A Collection of Thirteen Cabinet Cards of the Shepard Family Band. V.p. ca. 1880s-1890s
Mostly New England: Various Photographers 1890. Cabinet cards measuring 6 ½ x 4 ¼ inches. Various settings showing the band members posed with their instruments including banjos violins trumpets drum and tubas. Varying wear but generally very good with some normal age-related fading. Very Good. Originally from Lawrenceville New York the Shepard Family Band toured throughout the Northeast in the 1880s and 1890s eventually settling in South Royalton Vermont. All members of the family were apparently musically inclined: “In addition to Minnie mother and matriarch Mary “Minnie†Shepard and her husband patriarch James Monroe Shepard all of the children were pressed into service. Daughter Laura Belle the ‘violiniste’ was getting better all the time under the instruction of a ‘competent master.’ Her fans “will be astonished at the improvement in style tone and expression.†It was said of little Lessie that ‘Among lady cornetists she has no equal.’ The darling little son of the family Master Burtie could not help but please for he was well-known to be ‘The youngest Tuba soloist in the world; only nine years of age; scarcely larger than the instrument he plays.’ He was also a ‘clever comedian singer and character artist.†The baby little Flossie “a sweet little miss of four summers’ was said to be a “wonderful mimic and impersonator…a veritable little fairy.’ Daughters Kittie and Georgia were also part of the troupe.†- Henry Sheldon Museum. An Archive of Songs Some Annotated and a Partial Draft of Woody Guthrie’s Hard Hitting Songs for Hard Hit People from the Collection of Harold Ambellan Guthrie’s Collaborator and Benefactor
New York 1940. Eighty-five pages including sixty loose pages and a partial draft of Guthrie’s Hard Hitting Songs for Hard Hit People totaling twenty-five pages. With one handwritten page. One page - a typewritten copy of “The Ballad of Harry Bridges†- with a handwritten note by Guthrie to Ambellan. With photocopies of several letters from Guthrie to Ambellan included. Also with a broadside of the Carol Tree Carol by Alan and Elizabeth Lomax 1940 and a notecard with the lyrics to “Hawl Away Joe†written Inscription states “Here you are Harold hope it aint late. Well if it is will be singing about old Harry for a many a day to come. Pour it on em Boy. Woody G.â€. A fascinating collection of material from the collection of Harold Ambellan Woodie Guthrie’s friend collaborator and landlord during an important creative period for Guthrie in the 1940s. The group contains a partial draft of Guthrie’s Hard Hitting Songs for Hard Hit People which was written while Guthrie was living in Ambellan’s loft as well as a collection of over sixty loose songsheets not included in the book. Of these over thirty are not listed in Tulsa’s Woody Guthrie Center finding aid. The sixty pages include variant titles and verses to recorded and published versions with some items attributed to Ledbelly and overall the group should shed light on scholar’s efforts to map out the landscape of the American folk song at the time of Guthrie’s work. The typescript draft generally matches the published version with the occasional typo. <br /> <br /> Nora Guthrie writes in her introduction to Hard Hitting Songs of the influence of Ambellan on Guthrie’s creative process. Ambellan was an artist and sculptor and part time musician and Guthrie lived in Ambellan’s loft on 21st Street. “The loft was mostly filled with Ambellan’s sculptures which were abstract and very large. However the couple managed to throw a cot up in the back of the loft for Woody to crash on… Evenings at the loft often included impromptu hootenannies where Woody and Pete’s Seeger musician friends would gather to raise some money to help pay the Ambellans’ rent… There was a lot of singing and a lot of songwriting and it was in the 21st Street loft that Hard Hitting Songs came into existence.†Guthrie wrote “Vigilante Man†and “Hard Travellin†while staying at the Ambellans’ loft. <br /> <br /> Nora Guthrie continues: “ Alan Lomax’s father John Lomax had collected a group of songs that dealt with migrant workers’ share crop farmers’ and industrial workers’ issues many of the lyrics protesting workers’ conditions and advocating for their rights. At the time the material was considered ‘too hot to handle’ by government employees so Alan handed it over to Pete Seeger and Woody to browse through. They loved the material and together with Alan they decided to create a new songbook they would embellish with their own writings and commentary as well as some additional original songs. Working fourteen hours a day they completed the songbook in about five months. … The manuscript which they had titled Hard Hitting Songs for Hard-Hit People was left behind in the loft literally saved by Elisabeth Higgens until its existence became known in the 1960s when it was first published in 1967.â€<br /> <br /> Overall a very scarce relic of an important period in Guthrie’s career with a fantastic association. Guthrie ephemera and archival pieces are notoriously scarce on the market with single letters occasionally surfacing. unknown

