Watermark with initials "G.M." within a circle below a trefoil. <br /> <br /> Violino primo: 1f.<br /> Violino secondo: 1f. <br /> Unfigured basso continuo: i title 2 i blank pp. <br /> <br /> Violino primo part slightly soiled at edges; small tears to blank margins. Violino secondo part with small tear and minor stains to blank margins. Basso continuo part slightly soiled and stained with small tears to margins of title; title and second page of music reinforced at inner margins with early narrow strip of paper. This elegant and lighthearted trio sonata in B-flat major is cast in three movements: Allegro Assai C Andante C and Presto 3/8. Each movement is in binary form with repeats. The opening Allegro Assai incorporates leaping octaves occasional swerves into G-minor terrain and climactic rising scales at its conclusion. The Andante makes use gentle syncopations and slides of a third. The opening two movements start with the Romanesca progression a favorite opening gambit of 18th century composers conveying freshness and an amorous mood. The final Presto is a compact and attractive minuet. Most often the violins harmonize with each other and the bass making frequent use of parallel thirds and sixths; in several spots however they double each other. This may indicate that this work was originally conceived for a larger ensemble with string sections as it is not particularly common to encounter such doubling in chamber music. This sonata may have originally been an orchestral overture to a theatrical work. <br /> <br /> Not located in the RISM manuscripts database. unknown

Hübscher Druck aus der "Hochfürstlich Esterházyschen Hofbuchdruckerei" des Johann Leopold Stotz, der 1795 seine Presse in Wien aufgegeben hatte (vgl. Mayer II, 133). Stotz hatte "sich einer Schauspieltruppe angeschlossen, mit der er [um 1800] nach Eisenstadt kam. Hier wollte er ein Kindertheater errichten, verlegte sich dann aber doch wieder auf das Handwerk und führte stolz den Titel Hochfürstlicher Esterhazyscher Hofbuchdrucker [...] Er hat viele formatgleiche taschenbuchartige Textbücher in einfacher Frakturtype zu den im Hoftheater gespielten Dramen und Opern gedruckt" (Durstmüller I, 299). - Etwas braunfleckig. Das vorliegende Stammbuch versammelt über mehrere Jahrzehnte hinweg zahlreiche Autographen von mehrheitlich Instrumentalisten und Sängern, daneben finden sich aber auch einige Schriftsteller, Maler und gekrönte Häupter. Musikgeschichtlich interessant sind vor allem jene Beiträge, die von Auftritten stammen; so traten etwa Marthe Remmert und Marianne Brandt am 16. Oktober 1883 in St. Gallen auf und Helene Geisler und Teresina Tua am 6. "Johann Sebastian Bachs vierstimmige Choral-Gesänge gesammlet von Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach 1765." Contemporary manuscript copy of chorales by Bach and others. [Probably Leipzig, 1765-1775].
Oblong folio (340 x 202 mm). 272 written pages with a total of 252 numbered chorales (and 4 pages of empty pen-staves). Contemporary half calf over mottled boards with manuscript title label to upper cover. All edges sprinkled in red. Highly interesting collection of Bach chorales, very likely assembled from 1765 onwards at St. Thomas School, Leipzig under the direction of Johann Friedrich Doles, the student of and successor to Johann Sebastian Bach, who sought to make his master's works more widely known. According to an expert opinion included with the volume (ca. 1940), the late head of the Peters Music Library, Kurt Taut (1888-1939), had surmised that the book was "written in Doles's own hand". This assumption is sustained by the apparently autograph entry "di Doles" at the beginning of the Doles chorales which entirely resembles the writing of the remainder of the manuscript. - The volume comprises a total of 252 chorales in a clean, contemporary copy by a single hand, numbered in red ink and (by a later editor) in pencil. Numbers 1 through 200 broadly agree with the two-part printed edition of Bach's chorales issued by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (Berlin/Leipzig 1765 & 1769), while numbers 231-251 represent the melodies for Gellert's "Geistliche Oden und Lieder" which Doles published in 1758, but in a revised order. As far as they could be identified, the final piece as well as the thirty pieces between the (real or ascribed) Bach music and Doles's settings consist of works by various composers of the 16th through 18th centuries, including Doles. - Provenance: In 1882 the book was in the library of the Leipzig-based cultural anthropologist and Bach collector Albrecht Kurzwelly (1868-1917), as shown by his label on the pastedown and his ownership on the flyleaf. After his death, it passed into the possession of the Zwenkau music publisher and collector Walter Höckner (cf. his stamp and the end). - Extremeties slightly bumped; a few spine defects have been professionally repaired. Signed expertise (1878) by the Leipzig choirmaster and Bach scholar Wilhelm Rust (1822-92); another opinion (1918) by Rust's successor Bernhard Friedrich Richter (1850-1931) is pasted between the upper cover and the flyleaf.

