARSING ON AN OUTDOOR STAGE IN FRONT OF SCAFFOLDING.
Ellenville NY Summer 1956. 1956. Fine. - A powerful 14 inch high by 11 inch wide photograph by Emmerich Gara depicting the Mexican composer and conductor Carlos Chavez conducting from a crude podium set up in front of scaffolding. Depicted in three quarter profile from the hip up Chavez leans forth with furrowed brow while conducting with his hands. Attired in a white sweater tucked into his pants with a colorful scarf tucked into his sweater the conductor is posed in front of the white tarps punctuated with colorful lines which drape the background. Scaffolding rises up from behind Chavez at right of the image. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara with his name & address stamped on the verso of the photograph. Signed by Gara in pencil on the verso. Fine. <p>The Mexican composer and conductor Carlos Antonis de Padua Chavez y Ramirez 1899-1978 was a music theorist educator as well as a journalist. He founded the Mexican Symphony Orchestra and was also its director. Influenced by Mexican culture his second symphony the highly popular "Sinfonia India" uses native Yaqui percussion instruments. He conducted the Symphony of the Air at the Empire State Music Festival held in Ellenville New York in July 1956.<p>Emmerich Gara b.1901 d.1963. Born in Vienna Austria in 1901 Gara established lifelong careers as a portrait photographer and professional cellist. Before the outbreak of the Second World War he and his wife emigrated to the United States where he was hired as cellist for the NBC Orchestra led by Arturo Toscanini. He performed with the orchestra later called The Symphony of the Air until his death.<p>From his seat in the front row of the orchestra Gara was in the unique position to photograph all the great conductors and soloists who appeared with the orchestra during this extraordinary period of musical activity. His subjects were captured in performance rehearsal and in candid moments during recordings and while socializing.<p>Gara's action portraits were used for record covers for the Book of the Month Club and in articles in Time Life and other major magazines around the world. (Cowell, Henry; editor). Chavez, Carlos
NEW MUSIC. A Quarterly of Modern Compositions. Volume I No. 4. July 1928. "This issue contains Sonatina for Violin and Piano by Carlos Chavez".
San Francisco CA: The New Music Society of California 1928. 1928. Very good. - Folio 14 inches high by 10-1/2 inches wide. Softcover bound in stapled indigo blue wraps titled and decorated in red on the front cover. The edges of the covers are faded and lightly creased. 11 & 1 pages. The corners and edges of the pages are slightly creased. Very good. <p>Laid in at the back is the 4-page "Violin" part also printed on folio pages. The bottom edges of these pages are dampstained. In addition to the violin part there is also laid in an original subscription form printed on a 10-3/4 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide sheet.<p>First edition of the fourth issue of Henry Cowell's important periodical. Through "New Music" Cowell an important composer himself published scores by modern composers who would otherwise have little opportunity to see their works distributed through the mainstream.<p>"This issue contains Sonatina for Violin and Piano by Carlos Chavez". The work was composed in 1924 by the pianist and composer Chavez as he toured Mexico with the violinist Silvestro Revueltas who was also himself a composer. Music critic James Reel describes the work thus: "The term 'sonatina' implies small scale and simplicity but this work is fiendishly difficult and at times harmonically harsh. It begins at a measured pace almost suggesting a Baroque adagio but the mood is tense and sour. The next movement is a jittery piece inspired by Mexican folk music although there's a note of panic in this fiesta. There follows a concluding slow movement in which the violin plays a long-lined though rather acidic melody over a restless piano accompaniment." Reel compares the work to some of Prokofiev's chamber music though not quite coming up to that same standard nor to Chavez's own later works he concludes that "Still the Sonatina is a compact expressive work that hardly deserves its neglect."