Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 6 1/2" issued in beige with brown lettering to spine and front cover. 1st editions.<br /><br />This study presents a detailed account of surviving Pima Bajo material culture along the middle course of the Rio Yaqui in central Sonora Mexico. In conjunction with his two studies of The Tarahumar of Mexico and The Tepehuan of Chihuahua this volume adds to the record from northern Mexico aboriginal and contemporary Indian groups. Archival materials indicate that at Contact of Pima Bajo extended in a continuous band from the middle portion of the Rio Sonora to the middle reaches of the Rio Yaqui and eastward into the Sierra Madre Occidental. The present-day Pima Bajo are geographically divided into two groups and in this work Pennington focuses on the culturally more advanced western Pima since few studies have been done on this segment of the Pima population. He extensively analyzes archival materials pertaining to the Pima Bajo of the historical period and discusses the contact between Spaniard Indian and Mestizo. Military and ecclesiastical records document this contact over the last 300 years. Pennington also makes reference to materials found in a previously unpublished Pima Bajo vocabulary that was probably composed during the seventeenth century.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Page ends soiled previous owner's name on front end paper of volume one. 8°, br. edit. fig., pp. 256 con 50 illustrazioni fotografiche n.t. Seconda edizione ampliata. Filippo Perlo (Caramagna 1873 – Roma 1948) nel 1902 fu tra i primi quattro missionari cattolici in Kenya. Nel 1909 fu nominato Vicario Apostolico del Kenya. Erudito geografo, in varie relazioni missionarie ed in quest’opera fornisce ampie e dettagliate osservazioni demo-etno-antropologiche e denuncia lo sfruttamento dei minori e gli orrori di pratiche tribali.
