Original Scale Model of Proposed Moon Spacecraft WIth Lunar Excursion Module
Bell Telephone Laboratories November 1962. Very good. Flat wooden model constructed in sections with tabs and slot assembly; several parts secured in place with adhesive and metal pins. Front sides printed in different colors with simplified schematic diagrams and abbreviations of names and functions. Printed paper labels to verso with additional letters in black pen identifying model components. Some breakage of delicate or narrow sections; broken and detached parts present and included. <br/><br/>Original two-dimensional particleboard presentation model of a proposed lunar spacecraft incorporating the Lunar Orbit Rendezvous concept designed by Bell Telephone Laboratories and dated November 1962 the same month NASA awarded the contract for development of the Lunar Excursion Module LEM to Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation. <br /> <br />Until July 1962 competing factions had favored the alternative methods of direct ascent or Earth Orbit Rendezvous Direct ascent though simple in concept and appealing in theory would have required development of the enormous Nova rocket for launch; and EOR favored by Werner von Braun and his associates would have involved two independent launches which would then rendezvous in Earth orbit assemble a lunar vehicle proceed to the Moon and back again. <br /> <br />The Lunar Orbit Rendezvous called for the launch of one Saturn rocket to orbit the Moon from which a smaller landing craft would then detach and to which it would return for the return trip home. LOR had lagged in popularity due to perceived complexity the allure of direct ascent and the particularly alarming risk of failure: abandonment of astronauts in orbit with no means of rescue following a potential failed rendezvous. A pair of scientists from Bell Aerosystems had in fact previously proposed a theoretical early delivery of a man to the moon via a one-way trip with the lucky astronaut promised eventual retrieval once technology allowed given materials to build himself living quarters the size of a modest studio apartment and generously provided with enough oxygen for several weeks at least. This proposal was not pursued. <br /> <br />The LOR's chief proponent was John Houbolt a NASA Langley engineer who in 1961 wrote an impassioned nine-page letter to the agency's Associate Administrator making his case and iimploring the Administrator not to dismiss him as a crank. This was the impetus for a reappraisal of the idea and by July 1962 the decison to pursue it. In spite of strong opposition from partisans of the other alternatives -- including Kennedy's science adviser Jerome Wiesner -- NASA officially selected the lunar-orbit rendezvous concept as primary mission mode for a manned moon landing and consequently issued a call for proposals. <br /> <br />Though not one of the nine companies submitting contract proposals for LEM development Bell Telephone Laboratories provided NASA with communications planning and systems engineering support for the moon mission begininning in 1962 through Bellcomm a division newly created for that purpose. This Bell model -- presumably designed as a visual aid to an initial Grumman presentation or NASA press conference -- includes an orange LEM with slender hinged spider-like legs for landing; jauntier and more elegant than the Apollo lander as eventually constructed but recognizably its ancester. Built along stylish '60s lines the color-coded front of the spacecraft is immediately legible to a lay person while labels on the reverse give a few technical specifics e.g. "S-IV Burn to Orbit / H = 100 n.mi. / V = 15000 n.mi/hr." <br /> <br />A rare and remarkable piece of memorabilia from a crucial moment in the U.S. space program. The program originally airing simultaneously on Philadelphia radio and television station WFIL became a major hit in the local market and was eventually picked up by ABC and renamed AMERICAN BANDSTAND hosted by Dick Clark. The iconic live pop music show was a major part of the creation story for the American teenager. This program dates from the third season of the show featuring the original host Bob Horn. With numerous photographs of the Bandstand studio fans performers and crew the year book describes the inner workings of the show spotlights fans visitors to the show and recent acts like Debbie Reynolds Rudy Vallee and Tony Bennett. The folding map which came in an envelope with a "letter both of which are included here measures 38.5 by 50 cm and it was issued by the popular radio program's sponsor Pepsodent. The show in its original incarnation was overtly Rascist playing into stereotypes of simple-minded clownish blacks and the title characters were in fact played by two white actors. In the map there is plenty of the imagery with this same flavor with the cartoonish denizens looking like buffoonish ants. Still in a strange way the town depicted captures something of the fanciful charm of the ideal small town. The map and the insert letter are pristine. The mailing envelope which features photo images of Correll and Gosden in black face has an address sticker on it and light soiling and wear. <br /><br /> Pepsodent Co. The board lists the production name the director’s name Adam Smith the cameraman’s name Owen McPolin the scene number the roll of film number the take number and the date of shooting. 11 inches wide by 9 3/4 inches tall. Very good condition. The Eleventh Hour is the only Dr. Who episode in which Adam Smith and Owen McPolin worked together. The story has Dr. Who crashing the Tardis into a Scottish village where he encounters his new companion Amy Pond played by Karen Gillan. Jimmy Starr 1902 - 1990 is best known as a Hollywood columnist though he was also a writer and actor known for The Corpse Came C.O.D. 1947 A Night for Crime 1943 and Pink Pajamas 1929. RKO Radio Pictures was a motion picture production and distribution company. The company was originally established in 1929 as Radio Pictures during the founding of Radio-Keith-Orpheum Corporation. In 1931 the company merged with Pathé and was renamed RKO Radio Pictures in 1932. Some of the RKO films from 1932 Mr. Starr may have enjoyed include such popular productions as What Price Hollywood directed by George Cukor starring Constance Bennett and Lowell Sherman and Westward Passage starring Ann Harding Laurence Olivier and Zasu Pitts. B&W photographs Tribute/program guide for a retrospective series of programs from the first four decades of long-running drama series which began in the era of live TV and continues to this day. Includes program notes by Kenneth Kirby for the 32 programs presented in the series proper presented throughout August and September 1991 plus notes for three additional out-of-series shows included in UCLA's annual Festival of Preservation. The program is a nice mix of HHoF's repertoire which ranged from the tried-and-true high-toned theatre "Hamlet" "Macbeth" "The Little Foxes" to hit musicals "Kiss Me Kate" "The Fantasticks" to new adaptations of literary classics "All Quiet on the Western Front" "The Secret Garden" "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" to original productions such as "My Name is Bill W." and "The Marva Collins Story." Supplementing the more detailed notes for the program in the series there is also a full rundown of all the HHoF shows from 1951 through 1991 with credits and brief notes. . Riding the Air Waves
New York: Horace Liveright 1930. First Edition. Fine in a very lightly rubbed pictorial dust jacket with a small chip at the top of the front panel near the spine and a few minor nicks slight wear to corners. 8vo 329pp; original terracotta cloth stamped in black and with the printed paper radio-dial affixed to the front board by means of a metal grommet. This vivid first person account of virtual world-travel by young Palmer stands as a key work in the literature of hobbyist radio and an urtext in what later developed as gamer culture. Eric Palmer Jr. was the son of a radio executive who had encouraged his interest in two-way radio and provided him with his own radio set. The father grew increasingly concerned however as the hobby gradually took over the life of his teenaged son who seldom emerged from his room stayed up late and missed meals and schooldays. The case became something of a national sensation when it was written up in TIME magazine after the father appealed to the federal government to suspend his son's radio license. The chairman of the Federal Radio Commission wrote to young Palmer: ". . . This is a marvelous field for the American boys and with enthusiasm as you have displayed should as a rule be commended rather than discouraged but in order to develop into a big strong healthy boy you must have regular meals and your full quota of sleep." The book with its innovative binding featuring a printed rotary dial is very uncommon especially with the rare dust jacket. Horace Liveright unknown books