<p>The Mexican composer conductor music theorist Carlos Chavez Carlos Antonio de Padua Chavez y Ramirez 1899-1978 was the founder and director of the Mexican Symphonic Orchestra. Chavez' work was influenced by native Mexican cultures as exemplified by his most popular work "Sinfonia India" which uses Yaqui percussion instruments. Not only was Chavez a composer he was also a journalist who founded the cultural journal "Gladios" with friends in 1916 and later joined the staff of Mexico City's "El Universal" in 1924 contributing over 500 articles to the paper. (Cowell, Henry; editor). Ornstein, Leo; and Weisshaus, Imre [aka Paul Arma].
NEW MUSIC. A Quarterly of Modern Compositions. Volume I No. 3. April 1928. "This issue contains Works for Voice by Leo Ornstein and by Imre Weisshaus".
San Francisco CA: The New Music Society of California 1928. 1928. Good. - Folio 14 inches high by 10-1/2 inches wide. Softcover bound in stapled purple wraps titled and decorated in green on the front cover. The edges of the covers are faded and creased with stains to the corners. 22 & 1 pages. The top front corners of the pages are dampstained. Good. <p>First edition of the third issue of Henry Cowell's important periodical. Through "New Music" Cowell an important composer himself published scores by modern composers who would otherwise have little opportunity to see their works distributed through the mainstream.<p>This issue contains "The Corpse for Voice and Piano by Leo Ornstein" and "Six Pieces for Solo Voice by Imre Weisshaus".<p>A leading American experimental composer and pianist of the early twentieth century Leo Ornstein 1895-2002 performed works by avant-garde composers as well as his own innovative and shocking compositions. He was a cause celebre in both Europe and the Americas. Ornstein made extensive use of the tone cluster and was recognized as the first significant composer to do so. Born in Kremenchug in Southwest Russia Ornstein studied in Petrograd before moving to the lower East side of New York City. Quoting from the brief biography printed at the end of the score: "His first works are extremely conventional in mode but as early as 1913 when modern music was quite rare he broke with great suddenness into a highly dissonant and individual style."<p>The Hungarian-French pianist composer and ethnomusicologist Imre Weisshaus 1905-1987 later composed under the pseudonym of Paul Arma. Quoting from the biography printed following the score: "From 1921-1924 he was a pupil of Bela Bartok in the Budapest Academy of Music. As well as being a composer Mr. Weisshaus is a pianist and tours constantly to spread a knowledge of modern Hungarian works. Outside of the 'Six Pieces for Solo Voice' none of Mr. Weisshaus' works is published. His unpublished compositions include the following: Pieces for Large Orchestra 1926; Two 'Recitatives' for Violin Solo 1925; Pieces for the Piano 1925-1927; 'Skizzen' for the Piano 1926-1927; Sonate for the Piano 1927 etc." Weisshaus left Hungary in 1930 settling in Paris in 1933 at which time he likely took on the pseudonym of Paul Arma.<p>Weisshaus' "Six Pieces for Solo Voice" are wordless. However vowels are prescribed for piece no. 4. The composer provides performance directions in English and Hungarian. San Francisco, CA: The New Music Society of California, 1928. paperback

