Nashville: The McQuiddy Press 1926. First Edition. First printing. Inscribed on front endpaper: "To Nettie Spielman / with best wishes from / Geo. D. Hay "Solemn Old Judge" dated 1933. Tight Near Fine copy lacking the dustwrapper. <br /> <br /> Hay 1895-1968 started his career in print journalism but made his name as a radio personality primarily in Nashville where he was the originator and long-time Master of Ceremonies of the Grand Ole Opry program on WSM from which the venerable live stage variety show at the Ryman Auditorium drew its name. Between musical acts Hay would intersperse comic interludes in the character of "The Solemn Old Judge" a character he had first invented for his column "Howdy Judge" in the Memphis Commercial Appeal. These columns are reproduced here; they are mostly in the form of racist caricature very much drawn from the minstrel show tradition the typical premise being an African-American character appearing in court before a white judge with much white-supremacist hilarity to follow the Black voices written in exaggerated dialect. <br /> <br /> Hay adapted his "Solemn Old Judge" persona to radio along the way establishing the basic character of the popular American "hillbilly" music industry - white southern and racially segregated - that placed country music in direct opposition to the race-mixing socially "degenerate" music of the northern cities especially New York. In the words of sociologist Richard Peterson: "The down home rural card was a good card to play.because there was such fear of what was happening in the cities. There was so much race mixing there was so much jazz there was all kinds of degradation in music. Here was a way of finding a pure unadulterated American music that came out of an Anglo-Saxon background. The Sovereigns sought members among all workingmen not just farmers. Its purpose articulated by its founder William H. Earle of Massachusetts was "elevating the character improving the condition of and as far as possible perfecting the happiness of the laboring classes" through the establishment of consumer cooperatives. The cooperative network would allow workers to "control the whole of what they produce and exchange it as near as may be even with other hand-workers thus saving to themselves the fortunes which those who are devoted to manipulating other people's labour and to getting rich thereby have heretofore taken by extortion." Dale Zysman is identified in Bella Todd's autobiography as a Vice-President in the Teacher's Union widely referred to as the "Stalin of the Union" for his habit of holding his pipe at precisely the same angle as appeared in Stalin's official portraits. Privately printed Presented to Co-Workers and Friends. This copy has a gift inscription in German dated 1920 though the name is unclear Der Veylasser. In Very Good condition with rubbing to extremities and shallow fraying to the fabric less severe than seen with other examples. Two color plates printed on semigloss stock have some discoloration noted in other examples but the copy is overall bright and clean. The monograph was initially issued to mark the U.S. operation's 25th anniversary in 1912 when they moved to a massive 12-story headquarters in New York where the iconic Silk Clock was installed in 1926. Although the book made it to press in 1913 the foreword indicates The first compilation was hurried however and lacking in many essentials" especially "data and illustrations from abroad 11. This edition has been embellished with all the visual bells and whistles Robert Schwarzenbach desired incorporating an uncommonly broad range of printing techniques from photogravure to offset lithography. Copious in-text portraits vignettes and ornaments are peppered with 35 total leaves of platesmany printed both sides and on varying paper stocks: 2 photogravure plates 3 full color plates 25 leaves with 39 pages of halftone photographs many two-tone one folding plate and 4 leaves with 7 pages with striking color charts reminiscent of DuBois' data graphics. The book details the company's history and global operations with a hefty portion devoted to its American facilities and operations. While largely celebrating its present state the text notably goes into detail about the political and economic conditions: "The year 1896 was in other respects disappointing. The free silver campaign of William Jennings Bryan demoralized business. It was during this periodwhich followed the enactment of the Dingley Tariffthat imports steadily fell off and the silk industry of the United States experienced almost monumental growth" 89. It also addresses advances in machinery the management of workers where those beautiful data graphics come in and the company's civic responsibilities. A lavish and thoughtful production that humbles modern luxury brand monographs. In fair condition on aged and worn paper with short closed tears at edges of folds. An interesting perspective on the British aviation industry from what Dr T. R. Bromund of Yale University has described as 'the industrial wing of the Empire lobby'. The opening paragraph reads: 'Owing to the recent resignation of the entire Board with one exception of the British Overseas Airways Corporation the public has become dimly aware that British Air Transport is facing a crisis but as yet has little or no idea of the magnitude of the issues involved. It cannot be expected to grasp the inescapable truth that on the result of the handling of these issues may depend the whole future of British Overseas Trade and consequently of the way of life in these Islands. This is no exaggeration as we shall show in the opening paragraphs.' What follows is a brief 'history of British Air Transport since Air Transport became an accomplished fact' the author's contention being that Britain 'finished the last war with a Fighting Air Fleet vastly superior to any other in the world' and that this was 'immediately cut to a mere skeleton and it never seems to have occurred to the Government of the day to regard the air as of the smallest important from a Civil point of view.' After this section on 'Early Struggles' there sections headed 'An Imperial Basis' 'Vital Issues' 'Wanted - A Man' 'The Freedom of the Air' 'Looking Ahead' 'The Sea and the Air' and 'Now'. The author's contention is that 'The Empire which depends for its very existence on military co-operation at the present moment will in the future depend equally on commercial co-operation.' Big Spring Virginia 1879. Handbill measuring 8 ¾ x 11 ¾ inches. Marginal damage especially to top; marked in pencil at top left; very good. A handbill describing a process for curing tobacco patented in 1879 by John W. Barnett of Big Spring a town in northern Virginia. Tobacco has long been a hugely important cash crop in the region; in 1860 Virginia was the top tobacco producer in the United States by a large margin. During the Civil War production in Virginia dropped precipitously and bounced back slowly but surely over the next decades.1 Barnett goes into great detail specifying exact times and temperatures for the process; for instance for the first twelve hours the fires should be renewed every two hours and twenty-four minutes. The process involves using water around the fires which slows the curing process.