New York: Wm. A. Pond 1865. Folio 13 ½ x 10 ½ inches. Fine condition. Fine. An unusual use of sheet music as satire with the lithographed cover showing a fake stock certificate. The cover - engraved by Major & Knapp - advertises an ownership share in the Spondolix Petroleum company and states that F.B. Helmsmuller who was actually a noted composer was the “Treasurer and General Manager†of the company. This is a particularly fine example of the piece. In our research we found several references to this piece as being a real stock certificate for a real company however this is clearly a parody of the oil business. This was printed in 1865 when the Pennsylvania oil industry was booming and the engraved illustration appears to show a countryside scene in Pennsylvania or somewhere similar. Four copies in OCLC. Autograph Letter Signed to Albert Bagby Regarding a Lecture at the Newport Town and Country Club late 1880s
Newport 1880. Single page with writing on both sides signed by Howe. Fine condition. Fine. A short but interesting note from Julia Ward Howe to Albert Bagby the Illinois-born musician who trained with Liszt in Germany and would eventually be a longtime host of “Mr. Bagby’s Musical Mornings†at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York where it was a fixture among the high society set. Bagby’s career as a host started after presenting a paper to the Newport Town and Country Club while Howe was president. After he presented his paper on Liszt at the club he was approached by Howe’s daughter Maude Howe Elliot about turning the paper into a lecture. This would end up being the catalyst for him to abandon performing and devote himself to lectures and after giving his first presentation on Liszt to a small audience in his Manhattan studio he began his regular series at the Waldorf-Astoria. <br /> <br /> The letter reads as follows:<br /> <br /> My dear Mr. Bagby <br /> <br /> The time for your paper is not quite settled. I will send you word about it very shortly and shall bear in mind what you say about your possible trip to Europe. We should be much disappointed to lose your lecture and I hope that we shall certainly hear you.<br /> <br /> Yours sincerely<br /> Julia W. One large oblong silver gelatin photo folio sized 14 x 10.5 in. mounted on black studio board sized 17 x 10.5 in. bumping & chipping at corners minor edgewear to lower fore-edge of image & board spotting on verso of board still VG image w/ good contrast. A very nice and rare early large photograph of the nascent Portland Symphony Orchestra which in 1911/1912 elected their conductors on an ongoing basis and their rotation of conductor and concertmaster rotation was determined by drawing lots. The 1911-1912 season featured conductors Carl Denton John Bayley Harold Bayley and Mose Christensen with the Bayley’s and Christensen alternating. The PSO typically drew from the Vaudeville houses dance theatre’s and even silent movie theatre orchestras in order to fill out their number and this photo captures 50 artists performing on the Heilig Theatre stage. At the time the newly opened Heilig Theatre sported a 2/5 Kimball Pipe Organ and would operate as Heilig until 1929 then the Rialto Mayfair and finally the Fox before being demolished in 1997. A grouping of post-WWI patriotic writings and correspondence by the singer and monologuist arguing that American exceptionalism pacifism and in her view Christian Science represent the "spirit of democracy" more than "The Star Spangled Banner" does. Originally from Tennessee Cheatham trained in Europe and became quite popular there and in the US performing regularly for members of the royal family in England; she was a friend and follower of Mary Baker Eddy. The other titles in the booklet are: "Corresondence Resulting from the Circulation of the Pamphlet Entitled Words and Music ."; "A Protest in Defense of Children" also about the "Star Spangled Banner"; and "Excerpts from Letters".OCLC is wrong on this one: many of the institutions noted as having only the digital copy appear to also have physical copies. 1950s Scrapbook of Photos of Country Musicians
United States 1950. Eighty-four photos including real photo postcards mainly measuring 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches. With manuscript captions under photos and many photos captioned on negative. Photos generally excellent to Near Fine; scrapbook pages delicate with some marginal damage. Excellent. A scrapbook of photographs of better- and lesser-known country musicians likely assembled in the 1950s. Subjects include the National Barn Dance Gang the 101 Ranch Boys the Carolina Sweethearts the Bar X Cowboys Gene Autry and the Ranch Riders and the Novelty Boys and Cora Deane. The scrapbooker seems to have been a serious fan of Andy Reynolds from the 101 Ranch Boys as many photographs in the scrapbook are portraits of him. The band hailed from Kansas City Kansas and was active in the 1930s playing regularly on WSBA in York Pennsylvania. The photos of the Novelty Boys and a musician called “Willie Whistleâ€â€”not the clown of the same name—are signed. Of interest to historians and fans of country western music. unknown

Dated July 23rd 1814 and advertising a concert by a Mr. Stephenson "one whom Nobody knows and who comes from Nobody knows where - Who is not at all 'celebrated' at present and perhaps never will be and yet a beautiful Poet a charming Composer an excellent Musician and a delightful Singer &c." playing "two flutes and on three flagelets at once" later noting that only gentlemen will be admitted "therefore Ragamuffins Jacobins Messrs.