(DAVIS, Thomas Osborne), words by, and Miss Mary O'Neil, music by
Sheet music: The Green Above the Red: Adopted as the National Air and Song of Ireland
Trumansburgh NY: R. Mockford 1866. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Folio. Single bifolium with a single sheet insert making six pages. foxing and offsetting throughout and edgewear still a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 3912 - 3. Although published 72 years before Ireland would elect their first president Douglas Hyde the cover nonetheless states that this song is "dedicated to the first president of the Irish Republic." This is not an uncommon dedication to find on Irish sheet music of the late 19th and early 20th century. Though it should not be read today as a statement of prescience but as it would have been read in 1866 as a statement of hope and resilience in Ireland's fight for independence for the day "they proudly set the Irish Green above the English Red." Unrecorded by OCLC and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade. A rare and early example of this celebrated Irish poem set to music. R. Mockford unknown

(DICKENS, Charles) Frank W Green, words by, and Alfred Lee, music by
Sheet music: Dolly Varden
Philadelphia: Lee & Walker 1875. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Folio. Two nested bifolia making eight pages. Light foxing and offsetting throughout toning to the exterior and light bumping to the corners still a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 13189 - 4. The cover illustration shows a young woman in a style of dress that was popular at the time known as "Dolly Varden" named after the Charles Dickens character from Barnaby Rudge. The song speaks playfully of the new fashion stating "Have you seen my little girl She doesn't wear a bonnet/She's got a monstrous flip-flop hat with cherry ribbons on it/She dresses in bed furniture just like a flower garden/A blowin' and a growin' and they call it 'Dolly Varden.'" The front cover of this piece features a beautiful example of the style. OCLC locates only two holdings and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade. Lee & Walker unknown

(DICKENS, Charles), [Adelaide Anne Procter], words by, and TH Howe, music by T H
Sheet music: Sorrow The Cradle Song of the Poor
Boston: White Smith & Compy 1868. Softcover. Very Good. Presumably the first edition. Folio. A single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Edgewear including some nicking to the top and bottom of the fold light offsetting throughout and rubbing to the unprinted back cover affecting the printed verso though the music remains clear and legible. Song for voice contralto or baritone and piano with pedal marks. Plate number 10. The piece credits the words to Charles Dickens but they are actually written by Adelaide Anne Procter who had poems published in Dickens' periodicals Household Words and All the Year Round. The lyrics to this song are from her poem "The Cradle Song of the Poor" which was published in her collection Legends and Lyrics: First Series which had an introduction by Dickens. Procter was a very popular poet in her time and a dedicated philanthropist. Both on the page and off her work focused on poverty and homelessness and in particular the women who were forced to navigate these obstacles. OCLC locates only two holdings of this song and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade. White, Smith & Compy unknown

(Dottori, Gerardo, copertina) Menotti Saltamerenda e C.A. Sabatini
Obbedisco. Inno dei Cacciatori delle Alpi. Parole di C.A. Sabatini. Musica di Menotti Saltamerenda
Edizione originale, emissione formato cartolina. L’illustrazione, tav. XXXVII n. 79

LOUIS GRAVEURE: WORLD RENOWNED BARITONE. College Auditorium Monday Evening January 14th at 8:15 o'clock. Auspices: Iowa Teachers' College. PAMPHLET.
New York: Metropolitan Musical Bureau 1924. 1924. Very good. - Octavo 9 inches high by 6 inches wide. Softcover self-wraps titled in red & black with a black & white portrait of the singer on the front wrap. A 4 page pamphlet including the covers with a brief biography and promotional material printed within and an advertisement for his recordings on the Columbia Graphophone Co. label printed on the rear wrap. Near fine. <p>An original pamphlet for Louis Graveure's January 14th 1924 recital in Cedar Falls Iowa.<p>Known as "The Mystery Man" he was born in London as Wilfrid Douthitt in 1888 but took on the name of Louis Graveure from his mother's maiden name and claimed to be Belgian. Though he first studied architecture at the Royal College of Art in South Kensington Louis Graveure 1888-1965 studied under the Welsh Soprano Clara Novello-Davies. He made his New York debut as a baritone opposite Eleanor Painter in the operetta "The Lilac Domino" under his birth name and subsequently had yet another debut recital in New York as Louis Graveure in 1915. His voice captivated the public and he had a successful career producing over 40 recordings for Columbia. He married the soprano Eleanor Painter in 1916 though they were divorced in 1930. In 1928 Graveure decided to sing tenor roles though critical reactions were mixed. He taught singing at Michigan State University before emigrating to Berlin in 1931. He primarily sang 5 roles those of Faust Rodolfo Pagilacci Don Jose and Lohengrin and and also made 4 films including one with Camilla Horn with whom he had a liaison. Graveure left Berlin for Paris before war broke out and claiming he was a spy the Gestapo searched Horn's home and destroyed her car seeking nonexistent incriminating material. He fled France in 1940 and ended up in England. He returned to the United States with his new wife Patricia and daughter Viola in 1947 but was unable to make much of a comeback. He and his family lived in comfort for the remainder of his years. New York: Metropolitan Musical Bureau, [1924]. paperback