Ballooning and Victorian Music Hall. Anonymous Manuscript of the lyrics of two comic songs: 'Balooning sic' inspired by a piece in Charles Dickens's 'Household Words' and Harry Sydney's 'It's just as well to take it in a quiet sort of way'.
Without place or date. London Circa 1865. 3pp. foolscap 8vo. On a bifolium of laid paper. In fair condition aged and worn. The first poem 'Balooning sic' covers both sides of the first leaf. No evidence has been discovered that this poem was ever published but it is inspired by the exploits of 'Mr. Green' in a humorous essay titled 'Ballooning' which appeared in Charles Dickens's 'Household Words' on 25 October 1851. The choice of two phrases 'pipes & backy' and 'Mounted Meershaums' is given in the present manuscript these variants perhaps suggesting that this item is authorial rather than a transcription. The second poem which covers the recto of the second leaf the verso being undated is untitled in the manuscript but is Harry Sydney's 'It's just as well to take it in a quiet sort of way' which was published in 1865 in London by Henri D'Alcorn George Henry Stannard Allcorn. ONE: 'Balooning sic'. 2pp. The poem is forty-eight lines long divided into twelve stanzas each stanza followed by the refrain 'Fal de ral.' The present poem begins: '1st. Verse When the London people used to think of going out of Town They'd take a Stage & that would to the Country take 'em down But Mister Green has lately proved as clear's the sun at noon The finest way to take the air is to take an air balloon - Fal de lal. 2. The other day when Mister Green went out just for a fly He took up two companions for a ride towards the sky Though Lords & Butler thus ventured up they found the difference soon For they were all reduced to Carmen when they rode in the Balloon Fal de ral.' The poem describes their journey made without 'fears of Highwaymen'. In the ninth stanza the travellers 'take their pipes & backy out' and the word 'backy' is glossed with the variant reading for 'pipes & backy' at the foot of the second page: 'Mounted Meershaums out.' The final stanza reads: '12. Now we find that different trav'lers will travel diff'rent ways Some like a railroad some a stage & some a Horse & Chaise Some being fond of water think a steam boat quite exquisite But there's nothing like an air balloon to pay a flying visit. Fal de ral'. TWO: Untitled Harry Sydney's 'It's just as well to take it in a quiet sort of way'. 1p. Twenty-four lines in eight stanzas. Begins: '1 We smile at the unnecessary trouble people take For fortune is not regulated by the fuss we make. I don't advise indifference but this I mean to say: Its just as well to take things in a quiet sort of way.' The poem was hugely popular being described as 'a certain sort of comic singing which I can't stand' by a character in Fun magazine 2 September 1865. The American impressario Tony Pastor 1837-1908 published a version of the poem in New York in 1868 without the following stanza of the present manuscript: 'To rise in your opinion most earnestly I hope But promise you I'll never mount the trapeze or the rope: I fancy in the long run that common sense will pay; And its just as well to take things in a quiet sort of way.' Chipping with loss to the inner margin just touching some of the text on the title page and the music on p. 2; some soiling and toning to the rear blank. In an entry for another edition of this Parrish & Willingham 6796 note that this was "published in the North as 'The picket guard' and as 'The picket's last watch.' Authorship of the poem was long claimed by Lamar Fontaine. It is assigned however to Mrs. Ethel Lynn Eliot Beers." This imprint is consistent with Parrish & Willingham 6799. Julian A. Selby unknown

Anschlagplakat für Beethovens große musikalische Akademie am 2. Jänner 1814 im großen Redoutensaal. Einblattdruck. [Wohl Wien, 1813].
1 S. Qu.-gr.-folio (406:483 mm). Extrem seltener, vermutlich unikaler Aushangzettel, für uns bibliographisch nicht nachweisbar. Am 31. Dezember 1813 hatte Beethoven im "Allgemeinen Intelligenzblatt zur Oesterreichisch-Kaiserlichen privilegirten Wiener Zeitung" (Nr. 209, 1317) unter dem Titel "Musikalische Akademie" folgende Anzeige veröffentlicht: "Der Wunsch zahlreicher, mir sehr verehrungswürdiger Freunde der Tonkunst, meine grosse Instrumental-Composition über Wellingtons Sieg bey Vittoria noch einmahl zu hören, macht es mir zur angenehmen Pflicht, dem schätzbaren Publikum hiermit anzukündigen, daß ich Sonntag den 2. Januar, die Ehre haben werde, mit dem Beystande der vorzüglichsten Tonkünstler von Wien, besagte Composition, mit neuen Gesangstücken und Chören vermehrt, im k. k. Redouten-Saale, zu meinem Besten, aufzuführen". - Auf dem Programm standen: "Erstens: Die neue große Symphonie [d. i. die 7. oder 8. Sinfonie]. Zweytens: Ein neuer feyerlicher Einzugs-Marsch mit Chören [Marsch Nr. 1 in F-Dur, "Yorckscher Marsch"), Drittens: Eine noch nie gehörte Baß-Arie, mit Begleitung des Chors, aus der Oper: Die Ruinen von Athen, die Scene des Oberpriesters im Tempel der Musen, gesungen aus Gefälligkeit für den Conzertgeber von Herrn Weinmüller k. k. Hofkapell- und Kammersänger [d. i. Festspiel nach Kotzebue, op. 113, wohl die Arie des Hohepriesters, "Will unser Genius noch einen Wunsch gewähren"], Viertens: Eine große vollstimmige Instrumental-Composition, geschrieben auf Welllingtons Sieg in der Schlacht bey Vittoria [d. i. "Sinfonisches Schlachtengemälde", op. 91)". - Bei dem im Aushang erwähnten Sänger Weinmüller handelt es sich um den deutsch-österreichischen Bass und Theaterregisseur Carl Weinmüller, dessen vorzüglichste musikalische Tat darin bestand, dass er 1814 zusammen mit Ignaz Saal und Johann Michael Vogl Beethovens weitgehend vergessene Oper "Fidelio" für eine Benefizvorstellung wählte "und den Komponisten damit zu einer grundlegenden Überarbeitung des Werkes anregte. Diese dritte, endgültige Fassung kam am 23. Mai 1814 im Theater am Kärntnertor erstmals zur Aufführung" (Wikipedia). - Etwas fleckig und abgegriffen; gefaltet.

