Dieses Ethos das Heiden-und Christentum verbindet durchklingt Bachs Matthäuspassion vom ersten bis zum letzten Takte. Es ist kein Lied der Schwäche der Entsagung sondern ein Lied der . Stärke und des Trostes gesungen allen denen die um die lebenspendende Kraft eines großen Sinnbildes wissen. Bach greift in das Evangelium und findet dort die Anlage seines Dramas vorgebildet Sie muß eine andere werden als die nach Johannes. Aber der Zeit genügt Luthers körniges Bibelwort nicht. Sie will selbst daran beteiligt sein mit ihren Gedanken und Empfindungen. So ruft Sebastian den Dichter Picander herbei. Dieser dichtet die ganze Überschwenglichkeit religiösen Barodcempfindens hinein aber nicht obenhin sondern mit erstaunlicher Inbrunst so daß des Musikers Phantasie sogleich in Flammen steht. Es besteht kaum ein Zweifel daß beide Hand in Hand gearbeitet haben nur daß Bachs Visionen die Gewalt der schwachen Verse ins Ungeheure zu steigern vermochten. Die kurzen Strophen des ersten Chordialogs gleichsam vor Aufgehen des Vorhangs gesungen werden zu einem dramatischen Bilde von eindringlicher Schärfe. Zwei Chöre Frauen die symbolische Tochter Zion begegnen sich auf dem Wege nach Golgatha und rufen sich in der Ferne den Zug erblickend fassungslose Klagen zu. Unendliches Gewoge in hartem e-moll. Erst jetzt öffnet sich der Schauplatz. Entsprechend hat auch der Schlußchor als außerhalb des Vorgangs stehender Epilog zu gelten. Um den Anteil der Gemeinde als kirchlicher Körperschaft zu sichern stehen wie Kreuzesstationen an wichtigen Punkten alte herrliche Choräle. Jeder von ihnen ein Edelstein musikalischer Gestaltung! Weiterhin: Wie in der antiken Tragödie der Chor die Handlung anteilnehmend begleitet hier anspornt oder warnt dort mitfühlt oder erschüttert ist so durchziehen die Passion Arien und kurze madrigalische Einlagen in denen christliche ein paar Anstreichungen im Text sonst ordentlich Leipzig : Peters hardcover

Bach seated his head turned right his body slightly left. He is elegantly dressed in a rich green coat with decorative gold elements waistcoat and white ruffled shirt holding a sheet of music manuscript in his left hand his right hand resting on his left forearm.<br /> <br /> Slightly worn; 1 cm hole to lower right with some loss of paint to lower portion affecting an area measuring ca. 4 x 7 cms; one additional small abrasion to area depicting music manuscript. <br /> <br /> Small circular label of the Braus Gallery on Madison Avenue New York City to verso; the gallery was founded in ca. 1920 and the business terminated in the 1930s. The youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach J.C. Bach "was the most versatile of J.S. Bach’s sons and the only one to write Italian operas. He was an important influence on Mozart and with C.F.
