They present an alternative policy approach based on matching energy supply to needs and they examine pome of the implications of pursuing such an alternative strategy. And whilst the alternatives they propose are based on Scottish needs they have a much wider validity. The authors come from a wide variety of backgrounds and academic disciplines. They do not always agree and their disagreements can be followed in black and white by anyone with a mind to do so. But on one thing they are agreed: present policies of electrification are heading our society for bankruptcy or worse. Although three systems are now being used successfully all have certain advantages and disadvantages and the final choice of a particular system for a country will necessarily be a compromise. The purpose of this book is to provide in clear easily understandable terms and with the minimum of mathematics and colorimetry the basic principles of colour television with particular reference to the PAL system. The treatment adopted is the result of the author's long experience with the BBC Engineering Training Department lecturing and developing colour equipment for training purposes. The IMTSC system is dealt with in some detail because it was the first colour television system to be of practical importance and many of its features are basic to all other systems. The main disadvantage of NTSC is the occurrence of differential phase distortion ; the other systems now in use namely PAL and SECAM were developed in an endeavour to overcome this defect. The major part of the book is devoted to the PAL Phase Alternating Line variant since this system has been adopted for Great Britain. Simple and delay line PAL are described fully and particular emphasis is given to the immunity of PAL from hue distortion in the presence of differential phase distortion. The SECAM system developed in France presents several features of technological interest and the significance of these is indicated. Having described all three systems the author summarises their distinguishing properties and compares their relative advantages and disadvantages. The provision of numerous diagrams and tables including detailed block diagrams of the coding and decoding equipment make this an invaluable practical guide not only for students but also for broadcasting engineers who today have to be acquainted with the handling recording and conversion of the signals of all three systems. <br/> <br/> Newnes Butterworths paperback‎

This book which is intended to be a companion volume to the author's Voltage Stabilized Supplies contains a good deal of information on the relatively new transistor stabilizers and semiconductor reference elements. The first part of the book is concerned with glow-discharge tubes which are widely used both as simple stabilizers and as reference elements. The characteristics of corona tubes and Zener diodes are then dealt with and many stabilizers employing thermionic valves or transistors are described. In the final chapter the properties of various miscellaneous circuits are discussed. A long list of references is provided to supplementthe one given in Voltage Stabilized Supplies. This will provide additional information which readers may require about any of the topics treated. Some fundamental principles of the subject have been included so that the book should be of interest to university and other students taking courses in electrical engineering and physics. It is hoped that the more detailed descriptions of many circuits with information about their designs and comments on their limitations which are presented will make the book of value to research workers in most branches of science. A look at the various types of mould and core material available today will show that there has been a steady progress in the development of that important aspect of steel founding. About a decade ago when the carbon dioxide process was finding application in this country zealous foundrymen described it as a new epoch. This was later supplemented by the air-set materials and there is a continuing interest in this field of chemically hardened moulds and cores. I myself among others have often wondered if clay-bonded sands would soon become a thing of the past. However the trend appears to be that the natural sands and the synthetic greensand mixes are going to stay for a long time unless the non-clay-bonded materials become cheaper and more plentiful than they are today. The first conditions which a mould or core material must fulfil are that it must be workable i.e. it must have a degree of flowability and that it must have adequate strengths for the constructed moulds to retain their rigidity. Much work has therefore been done to understand the filler grains and the bonding media in the green state. It is equally important that the mould-core surfaces are able to resist the washing action of the flowing metal during casting and remain rigid until the casting has solidified or to breakdown at an appropriate stage when the casting is contracting. While writing this book I have assumed that a reader unfamiliar with mould and core making principles will read the first chapter of my book on the carbon dioxide process published by Pergamon Press.