Rede zur Geburts-Feyer Bethovens am 17. December 1838. O. O., [ca. 1838].
4to (ca. 180 x 217 mm). Deutsche Handschrift auf Papier. 37 SS. Zeitgenöss. marmorierter Einband. Zeitgenössische Reinschrift der von Schuler 1838 im Innsbrucker Verein "Die Namenlosen" gehaltenen Beethoven-Gedenkrede, die posthum in seinen "Gesammelten Schriften" (Innsbruck 1861, S. 166-178) gedruckt wurde. Wohl von Schuler selbst als Geschenkexemplar für einen namentlich nicht genannten Freund besorgte Reinschrift, der am Ende des Manuskripts folgenden Eintrag hinterließ: "Ich danke dir lieber Schuler! Unter Thränen gelesen im (!) meinen 7u.7sten Jahr!". - Der Jurist und Schriftsteller Schuler, Abgeordneter der Frankfurter Nationalversammlung und Wegbereiter der Tiroler Literatur im Vormärz, hinterließ auch eine Reihe literarischer Werke, darunter das Libretto zur Oper "Die zehn glücklichen Tage" von Louis Schindelmeisser. Schuler, der in seiner Gedenkrede auf Lebensstationen und Charakter sowie einzelne Werke Beethovens (u. a. die Sonate für Pianoforte und Violine in G-Dur, Op. 96) eingeht, konnte diesem während seiner Studienzeit in Wien ab 1820 noch persönlich begegnet sein. Die überragende musikgeschichtliche Bedeutung des damals noch verkannten Meisters war Schuler bewusst ("obwohl keinem seiner erhabensten Kunstgenossen nachstehend, ist [er] unter unsern Umgebungen am wenigsten gekannt, u. beinahe unverstanden", Bl. 3v), und seine Rede ist ein wichtiges Zeugnis der frühen Beethoven-Biographik, die eigentlich erst 1838 mit den "Biographischen Notizen" von Wegeler und Ries einsetzte. - Einband gering berieben; Papier leicht gebräunt aber insgesamt von schöner Erhaltung.

Edizioni originali. Ottimo esemplare. Rarissima placchetta belliniana, pubblica quattro lettere inviate dal celebre compositore a Giovanni Battista Perucchini tra 1831 e 1832, riccamente annotate dal poligrafo antiquario veneziano Giovanni Salvioli, che dedica la pubblicazione al compositore Francesco Florimo. Rappresenta uno dei primi contributi in direzione di un epistolario belliniano, come accortamente segnalato da Graziella Seminara (Prospettive per l’edizione critica dei carteggi belliniani, in «Boll. Studi belliniani» 1, 2015, 66-85). La data di pubblicazione si desume da quella posta in calce alla nota postfativa, «Venezia, agosto, 1884», confermata nel nostro esemplare da un piccolo timbro a secco circolare sulla copertina (un «10» circondato da «Ricordi 1884»). La placchetta si trova legata in calce alla «Vita» del compositore pubblicata da Antonio Aniante per l’editore Gobetti nel 1925. Ottimo esemplare. Il direttore d’orchestra, indicato nella locandina, è Pietro Mascagni, ormai assurto a fama mondiale, che dal 1909 era diventato direttore artistico del Teatro Costanzi di Roma. Nel cast anche i nomi del tenore polacco Ignacy Dygas (italianizzato in Ignazio Digas) e il soprano Giannina Russ.
